I don’t understand how inmates are expected to pay for healthcare when they are physically detained from participating in the job market while incarcerated. I understand it doesn’t make some people happy to know they are paying for “criminals” well-being, but that is the responsibility the society takes on when holding people captive. Its so twisted that inmates have to rely entirely on outside connections and support to survive in jail. Assuming people have these support networks and assuming generosity and ability to support from said external sources is such a cop out for the prison system. Talk about assuming the power but outsourcing the responsibility. Disgusting. And before anyone mentions the jobs available in jails - remember the criminally low wages they are compensated and the inflated prices of commissary. The math ain’t mathin. I believe inmates shouldn’t be coddled, or given privileges of a luxurious lifestyle, but y’all… dental health, nutrition, and hygiene are NOT luxuries. They are basic necessities for well-being when incarcerated for extended periods of time. These people are not animals. We need more empathy if we ever hope to see true rehabilitation and healing.

Males jails are nicer than females apparently. I haven't been in custody ever so I don't know personally. But when my husband got in trouble for allegedly knowing someone committed a felony, he got a shower right away and there's nobody on their period and he gets free coffee. Not ideal of course, but sounds better than this shit of women not getting showers and bleeding all over themselves.

When I was in, they made me wait hours for my insulin. I'm a type 1 diabetic and I was left to go through DKA for hours while I waited on med.
