The trials and tribulations of a lover of all things mechanical. I'd love to own a lathe or end mill, but alas, I'm here in my garage musing over and getting things done without them.

NGL I'm envious I can't get the pinion out of mine I've beat on it with a sledge. And it still isn't coming out
Thanks for the video. Was able to do this myself tonight. for 07 RX350, this is impossible to do without disconnecting the power steering lines and removing the PS pump entirely from the vehicle.
Thank you for uploading your adventure. I've wanted to restore a cabriolet for some time now, so it's nice to live vicariously through these videos!
No body explains the shim correctly
Thank you! I just bought a Camry with a rubber hose and did an entire search on CZcams. I found out that basically there are only 2 videos on youtube showing how to replace the rubber hose with a metal hose for the power steering pump. The other one showed pulling the axle out to gain space, which is not ideal for me. I hope your method is going to work for me. I'll try it when it gets warmer! 😄 By the way, what is the torque spec for the power steering pump bolt
keeps getting more and more daunting!
Trevor, you are doing a fantastic job! We’ve owned 4 of these cars! I need to do some of the same body work I see you’re tackling on our 92 affectionately named “Ginger”. She needs the lower section of the front window frame replaced. I see you too have a complete front window frame. I look forward to see how you’re going to replace yours. Keep up the great work! I have a lot to learn! Many tanks!! Dean Bradenton, Florida
Thank you for the kind words Dean. It's going to be long journey and I'll be extremely happy if I can turn the key and start the car by the end of this year :D
A blade on a saws all? 👍🏽😀❤️🇺🇸
Pretty much what an air scraper is ... got one on order :D
Did the entire differential housing have to be pulled out of the vehicle to do the job?
For the locker, no, it can be done in vehicle but will be much more difficult.
super nice work
Why would the replacement line (that we’re supposed to be changing it to) fail?
Glad to see you back at it!! Welcome back!
Hey, thanks! going to ease back in and post more regularly as I overhaul this Mk1 Cabriolet and share tips/tricks I've learned along the way.
Hellllooooo!!
Howdy stranger!
That oughta keep ya busy for a couple minutes...
I got a 2007 avalon ..i see rubber part but i dont see any leak i see a leak by the steering pump so could it come by the bottom bolt behind the block?
Great video, I'm glad to see there is someone else who does car maintenance stuff on their reloading bench.
Preload on the pinion is 18-22 inch/lbs I believe. Also the main caps are between 97-102 ft/lbs.
Summit racing sales a crush washer that easily crushes. I personally used it twice with no issues. Used my impact while holding the socket and bumped it a little at a time until it was perfect. Otherwise you need two people to do the job.
Wrap some black tape around ur universal socket exten. That way it wont be so floppy.
So you didn't show how you fixed it, just showed the problem.
Not in this video, but I have a detailed fix video on my channel. If you search the channel for “3.5L fix” it should show.
OMG, so sorry to hear about your son and sincerely hope as time goes by it will be easier for you to deal with this. I got back into reloading after a few years off and was looking for your reloading videos from the past to revisit them as I thoroughly enjoyed them since I also have a LNL Press. It sucks that CZcams is run by a bunch of liberal idiots that promote the far left and hate anything to do with guns. Please let me know when and if you are able to retrieve and upload all those reloading videos you took down on your new channel. if you do a Patreon gig I would subscribe Will always remember "Like a boss"
I have 2007 lexus es350, 100k plus miles, no issues yet with the vvti/oil cooler lines. ****But I plan to switch them out before failure.
Is the crush sleeve really a one time use item? It’s going to cost me 40$ I really don’t want to spend that if I don’t need too
Thank you. This is so much detail and explanation on the replacement.
To reinstall the PS pump, You have to loosen the engine block bracket bolt that the Power Steering metal-line-bracket screws into the Engine so the PS pump has enough wiggle room to line up & thread & tighten the the pump bolts. Then tighten the bracket bolt that you loosened.
Makes no sense they would have made one 3 piece and rubber in the middle
Thought the 'saddle washers' went on the bottom bolt? Just for ease of connecting. That engine is really clean!
What about the spider gears
Those outer side bearings, how do they pull out or press in? Need to replace the outer output bearings (closest to the outer seals)
The output shaft (outer sides) bearings, how do you replace them? Pulled from the outside or inside?
