To teach our kids the concept of democracy, public schools have to transform from institutions dictating students what to learn to environments where students collectively are taught how to learn. Finland, Montessori, Waldorf, Robinson are visionaries of how to honor and empower our learning youth. They need to be included as an equal contributor in the societal evolution to a democratic world . Intergenerational interaction means elders and youth learn from each other to empower humanity. Public schools can provide that intergenerational connection if the top down process can be minimized (get the ego out of intellect). We are all lifelong learners if we remain humble!
