You know, having grown up with the theatrical/VHS version, I never realized how many of its jokes worked due to sharp editing or better timing. For example, in the VHS version you don't even see the guy spit on the burger because it immediately cuts away to Jim Carrey looking in disgust, followed by a loud, audible spitting sound and people going "eww" in the background. By leaving it to your imagination, it makes it come off comically gross rather than just plain gross as shown here. Or the scene where the trucker catches Jim Carrey in the bathroom: in the VHS version all we see is him bust the door open, followed by Jim screaming and in the next scene we see the guy squash him into a corner. In the unrated version he straight-up states he's gonna rape and kill him and we get a very unflattering shot of his thongs -- and some of his pubic hair. So many of the gags in the unrated version end up feeling awkward and gross by going on too long, whereas some scenes are just plain mean-spirited and should've remained cut from the movie proper. For a comedy, proper timing is key.
