    This is a dark movie. The director, Todd Phillips, made Joker, not exactly a light-hearted romp. What the film is really about is the main four characters, and their repressed homosexuality and bigotry. The signs are all there. The stoner guy spends his entire existence doped and drugged, to repress his self-hatred, the hatred of his own inability to express his real self, to act and behave as the gay man he is. He even warns the girls at the party when he's smoking weed with them, to be aware of loss of inhibition and so on. Does he look like he's enjoying himself when talking with women ? No. He's miserable that he's not in the same situation with two buff guys. Stiffler ? His flamboyant style of dress. His comments. "It's boner time" ? They are all getting together to watch one of their friends supposedly engage in a sexual act with a woman - yet we never see thst act consummated. Stiffler can only get off, when a nurse, who he can't look at, sticks her fingers up his backside. When he's in the woods, he also says, gleefully, "I'd give it 15 minutes" before we're forcefully assaulted, with locals penetrating us. Although he uses cruder terms. But does he look afraid? No..he looks calm. He's HOPING for that fantasy to come true. Protagonist Josh drives across the United States to prevent his sexless girlfriend from seeing a tape in which he supposedly gets it on with Beth. But what's really on that tape? Why is Josh so paranoid and so keen to intercept it ? Because he used Beth. He got her drunk, ready to get it on, but then asked her to invite her friend (the stalking male TA) to come into the bedroom. Where they made sweet love. He cannot let his secret out. If he was straight, he'd just call his Austin-based girlfriend and dump her for Beth. But no, he never does that. He drives after the tape. He knows that if his girlfriend sees it, she'll reveal his secret. Kyle, and possibly Barry, are straight. Kyle makes sweet love to a big beautiful black woman in the black fraternity, while the others sit in silent terror. Then the next day, when they're on the bus, Kyle shows them the underwear the beautiful black woman gave him. How do the others react? Do they say "nice work" or congratulate him? Do they ask him anything? Are they interested? No, they're actually horrified. They are horrified at the very sight of a woman's underwear, and especially a black woman's underwear. Revealing them not only to be gay but also to be bigots. They spend hundreds of hours in the car, and the scenes we see they are talking excessively about sex with women. As if they must prove to themselves and each other, "yeah, we are straight, we never have gay orgiastic fantasies at all and if we keep making reference to females perhaps we'll never be found out. Our dark secrets will never be revealed." They mock and belittle Kyle, who is the only one who actually scores with a woman (remember, Josh used Beth to get access to the male TA). So they hate him. They giggle like fairies in Chelsea, desiring secretly to pull the bus over, kick Kyle out, tear each other's clothes off and pump each other until they've turned themselves, and the bus, into a pile of blood, faecal matter and male excretion. Until they're limp as slugs, sweating, panting and exultant - finally they've expressed their physical love for each other. That's what this movie is truly about. I've pointed out all the signs. Flamboyant Stiffler is, when his prostate is milked, overjoyed. He even says "that was amazing". He doesn't look at the nurse as she puts her fingers into his back orifice. He doesn't want to. He's imagining it's a man getting him off that way. Indeed the movie is dark, a tragedy disguised as a comedy, and it paved the way for other repressed gay man films like Brokeback Mountain. Now you may not agree with my comments, but don't worry, that just means you're as repressed as the men in this movie. It's 2023. There's nothing wrong with being gay. However the way they treat Kyle is unacceptable, just because he is living a straight lifestyle and is comfortable with his own sexuality. Their bigotry is also unacceptable. But that's part of what makes this film so dark.

      In summary: It's a movie about gay men struggling to express, and conceal, their homosexual tendencies and desires. The characters are doped up, drunk, or flamboyantly dressed, they get off by watching "boner" movies together (Stifflers character is so excited, because he's ready for a circle jerk with the boys), but their homosexual eroticism is tinged with anti-black bigotry. This film was made by the guy who made Joker. He can't make light hearted films. Once you look past the veneer, you'll see the disturbing truth.

    • @jimreily7538
      @jimreily7538 Před 8 měsíci

      One last interesting fact: The original script had them engaging in an orgiastic expression of physical fulfilment on the bus, but thereafter they engage in a suicide pact because the straight guy, who they hate, Kyle, filmed it all to get revenge for the way they treated him. He threatens to reveal it. It was supposed to lead to a movie called Road Trip 2: Yearning for Help. But the studio canned that film. Too dark. Director Todd Phillips - a close friend of John Travolta - nearly threatened to avoid marketing this movie and refused for a time to do press interviews. Eventually the studio executives threatened HIM to play ball so to speak, and he did, and was thereby rewarded with future filmmaking opportunities including Joker.