For the 2GRFE engine I recommend replacing the line with the ALL METAL LINE Toyota 15772-31030 Pipe, Oil 2008-2018 Toyota 1577231030 - the rubber is the point of failure (video shows old rubber part replacement). Copper washers (rear, one-piece) 90430-16016 Copper washers (front, separate) 90430-16017
This video helped me rebuild my differential & set the pinion preload correctly. Thank you for taking the time to create this.
that screws are not supposed to hold the frame together this is a fail unless you use structural screws
put the carrier in the freezer for a few hours and the bearing in a 200deg oven and it will slide right on without a press or beating on it
No need put pinion in freezer. Just heat the bearing will do. I used an old milk can an put the bearing on top while heating with my torch. I used my left hand to slowly turn the bearing so the heat is applied all around the inner bearing center.
@@alcyon2sp freezing the pinon wont hurt the heat treatment of the metal, Over heating the bearing will. So freezing the pinion just gives you the ability to do the same thing at a lower temp vs just heating the bearing, just a safer way to do it.
@@DBLDREW i used a laser thermometer to check the temp.
@@alcyon2sp not saying it cant work your way, just saying its a smaller window for error because you need to go to a higher temp to get the expansion.
good video where are your spider gears? and what about the lube? i just took one apart and the bearings had failed, no shims just 2 thick spacers. there was evidence the lube had broken down, all the surfaces were coated with black sludge and the lube was quite thin. should i doubt synthetic ? 140w
I’m actually buying a 2004 ford econoline 4x4 quigley conversion next week. The whole interior except for the cab is completely stripped. I’m going to do a minimalist interior with no seats or bed, but storage built into the body panels using 1/4” aluminum, sound deadening and cover it with bedliner. I’ll probably do a few molle panels on the calling and make a shelf a piece the windshield. Roof rack, ladder on the rear, full bed liner for the paint job. The one I’m buying has only 30k miles on the drivetrain and 1 to. Axels along with AR. Air lockers front and rear. I’m Super excited To start the build. Its actually going to be my daily driver. Lol
The torque for the union bolts is 42 ft*lbs and the the top part of the line is supposed to have two crush washers, not a clip washer. If it works it works I suppose.
You had access for days on that Camry. I just did it on an 06 Avalon and I honestly think completely removing the power steering pump is probably the way to go on that car. I had to undo the sway bar links just to give it a few extra mm of space and I could still barley get a small socket with a u-joint on it. You might be able to get a torque wrench on it if you remove passenger side engine mount. You wont have but maybe enough room for a click at a time if the power steering pump is still in the car.
Some suggest removing the bottom engine mount and with a jack and wood block under the oil pan, raise and tilt the engine up a few inches.
Do I need a jack if I remove the upper passenger side engine mount ?
what happened to you 1892 videos? They were the best! I finally got one and needed some tech stuff you put up!!
Shit! I am so sorry for your loss! I didnt watch the video. I feel like a ass!
@@garyday4515 No worries, I took all the gun related videos down to make them private after CZcams demonetized the channel. I'm trying to figure out how to handle reposting them without affecting this channel as I'd like to keep it monetized and share my other non-gun related things. I'm going to have to split off onto another channel, which will be completely demagnetized, but of course, CZcams doesn't make this easy for you as a creator. All my original gun-related content "raw" files are long gone so I need to find the time to visit the creator portal and download them in order to re-upload them to a new channel. I'm hoping to get to this soon.
@@trevorsgaragemusings Thanks for the reply. I have watched those videos over and over waiting for my rossi. After a 2 year wait I have a stainless 357 on the way. I hope I can smooth it up from my memory of your videos.
Got a 07 Camry 3.5 and guess what 201321 miles and no problems, thing scoots and runs amazing, never had any problems, sucks to suck I guess
That’s a terrible thing, not much anyone can say to help. Hang on dude
So why didn't you use the all metal hose so it want bow out
Bro just use oven cleaner foam spray, wouldn't even need to use any scrubbing materials.
Right off.. that's wrong
You cannot put the bracket on to the power steering first! Very misleading do not try to put that bracket on first! A hour of my life I’ll never get back
