The Outlaw Offroad
United States
Registrace 15. 12. 2018
In 2011, the founder of Outlaw Offroad, Doug Langford started what became Outlaw in the bays of a High Point, NC automotive shop he was running, at the time. There were no real offroad shops in the area in those days and customers had been asking for this type of work over the years. So, with a few customers and a couple of shared work bays, Outlaw Offroad was born. Back in that time, there was no name or logo for what we were doing, we were just lifting Jeeps and trucks, and having a great time doing it. It wasn't until 2013, that we realized this offroad thing was turning into something and decided to give it a name, and Outlaw Offroad was born.

Good job Ryan!
I'm glad I listened to your video I have a 2021 JL sport I am currently running 33s on it and I want to go to 35 some people tell me I don't have to re-gear and some people tell me I do. What's your professional opinion on that?
35's are the weird spot where you *Can* Get away with not re-gearing depending on what factory ratio, and which engine you have. If you have 3.45's even a 35" tire will start to stay in 7th gear instead of 8th. drive it with 35s and see how it feels. If you think you may go to 37s one day, re-gear!
@@TheOutlawOffroad wow you know your stuff... I'll find out what I have...
Good info
Really good Dirt2Dust episode. Justin’s story is interesting. Yeah, I don’t trust the cheap Amazon/Chinese gear.
We always appreciate a good story time from the recovery mythical vest legend!
Time for me to come back to G’boro for some upgrades.
How do i fit a 15,16inch rim on a jk
You will need a wheel with a deep offset and backspacing. Something around 3.5" BS should work. If you don't have that, you will need wheel spacers to clear the brakes
Would u recommend the Barnes4wd Aluminum tie rod?
It works but you don’t need it. WTF
it *Kind-Of* works, in certain applications, on certain vehicles.. Not on Jeeps though, so no... you dont NEED it :) Wanting some bling under your rig is an entirely different discussion though! You do what you want!
Wow, this guy should be a blue politician.
This guy is the farthest thing from Blue LOL. Some questions are more complex than a simple yes or no, which is why we dedicated an entire episode to talking about it!
Hello I have a 2019 wrangler sahara 3.6L stock diff 3.5 lift and 37's what would you recommend I re-gear to
Hi! At minimum 4.88's
@@TheOutlawOffroad thank you
yeah lets talk about this. i just found out my last trip out i yanked the shaft right out of front shock Teraflex 2.5 lift w/9550 VSS shocks. maybe they sent the wrong shocks?
Yikes!! Yes, its possible your shock was too short
Good times!
Putting together a 84 CJ with AMC 401 T-176 and Dana 300. Dana 60 rear. 37” tires. Not a wheeler, just personal preference. What do you recommend for gear ratio.
my jeep currently has offset balljoints but needs to be replaced because of play. (installed from previous owner, mostly likely bent Cs). Ive noticed that offset balljoints come in various degrees of camber. How can i find out which one to buy or is there any other solution to this?
first you need to figure out why there are offset balljoints, as that is not normal or common. Sometimes these are installed as a "quick fix" to a bent axle. We typically install dynatrac ball joints which last a long time
@@TheOutlawOffroad thank you reaching back. Got any recommendations on how to check why there was offset ball joints? We just came to a conclusion that it was bent Cs. Does doing an alignment check also determine that?
Common sense..thanks
How to know what gear ratio I have on my wrangler..
the easiest way to is to lift the rear tires off the ground and make a mark on the drive shaft and tires. Spin the tires and watch the drive shaft and count rotations. For every 1 full rotation of the tire, you will get multiple rotations on the drive shaft. in between 3.5-4 rotations = 3.73, just barely over 4 rotations = 4.10, 4.5 rotations = 4.56, between 4.5-5 rotations = 4.88, just barely over 5 rotations = 5.13, and almost 5.5 rotations = 5.38. Hope that helps!
F150 GMC SIERRA TAKES BUMPS VERY BAD
Very informational, Thx! I do have a question on your statement that the upper rear control arm (adjustable) is the 2nd most important ones to replace. Can you expand on that a bit since it would seem logical that the lower rear is the one that pushes the axle backwards to both re-center it in the wheel well and restore wheelbase. Thx!
in most cases, it is more important to dial in the pinion angle (uppers) than locate the axle forward or aft. Generally, and especially with newer Jeeps, we're not lifting them 6"+ to fit a larger tire so the smaller lift height has less effect on axle positioning.
