The Biology of Gray Whales: California State Symbols Episode 1
Why are gray whale numbers declining, and what can we do to reverse this trend? In this new series, I delve into the fascinating biology and rich history of California's iconic symbols-starting with our state marine mammal, the gray whale. These resilient creatures have faced countless challenges, from the brink of extinction during the whaling era to their remarkable recovery, with populations growing from just 1,000 whales in the 1940s to over 26,000. However, recent years have seen a troubling decline, known as an "unusual mortality event." Today, I sit down with one of the world’s foremost experts on gray whales, Alisa Schulman-Janiger, to uncover their biology, history, and the crucial steps we can take to help protect them for future generations.

Join my patreon here 🌲🍄: www.patreon.com/backpackbiology This was our first time backpacking in the Yosemite backcountry. 3 days jam packed with hiking, fishing, mosquitos, elevation gain, rain, thunder storms.. you name it, we had it. The first day, we climbed to Budd lake, then to Upper Cathedral. The next day was to Echo lake followed by Matthes lake. I sadly ran out of memory in my camera s...

Is Bonsai Torture? - Biology of Pain

Is it possible to torture a bonsai tree? I posted a "Biology of Bonsai" video a year ago, and to my surprise, there was a ton of backlash regarding bonsai ethics. Many people are convinced that the act of bonsai is hurting the tree, and even further, people who enjoy bonsai are sadistic. In today's episode, I explore the evolution of pain and discuss why it isn't possible to torture a plant. So...

Wood Carving A Spoon With Coals! I learned this wood carving technique in a wilderness survival course and found it so relaxing and therapeutic, so I naturally thought to make it an ASMR video. If you'd like to try, you can follow step by step, but be careful! I did end up cutting myself, as you can tell in the video (a bandaged finger and blood on the spoon :P) Here are some tips if you want t...
