The commands given in the Qur'an as well as sunnah are to treat the slaves with respect and honour them. If you look at things from a historical standpoint this was a regular theme in an era of empires openly fighting and conquering for no other reason but to simply gain power. If you literally look at the rights of the slave and concubine over their master in Islam you will find therein that they are identical to the rights of the wife! If one is kept as a slave, they must eat from that which you eat, clothe from that which you clothe and sleep from that which you sleep. Have you ever heard any reports from the companions among the slaves of any bad and violent treatment? Now let me ask you have you heard any reports of the opposite? And you will find numerous reports of the level of care and honour the believers gave to their slaves. There are reports where a sahabi (i don't want to say but it might have been Umar ibn khattab) was meeting a ruler or general and he came with some of his slaves, but the ruler did not know among them which was Umar because they all looked the same and there was no distinction between the way they were dressed and looking in regards their health. This also goes to show that the slaves were treated as equals. Not to mention brother leaving the women at war time would have resulted in such an epidemic economically for that era considering the prospects women held in society to survive alone. I think this brother makes fair points. Though, I have never thought it wise to put hadith, or sunnah as high as the Quran. The wise King Solomon made many mistakes. That does not make Judiasm invalid. Judas Iscariot was hand-picked as a disciple by Christ himself, yet his shortcomings do not invalidate Christianity. It says in the Quran that Muhammad's only job was to deliver the message. We are not meant to copy his life, nor his mistakes. This may be the interpretation that he or his followers settled on, perhaps even for their own convenience, but it's not what I had originally took it to mean when I read the Quran, and it is still not what I believe it means now. God does not like those who are unjust. We must be wise not to confuse the message with those who are sent to deliver it.