You said never put dual stabilizers on but you didn't give any specific reasons why.
Rust Country, was on my Jeep for a week before I pulled it off and threw it in the garbage, replaced with a RockSport (Metalcloak) which is 1000% better, for not much more of a cost.
You provided no hard evidence other than you saying they dont do anything. Seems like they work well for many people. So even if all they do is help reduce wear and extend the life of all your steering joints, why are they bad? Seems like your evidence is pretty subjective. Even if they just help dampen steering, how is that bad? You really didn't make much of a case against them except "steering stabilizers are a waste of money cause i said they dont do anything but dampen steering, so dont buy them and waste money." Was really hoping this would be an informative video with some sort of hard results or scientific test. Turns out it's more of an opinion peice.
"When aired down." Most important phrase in this entire video. If you aren't a guy who is so hard-core offroad that you bring along all the tools required to air down when you get to whatever road or trail that requires that sort of alteration to your rig, then MORE tire sidewall really doesn't make that much difference. Don't believe me? Look up tire tests regarding a 20" wheel versus a 17" wheel, but BOTH with a 33" tire, and BOTH with 35 psi (most common pressure for everyday use). You will see that if you leave the 35 psi, the tire deflection over obstacles is so similar between the two tire sidewalls that there isn't a clear reason to go 17" versus 20". In fact, that extra inch and a half really makes zero difference offroad UNLESS you air down. I personally don't know anyone that takes the time to air down if they are just headed to a remote lake or hunting spot off the highway. Bottom line; if you have a true hard-core offroad rig like a rock crawler Jeep that you air down for the day, more sidewall makes sense, so you can utilize that extra inch of rubber. But, if you are the other 90% who have a daily driver that sees occasional off-highway use and don't want to mess with the hassles of running 9 psi only to have to put 35 back in for the ride home, the practical difference is so minimal that esthetics should be more important. In which case 20's wins every time imo.
Sounds really great! Can you still control the exhaust sound open/closed from the vehicle button?
How important is it to upgrade your steering if you only drive around in the city? I have lifted my '09 Wrangler to be able to have 35's on her. Long story why I don't offroad, but do I need to beef up the steering from the OEM?
Would like to know lol
Thanks for the great question! For normal use on a 35" tires, and not off-roading you really don't "Need" to upgrade the components, just replace worn out components. What we see most of the time though is that the oem replacements are very close in price to upgraded versions so it makes sense for most people to get the much better quality part!
What gearing do I need to buy and have put on front and rear of a 2015 jk Sahara ultimate with auto transmission that is running 35” tires for the purpose of commuting (surface roads and interstate) and the occasional towing of a small trailer?
4.88's would work great!
@The Outlaw Offroad This Jeep is incredible! Is there a build video showing what's all gone into building it?
We haven't done a full build video yet! We may do a walk around soon explaining all the parts soon though.
Maybe you can help me, Im finding alot of misinformation on the interwebs. I recently got a sweet deal on a 2012 Jk sahara with a 3.6 , 6 speed manual on 35s. I believe it has 3.73s in it but not positive. It never sees 6th gear. The guy I got it from threw in a set of Yukon 5.13s front and rear with install kits on the deal but they were never installed. My question is are 5.13s going to be a little much? the jeep will see about 60% Montana highway and 40% steep mountains. Itll see some ATV trailer towing but not much weight. It is also highly doubtful of going to a bigger tire. Ive run many a jeep with 4.56 and 4.88s with 35-38 inch tires but theyve always been trailer queens or beaters that never saw the highway. This one is different especially with a 6 speed. You seem to have the info I need before I dump a ton of money into putting the wrong gears in and end up divorced because of it. lol
Hey Rob, great question! We want to answer this on our podcast, Dirt2Dust. @Dirt2DustShow here on youtube. Check it out on Friday!
What is your recommendation for a 2019 JLU 3.6L with 35’s but want to eventually move to 37’s? A mixture of road and off road if in the Rockies at altitudes.
4.88's would probably work great for you!
Ima come check yall for re-gearing
We can knock it out for you!

