after Mike Compton’s excellent settings of this tune. for a twist I’m playing in a “drop A” mandola tuning of (A)AEA
Irish Polkas / Weins F5

A couple favorite Irish Polkas. I try to alternate downstroke with hammer-on or pull-off to imitate the swing the fiddlers get by alternating the bow direction every two notes
Tam Lin / Wiens H5 Mandola

I've only had this a little while, but this tune keeps coming back to the fingers on the mandola- it goes really dark!

Here's a traditional Irish Jig played on a Gibson three point F2 #9211 (made approx 1909). This little F2 has really surprised me with its gorgeous tone & volume, it's probably the best oval-holed Gibson I've played!

best mandolin player on planet earth 🌏 😅
He is from another planet. If you look at nickel creek a young version you could tell that he is the best. Never saw anybody who at 12 could smoke pros. He is the GOAT
Show off………the dudes a monster!
Wow. My mandolin is jealous.
Mediocre.
Chris always out here making it look easy.
Bach baby! That’s Dy-no-mite!
flawless
Good sound! What is the brand of your guitar please ? Regards,
"Chanticleer" made by Patrick Arbuthnot of Norwich, UK
Bravo, congratulations !.
Mighty axe and weirdly awesome mix of tunes
Wow!
Just one of you playing Dan? Sounds like a mandorchestra! And what’s with the ecclesiastical setting. You taken up holy orders since last we met? :-) Aidan
Oh it's a stunt tuning to be sure.. our local parish church, nice acoustics :)
This tune was composed by Canadian piper, Colin Magee and is in the style of a traditional Scottish pipe jig.
i love you
What piece is he playing here?
👌👌👌👌
Great tune! 🤘🐷🤘
Thile is a phenomenon.
How can he remember all those notes, let alone play them so fluidly and with so much feeling -- and apparently effortlessly? Clearly, he is not of this Earth.
There are only 7 plus some blue notes
@@oldtimetinfoilhatwearer Correct -- there are only a few notes in any non-microtonal musical scale. My expression of wonder and admiration is about the musician's ability to commit to memory and faultlessly and fluidly reproduce such long and complex SEQUENCES of notes --- something which I, as a musician, find challenging.
@@robst247 practice😁 talent isn't real, only dedication
Any clues as to his planet of origin and immigration status?
@@oldtimetinfoilhatwearer Some people can practice until they're blue in the face (and the fingertips) and nevertheless fail to produce a rendition as fluid, faultless and deeply felt as Chris's. To me, he is sublimely talented.
One of Kalamazoo's finest!
What did that machine cost??? 100 Grand???
$200K
Oh yeah that’s definitely the check I do before purchasing a mandolin
Sold me - yet while we are sure not going to hear the price, guessing that is worth 100,000 easy. Mandolin Brother's shop (sadly gone) had the Gibson Lloyd Loar era Mandola i wanted, yet it was 106,000 USD.
Me too, what a coincidence ;)
😄😄😄 of course!
Yea. I did this when I bought my Rouge at the pawn shop.
🤣🤣
When this guy dies, they will pull out his brain and study it. WTF
wow
There are many great mandolinists in history, that I enjoy, including Dave Appollon (sp ?), classical players, Burns, Grisman, and more. However, the one that stands taller than all of them, is Chris Thile. Musicianwise, I would put him on Mandolin, in the same department as Mark O'Conner, on fiddle, guitar, and even, mandolin. They rise above their instruments, not restricted from presenting their musical ideas, by the physical parameters of the instrument. They are not just locked in, rather, they can be found soaring above the instrument, into the area of pure music. In bluegrass, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck, and others are on that level. The same goes for greats in other areas, such as jazz, classical, and so on. Chris could make any instrument sound great.
Way to rock the Bach!
So, probably no chance I can get the tablature to this - is there?
So goooood!
That guitar is tiny!!! 😄
*eyeroll* :)
and that's how you play a $200,000+ mandolin!
Some good old Bach…terrific playing.
I never thought I would see someone better than Sierra hull
She's good, but no one comes close to Thile in technical ability.
Tabs please.
Just got my Loar the other day. Simply an amazin instrument
What date?
Some Master teachers would scold you for letting your arm sleeve rest on the top of an acoustic instrument. "It's like a blanket over your mouth!" I can hear my old Russian teacher now.
None of those teachers sounded as good as Chris so they'll be aight
Good is't he ?
I wondered what Chris was going to spend that MacArthur Genius award money on. I think he made a good investment.
I've seen him live 3 times. He is one of the greatest musicians I've had the privilege to listen to - live or not.
my gawd this inside picking!
Where is the melody
Legend in his own time. So dang good.
Piano players can't hit that many notes
He is intertaining Angles that's why hes looking up I believe! Amen. Devine when we get to heaven well hear notes we've never heard on Earth. Amen
Way beyond what is promised after 10,000 hours of practice. Sure glad Chris does more popularized stage performances than this...( lovely as it is). I probably would never see him if he played only concert halls.
Very nice, please keep uploading! Can I request a video in which you talk about ornaments, pick direction (not sure if that's the right term) and practice methods? That'd be really great! By the way, I am still listening to your CDs, superb stuff.
Thank you sir, I'm honored to hear that. I have a video on pick technique for jigs that I did some years ago that should still be around under my videos.. Ornaments can be fairly hard to describe without an in-person demo.. I tried to teach a bunch of them at some festivals years ago- generally you want them to be rhythmic instead of melodic, and to incorporate smoothly into the melody. If you are after some specifics let me know and I'll do my best to demonstrate
Yes, I've seen that video, but it's only 20 seconds and it's a bit difficult to see how you move your pick because it's so fast. I think I am able to do that particular jig ornament, but I find reels like this one to be a bit harder. What you do in this video for instance, is really not obvious to me at all, the little ornamental notes disappears in full speed. Maybe you could do a video in which you explain the different ornaments you use, and demonstrate slowly? I'm sure it'll be a hit, and I could share it in various facebook groups if you like.
@@torbjornkarlsen czcams.com/video/6YCOxGlPLy8/video.html have a look at this one..
Love the dynamics he can do on this piece. Not easy.
Hi Dan.Met you in London years ago - I'm a friend of Michael Lempelius, Sam Proctor and that crowd. Great playing as usual, loved the CD. Just to let you know, that tune is Scottish and was composed by a pipe major. Keep 'er lit!
so many notes!!
Oh, so it was that, huh?
Nice. Good drone you've got going there, too.
