Thank for the reminder that you don’t have to have everything perfect before you start. Can you please share what math curriculum you use? We are finishing up our second grade math curriculum and we would like to try something different for third grade. We found a few mistakes in the math curriculum and the way it explained certain concepts was confusing for my daughter. Thank you

  • @fiatvoluntastua1546

I have found having 2 boys of my own and 2 girls to be a different outcome in some respects. My son's are the oldest and the middle. And yes they are full of energy. But they love coloring and art projects too. My youngest son loves to be outside, he's 4, and if he could dig all day he would. I'm wondering though, what to do when my 8yr old son is so distracted that he won't do anything at all, he just freezes all day. Any tips? (One thing I think that helped was his comfort level in the work that he's doing.) For example in the summer he has been practicing reading and speed drills in math and finally starting to love the challenge. Going from 2 hours to 40 mins to almost 15min. The very first time he had ever done them though he only took 15 min he regressed immensely. I'm not sure why? I'm sure from something I did, but I just don't know what? Pushed too much? I asked my son how I thought he was doing in reading and maybe because I push him so much he thought not so well I was shocked and told him he's doing excellent. How do you not push? My youngest son loves the push he's riding his bike before his oldest sister. Thank you for your video it was very helpful. I'm very inspired by your big beautiful family.❤😊🙏🕊️

Thank you! Not knowing you son, it's hard to be able to give specific advice. I could keep lessons short as much as possible. It's ok to push for short periods of time. All kids are different, so it may take a little longer for you to figure out what works for him. I hope you can find some good solutions!

I am very overwhelmed by the thought of teaching my six year old to read and I am about to have a C-section for baby #6 and need something super simple and non overwhelming for me. I had originally thought I was going to use a program called All About Reading but while it looks very good it’s just more than I can take on and handle right now. I’d love to know more about how you teach reading! How do you teach reading other books beyond the Bob books? Do you do sight word teaching? Can the other sets beyond the 5 original Bob books be beneficial for learning to read also?

    • @OurLifeHomeschooling
      @OurLifeHomeschooling Před 6 dny

Congratulations on your little one! What a precious gift! I hope everything goes well for your delivery. I think it's very normal to be a little overwhelmed when you are adding another member to the family plus trying to keep up with house and school work. I can remember being overwhelmed at different times in homeschooling. Personally, I would not stress too much about my 6 year old being at a certain reading level or being able to read fluently. I would aim to this every day- 1. read to him/her and 2. do a short 10-15 minute reading lesson using whatever curriculum you choose for reading. I did a couple of blog posts that lay out specifically how I teach reading. I'll link them below. Teach a Child to Read With Two Important Habits ourlifehomeschooling.com/2020/09/02/teach-a-child-to-read-with-two-important-habits/ Simple Steps for Teaching Reading That Work ourlifehomeschooling.com/2020/09/10/teaching-a-child-to-read-part-2-reading-practice/ When is it best to start teaching my child to read? ourlifehomeschooling.com/2023/09/06/when-should-i-start-teaching-my-child-to-read/ Using the Bob Books Companion Guide I created, I teach from a phonics-based perspective with a few sight words (that don't follow the rules) on the side. I'm sure the other Bob Books are helpful, but I haven't used them. After Bob Books, I use Frog and Toad stories, Little Bear stories, Amelia Bedelia, or other simple books. Also, they can try picture books. Dr. Seuss has very simple words in the text...anything to build their confidence so they can be proud that they are finally reading real books. I hope that helps!

Thank you for the compliment! I've not always been the best at consistently doing a workout routine, but I do try to walk regularly. What has helped me more has been watching what I eat. For the most part, I cut out sugar and white flour (except for sourdough bread). We try to eat unpackaged food...mostly meat, veggies, fruit, and 85% dark chocolate. ;) I eat some dairy, but limited amounts. Lots of raw veggies and fruit instead of crackers, snack bars, and potato chips.

So we ended up moving to PA, here on our homestead. I homeschool our children and I have been worrying about my children being able to have opportunities to make new friends, and with being new to the area, not being able to put them in extracurricular activities and sports. It just isn't plausible right now. You made me feel much better and content on the issue. So thank you ☺️ Moving, being new to the area, NOT knowing the area, and homeschooling can be tuff.. especially on children, and especially with making new friends and settling into our new normal. It's so important NOT to overdue ourselves and NOT to overload our schedules and time, and to avoid over-stimulating ourselves and burnout. I agree about the sports / scheduled events (even things like Boy Scouts). It takes up so much time! We started with these things with my first born and then I would feel horribly guilty because he would miss spending time at the playground... Why am I spending money for scouts if he just wants to go to the playground? We quit it all! It has been so much more peaceful and enjoyable.

Completely agree! Letting it go can be a little scary, but the peace it brings to home life is great!

Do you have any tips on how you teach science to multiple ages? My oldest is an advanced 9 year old that does great with apologia...but it's a little too advanced for my 6 and 4 year old. I'd love to teach science all together as a family. We also have a homestead so they learn a lot about animals and gardening naturally.

My son is very enthralled by his science and we use the unit studies from Good and the Beautiful. They have a free Marine Biology unit you could try/look at. It has a separation for more complicated work for the older kids that my 9yo can often do. My 4 yo has a wonderful time doing it alongside his brother.

Personally, I would just do Apologia (or whatever science he/she likes) with your nine year old and not worry about the younger kids yet. In my opinion, kids at that age don't need a formal science curriculum. Plus, they will probably pick up on a lot of what they hear from your science lesson just from being nearby. Also, they learn a lot naturally from the things you mentioned.

I know you didn’t ask me but just wanted to say that nature study is enough for a loooong time. My son is 11 and we still just do nature study, living books and lots of life skills (gardening, cooking, canning, baking, woodworking and the list goes on..) you can learn all sciences through nature study and the skill of observation. Save the big time science for high school or late middle school. From my experience this has served us well and given us room to delight in other areas formally.

Check out CM simple studies. Crystal has done an amazing job at her guides and has made nature study and journaling so fun. Also joy Cherrick and her nature hacking guides are wonderful. For older grades check our sabbath mood homeshcool!

@@intentionallymade 100% agree! Excellent input! Durenda Wilson talks about this in her podcast. She didn’t do any formal science curriculum until high school and her kids passed the science state exams just from natural learning and nature study in the early years.

(Momma to 11, married 22 years) We love going shopping as a family. It creates really good opportunities for the kiddos to spend time with us away from the house other than church and the library. It’s no easy task, but so worth it and everyone always has a good time together.

Love it! It's nice hearing all the different ways families make things work. Lots of memories being made, I'm sure!

I still haven't figured out how to do morning time and our basics(math and language arts) all in the same day. It seems to be either or. I have one independent student and 2 that are depending completely on me

I wouldn't put too much pressure on yourself if you can't make it work for both on a given day. Try aiming for a Morning Time one or two days a week rather than every day. Personally, I would make sure kids are doing reading, writing, and math every day first, then add on the extras.

I love that the things you prioritize are very similar to what I feel is important when it comes to homeschooling. I was also a teacher before I started homeschooling and my priorities have changed so much since the beginning of our homeschool journey. One thing I feel, I definitely need to get better at is really taking the time to listen to my kids and spend time with them that's not homeschooling time. My oldest is any to start middle school, and it was a wake up call to me about how fast time has gone.

Glad to hear this! I relate about spending time that's not homeschooling time. Something I need to remember from time to time as well!