in your case, we would probably recommend the 5.13s especially with 37s
95% dont
U r not correct...my 86 chevy had 1...went bad...and u were all over the place!!! There was nothing wrong anywhere and it was new...on my 89 f150 it gets rid of most of that twin eyebeam bs...
Hey Preacher, if you have a dual steering stabilizer setup and one goes bad, but not the other, you will absolutely have some terrible driving characteristics!! Basically you have one steering stabilizer pushing one direction, and nothing to counter it, which would then need driver input. Correct steering geometry eliminates the need for dual stabilizers all together
think 32 in tires are good for 3.45 8speed got the 3.6 in there daily drivers// beach use
yes, thats pretty much the factory setup so you would be fine!
@@TheOutlawOffroad thank you for the response
All of these guys they can flex on the ramp. They need to checkout the you tube video of a stock Ford Model T flexing on a ramp. Puts these guys to shame.
Whats a "shift point". BTW I have manual trans....
Shift point is referring to an Automatic transmission. The computer sends a signal to the trans to shift at a certain RPM.
89 yj wrangler 4.2 early ax15 with 35s should I go 456 or 488? It's for road and trails
4.88 for sure!
Thank you
Been using a steering stabilizer, a dual one longer you’ve been sucking air
But they look super cool…so I want one hehe
If someone wanted to run 40" tall tires would 4.90 gears be okay? Ouverson offers 4.90 gears for the Rockwell 2.5 ton axles. (I do not know if anyone else offers other gear ratios for Rockwell axles). While 4.90 gears might still not be enough for 40's but it is still much better than the factory 6.72 gears. Especially if the vehicle is going to see very much highway or daily driving use. Thanks in advance for any and all advice, opinions, or answers. Regards
It really depends on what type of vehicle, engine, etc. While they are crazy strong, Rockwells are such weird axles
@TheOutlawOffroad Can you explain why you say Rockwell axles are weird? Not trying to argue but to better understand what you mean. Thanks
2020 ram 2500 power wagon running 315/50r22 going to go to 37x15.5r22 in next year or so. Truck about 9800lbs with bumpers an crap idea on a good or better gear over the 4.10
Thanks for this info bro!! Makes a whole lot of sense when going up a hill and I have to down shift a couple times just to get over the hill!! 🤙🏻
I have a question, I have a 1998 jeep zj with a 1m5 inch lift and I'm running 31's, I want to run 33's so I'm going to 4.88 gearing, but would I need a certain type of locker to that type of gearing or what?
2018 JK 2 door, 5 spd autostick, 3.6 motor, 3.21 stock gears. 315/70r17E's, in four low crawling I rarely need the skinny pedal, on the highway I rarely see 5th gear, 😂, oh sport, considering a UD44 up front, 3.5" game changer, lots of armor and a total belly skid, doubt I will ever go bigger than 35's, been thinking 4.56, but sometimes I think 4.88 or 5.13
4.88 if you plan on staying with 35s!
I have a 2013 automatic on 37s and just put 4.88 but driving on the freeway my RPMs get pretty high 4.88 would not performed the same way on high-speed?
higher rpm on the highway is the trade off for a deeper gear ratio. You get more torque on the low end to push those 37s but it takes some of that power out of the top end
Are there beadlocks that can be driven on the highway? I plan to build up my rig and I am not going to trailer it. Do I need to have two sets of wheels and tires?
No state has outlawed them, as far as I know. In Texas. Not a single LEO will write you a ticket for driving on road with bead locks. It’s not against any law in Texas. HOWEVER… if you’re involved in an accident that causes the life of someone and it’s the beadlock that’s at fault, their lawyer will come after you for it because it it’s t DOT approves.
Great video.. one question i had was 06 TJ 4" suspension lift approximately 33" tires.. why are you so against the dual stabilizer and wouldn't the dual help stabilize better between the lift and oversized tires?
A dual stabilizer does absolutely nothing to help, and we hate seeing people waste their money on them. a 33" tall tire is not as heavy as one may think. proper steering geometry, proper caster and toe will help keep that jeep centered on the road and a normal stabilizer is more than capable enough to cushion any road feel.
If you're getting pulled all over the road, you need to check balance, steering geometry, and alignment
Do they not help you track better with a set of bigger tires ?
they do not. A proper alignment, tire pressure and steering geometry will help track better and a single stabilizer is more than enough to accommodate that
