Is the gearstick actually stuck in gear .

Hello Alex. I just watched the previous video. If the wheels are turning it must be stuck in a gear. Lets say 2nd. Lets say also the selector for 1st/2nd has become detached from the selector mechanism, and lets also say you can actually select 3rd and 4th. If all those maybes are right, then when you do select 3rd and 4th it effectively locks the gearbox solid so hence stalling the engine when in those gears. Lots of ifs buts and maybes but it is a scenario that would explain the behaviour you are seeing. It might be a zero cost fix but a full engine out, trans separation and teardown are not a simple undertaking. Judging by your feelings about the rest of the car I suspect having a gearbox problem is just another nail in the coffin. Shame. Mart.

Oh dear . Poor Sparky. Should always look at filling cooling system from the plug on top of thermostat. The expansion tank is just that... it's there for expanding and works under pressure with cap on. I wonder why you suddenly lost power.... i hope that water has now not got into the engine? (Headgasket) It was smoking a bit. Best of luck Alex! X

I found my allegro kept going through clutch plates until I was told you need to use spaces on it to get it setup right.

Think you'll have a lot more 5hr sessions with this one Alex. I was watching that jack thinking don't fall off it while that front wheel is turning 😂. Structure looks as weak as a kitten, best of luck if you keep going with this one...how's the neighbours 😂

Judging by the smoke coming out of the back looks like it is burning a lot of oil? I wish you luck with it though, I had a couple of Allegro's, a 1500 LE in Tara Green and a 1500 Estate in red, both bought new in 1978.

The Allegros engine is running so well! Shame about the gearbox though. This car is definitely worth saving for its rarity alone, I'm sure there would be people in the Allegro club who would be willing to help. Hopefully its something simple. Fingers crossed!👍

it might be worth just whipping it out and taking a look alex. do u have a spare gearbox to cross reference?

Alex with it jacked up running in 1st gear jab the brakes on and off to free the clutch plate off. all the best.

I wonder if some of the dog teeth are a little stuck. Assuming the rad is ok, could you run it in neutral for a good long while and let everything warm up? Maybe it'll free something. Bad oil maybe as well...?

Good news that you have got it started, and the engine sounds good. Puzzling re the gear selector.

Give it to Derek. "Will it run and drive 4200 miles home?" In all seriousness, take gearbox out, have a cheeky gander? Maybe it's something obvious and cheap.

What happened to Georges old engine? Did that have a gearbox on it ?

Alex. I would take the clutch out and the bellhousing off. The problem may lie with the little gear down at the bottom of the gearbox that you can attend to quite easily.

I think you need saving - long queues for tea and a polystyrene cup! The gentle Alex official maintenance set is what you need, it comprises of a 3kw lithium power station, a 1 pint milk fridge, a decent kettle, a china teapot, cup and saucer and a supply of suitable water (tap not bottled) ... we can't have our Alex missing out on a decent cup of tea any longer! Lovely show and really cool commentary! ;-)

it does run, but the aftermarket ankle vents might be an issue.

Can you still get brake pads with the sensors on them

Lovely day out it was the second time I took my sirion managed to track down some original wheel trims since the first time I went last year. the person getting out of my car was my father who turned up in his yellow SD1 when the show was held at the garden center last time due to the field being muddy

Hello Alex , Are you sure its stuck in gear ? , I've seen cars on ramps with the wheels turning slowly like on MOT's before and they weren't in gear .

My mum had a 1982 Allegro 3 from new, she ran it until about 1992 when she got a Sierra and it went to my brother, then my sister had it before it was eventually sold. It died sometime in in the 00's when it was involved in a minor accident and the insurance company wrote it off. I drove it for a week once when my car was being repaired, tbh it was a bit of fun at first but I was pleased when I got my car back.

Well done Alex. If you can do most of the prep work, i can always come and visit with the welder and put some metal back into Sparky 😄
