    also you say at 7:10 to play E minor on a C harmonica. I cannot find that combination on any position charts that I have downloaded. Of course I only go to second or third position since I have yet to understand positions. Trying for years with very little uderstanding. Thanks for the lesson

    you keep saying 5 notes but the minor pentaonic has 6, what am I missing? Thanks 2D, 3", 4B, 4D, 5D, 6B

    • @richardroysleigh
      @richardroysleigh Před 2 dny

      A Pentatonic scale is a scale with 5 notes (from the Greek word 'pente' meaning 5). The minor pentatonic scale you are referring to has five notes, 2D, 3' (not 3''), 4B, 4D, and 5D The 6B is the same note as the beginning note but an octave higher. On a C harp 2D is a G and so is 6B. You only count the alphabet names of the notes one time for each letter.

      @@richardroysleigh Thanks Richard. I still confuse holes with notes. The music language... is still very confusing to me...positions, flats, shraps etc. By the way I watched an earlier video of yours that suggested wood shedding on the blues scale and I could not agree more. For an ear player like me, the most fun an improvement method is simply to just play. Thanks for the time you put in to teach others.

    Richard, I came back to this video the other day frustrated with a lack of progress playing guitar with harp. I’m quite proficient with guitar, and have become proficient with harp in 2nd/3rd, but could not out the 2 together. I’ve only messed around with this position for 3 days and I’m absolutely dumbfounded. I can’t believe how good it sounds. This is an absolute game changer for me, and has lit a new fire. Thank you so much for contributing this.

    Thanks Richard! About 20-25 years ago, I remember attending Joe Filisko's class at Augusta Heritage Blues Week. I expressed my own conclusion that that bending is caused by modifying the vocal tract to reinforce the intended pitch, analogous to changing pitch when humming or whistling. This is the first time I'm seeing this explained accurately. It's frustrating to see all he instructions of physical methods to bend notes, but not explaining the physics of why this works. I have just discovered your videos, and they are excellent! Thanks again!

    Thanks Richard I appreciated your thoughts on simply wood shedding the blues. I have been trying to follow too many things and getting totally frustrated. I also finally realize that the flat 5th is the 4 draw bend. I never knew what is was and all the instructors throw around the term like we all understand. I also liked your comment on the overblows/bends. I have stopped trying to do them as I too am older and can't afford the time to learn.

I have played in three Bluegrass Bands, dating to 1976 and played in many festivals and with some great fiddlers, the most notable being Chubby Anthony (he's in the Bluegrass Hall of Fame). Always love the "voice" of how the harmonica and fiddle have a conversation. Nice going Richard.......good solid rhythm too on the "offbeat chop". Nice to see you found a solid fiddle player to partner with.

    Thanks for the lesson, Richard. Great insight into the learning process. It always inspires me to see what pros go through to get it in their brain, because I don't consider myself to have any innate musical talent but I find myself going through the same process you guys/gals do. Do you custom build those MB30's or can they be purchased online?

    • @richardroysleigh
      @richardroysleigh Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks for you comments on the video! The MB 30 is not on the market. Brendan Power and Zombor Kovaks came up with this design and I worked with them to make a series of about 50 of these harmonicas. They sold out immediately, and then we discovered how difficult it was to build them. By the time we fulfilled all the orders we did not want to keep making them. They were about 10 times harder to build than we thought they would be.

    Thanks so much. Such good playing & so expressive! If you have a link where I could get into the just tuning relationship to the equal temperament. I am wondering how to compromise between the two by having the beats (or detuning) between two similiar notes done up or down to be closer to equal temperament. Ex: if the 3rd note of a scale is too high in equal, then reduce the beats downwards towards the just intonation direction. Please keep posting such beautiful videos.
