    So do you take some water and let it set for a while, or just dump it right into the tanks? I usually just dump any water into my community tank and i dont really see many bugs or anything theres one that lookes like a cone but i think its just a dragonfly i cant see any scuds or daphnia or anything really small growing, do i have to have a tank specifically for growing out scuds and stuff?

    • @jeffkane4391
      @jeffkane4391 Pƙed 6 dny

      @shakinbottles if I don't have an empty tank, I like to use pickle jars or something similar. I prefer to see what I'm adding to a tank so I don't add leachs or other undesirables on purpose. That being said, the Oscar's love them a good dragon fly nymph 😉😁 there are some viruses out there that do effect fish differently, pending species, so I personally quarantine the wild-type bug collections within reason. If my bug jar or tank is doing great for 2 or 3 months, that's about all a person can realistically do shy of not adding wild creatures to the aquarium. The best place for me has been a ditch on the bog side attached to a small lake via a culvert. It yields the largest verity of micro critters for me. Daphnia to seed shrimp, planaria, hydra, and sponges as well. The sponges have never survived long-term. Something always makes them disappear at some point. I have found aquatic isopods under rocks near shore on some of our flowages, the one I find the most at is near a paper mill that does use the water in their system and dumps it back into the system. I don't know if there is a correlation but an observation either way. Scuds I find in almost every body of water that I look for them in. If you're targeting Daphnia, specifically try a waterproof light at night near cover and have patients (put it in the water and wait). Do look into local laws. Each state is different, and some counties exceed the states laws. I hope there's a little useful information in this mini book 😆 @shakinbottles

      @@jeffkane4391 hey thanks man I really do appreciate it. I think your up by the great lakes because of your shorts, is that correct? I've only ever seen one sponge from my local water and that was from one of the biggest lakes near me and like probably 10 years ago, idk if that has anything to do with the other biodiversity around me or not but I just found it interesting that you can find sponges. I'm in Kansas and our waters are very muddy most of the time, is that going to effect how these microorganism and microfauna live in my waters? Also I don't really have a ditch nearby, all of my water sources are running streams or lakes with mostly sandstone and clay, (or manmade with idk what kind of rocks and boulders), so how would I go about finding scuds/daphnia, etc, in there kinds of waters?

    • @shakinbottles
      @shakinbottles Pƙed 6 dny

      @@jeffkane4391 also what kind of quarantine do you do with outside water? And I was thinking about feeding the dragonfly nymph to my sunfish. But he's just so cute and I havnt seen him mess with any of my fish yet, so I'll give him a chance I already had one morph or whatever inside anyways lol.

    • @jeffkane4391
      @jeffkane4391 Pƙed 6 dny

      @shakinbottles lakes for the daphnia or slow pools on a creek or river in the weeds and roots. If the water is 3 feet of visibility, stick to water less than 3 feet deep. Scuds will be in the weeds as well if they don't have any rock or wood cover. If the water is too dark to support plant life, find water that supports it.

    • @jeffkane4391

      @shakinbottels a little water from a bog near me. It's attached to a lake via a culvert. The water was low this year, so I only had one good harvest to start up the ponds and barrels. I do have some pure stains inside, but the little brown copipods are great little workers and help me jump start a fresh setup. I typically get fairy shrimp, daphnia, scuds, and planaria from the same spot. The good with the "bad" pending point of view and how it's being used.

      The property definitely helped it be possible. The beginning of the stream is about 15 - 20 feet higher than the pond it ends in. I believe the stream is around 150 to 170 feet long based on the home dimensions. Based on the age of the furnace, the pond and stream should be close to 20 years old.
