I think anyone trying to learn to play Medtner should really try to absorb this recording, particularly Horowitz' articulations and broad shaping of the melody, while not going too overboard with rubato, this style is really perfect for Medtner's music IMO, and its a damn shame people slept on Horowitz playing Medtner at the time, just imagine a Horowitz take on the Romantica or Minacciosa.
"You ready dere? Den I go"
good sports
The piano was made before Steinway had a son
Not true. It's just the old block letter Steinway logo. The piano was CD186, built in the 1960s and used by Horowitz from 1965-1972. You can read more about Horowitz's pianos here: hankdrake.blogspot.com/2016/05/the-pianos-of-vladimir-horowitz.html
Is he carrying his piano with him
Beautiful.
In few minutes he had presented countless different colours..
his playing is in devil level
Great Work! Don't let anyone stop you!
That is so beautiful ❤️❤️❤️
Always wonderful to hear you play, Hank! I enjoyed this one. Merry Christmas ✨🎄☃️☕️❄️
Medtner Horowitz Columbia's "Songs of Christmas" Goodyear Tire Stores ... only in 1969 America. It wasn't really a golden age or the good ol' days, but where and when else could you pick up Horowitz playing Medtner and a set of tires at the same time?
It seems that the edition of the Christmas record that included this piece by Medtner was a limited edition. So does that mean there was another, more widely sold edition that didn't include the Medtner? "Only in 1969 America". I live in Australia, and was 15 in 1969. My parents bought a copy of that Christmas record, and it did include the Medtner piece. Is it unusual that this apparently limited edition found its way to Australia? I don't remember where they bought the record, but I have a feeling it wouldn't have been at a place selling tyres.
Brano wagneriano, l'introduzione..... Chopin caput del romanticismo. E Horowitz insuperabile.
And there was no, at least, live performances from 1969 to 1974 when he began to really dive into the beefiest of repertoire for the next 6 or 7 years until it almost killed him.
It is a musical tragedy that horowitz just could not get the record companies to take a chance on Medtner. No pianist was ever better suited to the flitting colours necessary to fully bring out the full charm of Medtner's music. One fairytale - just one! We know that Horowitz gave all-Medtner recitals whilst in russia. The lost opportunity is painful.
40 years ago...he was then 79...such imaginative,persona.. wiser playing than his hysteric period before the ultimate collapse in 1953!.
Wow. This is brilliance on multiple levels.
👍👍👍👍👍👍
Very nice, Hank!
Владимир Горовиц великий!
Beautiful rendition. SO much beautiful detail.
sounds like one of the Tchaikovsky Seasons...
Not at all
@@PogouldangeliwitzI think it actually does - and at 2:30 to 2:32 you will also hear a slight plagiarism of Schubert's 'Das Wandern' (the vocal line). I once played on Tchaikovsky's piano. I used to play June from Tchaukovsky's 'Vremena goda' (Seasons)
@@militaryandemergencyservic3286 I don't see any plagiarism there
@@Alex-iu7dl fair enough
@@Alex-iu7dl however at 00:39 i note yet ANOTHER of Tchaikovsky's seasons is plagiarized - the middle section of the June barcarolle! So that's 3 plagiarisms already!
Very nice
I read somewhere that VH was furious at Artur Rubenstein for getting a hold of a whole lot of Medtner manuscripts - - do I have that right? If so, did Rubenstein ever record those pieces, whatever they were?
I have never heard that story. There's no record of Rubinstein playing Medtner in public (at least after he emigrated to the US in 1937) or making any recordings of his music.
Cool drive plus clouds!
Excellent!!!!!
Thanks, Jed!
When I heard the CD transfer I got a shock. Fortunately I still have the original LP .
I wish he recorded more Medtner.
It's a shame because he had lots of Medtner in his repertoire. RCA let him record Clementi and Scriabin, but they really wanted him to play more Chopin and Liszt and forget about the lesser known repertoire.
@@derby2510 dang that is unfortunate
Same
We were just there from the 12th to the today. We might make a trip to Hawaii next. Not sure though. We will have to save up about 2500 dollars. We stayed at the Luxor Hotel. It was so hot there. I couldn't stand walking around in the heat. We had to get new shoes to walk around. My old shoes I had for a year.
Hypnotic and haunting.
Thanks Alexander!
Wow. Hank Drake. My boss from back in the day! It's cool coming across your channel. You got married! Congratulations!
Beautifully played .....The Hermann themes are so haunting in this Movie especially that Eb minor chord with the dnatural ...Love it ! Thanks Hank me lad
I went there :D I love Vermont and Ben and Jerry's ice cream :)
The pitch of the LP seems high!
Thank you. The use of rejected takes on CD is abominable.
@lheld1957 Thanks for your kind remarks. I've never thought of variations on the love theme - which is itself influenced by Wagner's Tristan. But you've given me an idea and if I feel inspired I'll work on it. I did get therapy on my hand (actually, my right wrist took the brunt) after the injury. I progressed to the point that I'm able to play about a 1/2 hour at a time.
@TaraEllis41 Thanks for the correction!
Blue Angels were not here 2011. It's the Airforce Thunderbirds
Thank you, Hank! I had a feeling that there were slight differences in the CD sound - esp. in the climax. I really do wish they would stop messing around with VH's approved takes.
Lovely gift from you and Horowitz on his birthday!...
the 2002 parade was one of the most colorful and ambitious events. A real memorable event. Thank you for showing it here on youtube.

One of our favorite places to eat at Epcot, always great how they put in a show along with the great meal.
@camofrog Thank you! No strings, just me at the piano.
Super cool and well played! I can hear the strings behind you. Did you arrange this?
