Blue Seattle with Cameron Crowe | Revisionist History: Development Hell | Malcolm Gladwell
In 1986, Cameron Crowe, the film director, and Nancy Wilson, of the rock group Heart, got married. They honeymooned in a little cabin in the Pacific Northwest, and while they were there decided to write a musical, about Elvis as a cab driver in Seattle. They wrote and recorded demos of all the songs, and called it “Blue Seattle.” It became a lost masterpiece that never saw the light of day. In our Development Hell season finale, Cameron joins Malcolm to share the songs and tell the story behind “Blue Seattle” for the very first time.

Before M. Night Shyamalan became a household name for his mind bending thrillers like “The Sixth Sense” and “Signs”, he was just a young screenwriter in love. Between her big hits, “Monster” and “Wonder Woman”, Patty Jenkins wrote an R-rated fairy tale, starring a dog. She hoped that the dog would deliver such a great performance that the Academy would - for the first time - give the Best Actor award to an animal. The story was about a dog program in a prison, a perfect set-up for a story of both canine and human redemption, right? Wrong. That’s the ...

    Love Revisionist History, but they destroyed Ariel's story here. She didn't become weak when she transformed herself into a human. She is the bravest princess, she left her world and everything she knew, she is an explorer, she is learning the ways of a new culture and risked everything to follow her heart. Ursula is a despicable witch who exploits people's weaknesses to steal their souls and make them slaves so she can keep doing her magic and gain power to her own benefit. Everyone is warned about her, and they look for her because they want an easy fix for their trouble. Even if she (Ursula) could one day become good, she wouldn't change from one second to the other. Then you forgive her for everything she has done without any consequence and or repair, giving a pass to anyone who wants to do bad, and then justify their behavior by becoming a victim of society. Little Mermaid is not perfect, but inspires us to explore, to lean on new ideas, and world views, and to get out of our safety nests. It challenges pre-concepts and teaches us to fight for what we think is right and keep questioning the law. Laws are also imperfect and not always fair. I also loved that in her most vulnerable moment, Ariel had her friends to count on and despite her lack of skills or her voice, she figured out a way to make it into the ship and save her beloved prince from Ursula. Lastly, Ariel's father reconsidered all his judgment and hate towards humans to see his daughter happy and their love united two completely different group of people.

    The fact that you stated Douglas Murray would be yelling racial epithets at your mother in the very same (supposedly) contrite podcast where you pretend to be “listening” and “learning” is frankly disgusting. In many ways, your cute little “going to debate school” gimmick is worse than your Munk debacle because it attempts soften your deep-seated pride and vitriol with kids’ voices. Cheap and obvious. I was a huge fan and consumer of your books - they no longer read the same way. You have much bigger issues to deal with than getting publicly spanked by some clever Brit. You’re deeply unaware of who you really are. Start by “listening” to yourself.

  • @sadkingbilly3308
    @sadkingbilly3308 Před 14 dny

    Boils down to pride. Even in this analysis you still believe the argument was between mainstream and alternative. Neither Douglas nor Matt were arguing for alternative media to completely replace mainstream, but rather that mainstream needs to soul check itself back from the bias trash that it’s become. You started from a false premise and let that lead your assumptions of the men to build straw men of their beliefs (kinda exactly like the mainstream media does to narratives it disagrees with). Then, you didn’t listen in good faith to what they said because your own assumptions and pride wouldn’t allow you to give any credibility to them. All debate has to start in good faith - the side that comes to belittle and disrespect always loses in the end.

    1. You didn’t call Douglas by Doug just once you repeatedly did this after he’d corrected you the first time. You also mispronounced Matt Taibbi’s name too which the audience saw for what it was, a snide little power-play. 2. Murray writes extensively about the social consequences of mass immigration from war torn countries within Europe, so cherry picking a quote and framing it as racist (and that he’d shout the N word to your Mum when she was young) is very on-brand for you. 3. Why do you feel the need to cite Murray’s skin colour? 4. Never in this post-analysis did you acknowledge your childish gestures, just one example when gesturing to shoot your own head when the Biden Laptop story was brought up.

    I am so glad this movie didn't get made with Murphy's horrible attempt at telling the story the way he wanted it told-because for him the audiences would be too stupid to make their own conclusions about what the real story means. Murphy neeeded to Hollywoodize it, otherwise it would just be way too boring, and way too void of its speech giving moments. What a load of crap. He could have just wrote the story the way it was, and let people see that individuals are complicated, and we could each decide for ourselves how these characters came to be how they were. No wonder the actual protagonist of the story also hated it. By trying not to make it a statement about race, Murphy decided the best approach would be to make it ultra-centered on race. Not all whites kids are innocent, and not all black kids are criminals, and I don't think I need Murphy to be the one to wedge his take into a story that has it's own lessons to tell. Its no wonder why most movies made these days are crap. Take a fascinating story and give it to a screenwriter to turn it into broccoli and Cap'n Crunch Soup with lighter fluid.

      And there was nothing racist for sexist in it. What he was really arguing was that there was a time when journalists had to do their best to present the truth and do it in a way the entire audience could understand. Whereas now every single organization journalist and outlet has a specific demographic play cater to
