Fireside Chat with Makers of Makerspaces
Recorded Date: May 14, 2024
Join Dale Dougherty and a panel of makerspace leaders for a conversation about the challenges of running a community-based makerspace. Some makerspaces closed during Covid, while others survived and some even prospered. We learn more about how these makerspaces are doing, whether their membership has changed and what are some of the priorities and plans for the future. We want to promote the sharing of ideas and lessons learned among the people who lead and operate makerspaces.

“Echoes of the Heart” is ambitious - a 9-foot-tall, biomorphic anatomical human heart intertwined with a network of LED-lit tubes that carry a series of audio recordings from the inner speakers to the outer openings of the shell. These recordings range from painful to loving and and imbue the piece with a kind of living memory contributed by participants (up to 50,000 recordings!). This project...

Thank you for hosting such an awesome livestream! We had a great time diving into the story behind our Openterface Mini-KVM. Big thanks! 🙌
Thanks a lot
i just watched your video about foxhole radio, nice to see u still update :D
nice
Is this different from the volumetric printing methods we saw 5 years ago? How so?
I'm a little on the fence. On the one hand you need another computer instead of having everything in one package like the PiKVM, but on the other hand it would be a nice addition to my home lab where I could hook it up to my proxmox server and just start a VM to use it over the network.
Humans like men with hair, humans like bald men, humans do not like balding men.
Where can I purchase this glue from? Thanks for the video!
I'm a fan of networked solution, so raspberry pi zero 2 w + CSI-2 C779 module + usb cable (for emulating keyboard and virtual drive but also to provide power from host) + pikvm software + 3d printed case (~$100-$110 total). Works nicely.
Soldering heat will cause the wire to be brittle at that point. Tinning the wire and then bending it is a failure point also. I dont care what NASA says..
Perfektní práce👍👍
I love Maker Faire! I'd been going to Maker Faire in the San Mateo Expo Center almost every year since it started. Now that it's on Mare Island, I probably won't be going anymore because I can't get there on my electric standup scooter. I much prefer the atmosphere at the SM Expo Center anyway.
Thanks so much to Scott Hensey for his formula and method 👍👏👍His wax has fantastic qualities. But for me this wax presents two main problems: 1- you must first sketch out the sculpture with a soft material, then make a wax print and then finish detailing... all this is a nuisance for me, I want to be able to start and finish with the same material. 2- this formula, probably due to the large amount of talc, which is also the element that together with the paraffin allows the surface to be so pleasantly smoothable with a hard tool, makes working with the wax pen and other hot tools very difficult, in as the wax does not DROP easily.
Thank you so much!!!! I thought I had bricked my printer until I watched this video!!!
Bring in sponsorship for Kipkay so he makes the cool videos guys! We miss him!!!
The problem with many machines is more the software, especially for beginners it is difficult to deal with CAD software, many of these stations neither have simple software nor do they have 3D scanners and usable lasers for wood and metal engravings on board, especially in the gun range Grips or weapon engravings are of very little use to this CNC.
Almost sounds like Howard Sten on the radio lol
Hello! In this project all of the devices must be connected to one wi-fi network, but how to connect from another net, for example?
It is a rebranded BRAVOPRODIGy.
Used this multiple times
Oh, you big, bald, CHICKEN! 😂
nice sub. ive got a 5512 trop
You totally helped me, thank you!
Remember to wash your hands after soldering with lead-tin solder!
You can also use a brim with zero spacing that gives you control of the layers 1 or 2 or more This makes the thickness precise in the tear off easy, but with zero spacing it it holds the part down
Doing these projects in my parents' basement as a kid was such a formative experience. Much gratitude for the positive educational impact you've had on people like me.
I would love to see more chats with makers of makerspaces. I'm part of a groupe trying to get one going as well.
2008! Duudez! I didnt even notice until I notice Great video!
Box fan, in the UK we use a floor fan or a desk fan.
My felllow men of culture .. The recoil 😳
I am trying to replicate it for another function. Unfortunately, I can't see everything clearly in the video. Is there a video where it is more visible and goes slower?
Can you tell me why you are using a resistor? What is its function in the circuit?
If it can print texture do you think it can be used to make embossing folders ?
$60 for this annoying thing?? For $60 or a little more, you can buy a beginner's music keyboard for the kids to learn how to play real music on! They won't learn any maker or electronic skills with this!!
Did you fix the switch problem?
how come nobody is Making anything people actually need, or better yet manufacturing machines that Make things people actually need? I mean, income is important, but shouldn't this be about something getting these tools and technologies into the hands of people who aren't just trying to generate income, but could use them to Make their own lives easier and more successful? From a certain perspective, this video paints a sad picture of the reality of organizations like these. And the futility of supporting them.
People are making useful stuff all the time. The problem is no one wants to see the useful stuff. It's a bit like logging on to Facebook and going "Man, everyone is doing all this awesome stuff and are so happy..." No. People are posting the interesting stuff when they're happy. You're only getting the interesting and happy slice of the pie because that's what people want to see. But believe me, the useful stuff happens too. Heck, just today I built a shelf in my Makerspace. It's not worth posting on instagram, but it does what I need.
What kinds of things are you thinking of? Maybe cabinets, pillows, speakers, a sound bar, cutting boards, bowls, art pieces?
Great video. Do you think this can work in an old pulse phone?
it should work too!!
this is neat :) DAMN!!!! This is going to be 9ft tall !!!! :O!!!! There doesn't seem to be a link for recordings or better instructions.
The build can be followed on Rob's instagram instagram.com/artby369/. We will connect with him on how to submit a record. Thanks!
I often look at my list of subscribers and see if I should continue to sub or drop. I looked at your channel today and this video title flashed like a red flag. I know it was 3 yrs ago but it's still here and that's my clue. WTAF. Bye, "make".
Great overview - thanks tons!
Thank you, what a great idea using hard cover book to make custom Blu Ray box sets and DVD box sets
Very nice video. Could have mentioned that the die is directional as well. It usually has a wider gap on one end for easier start.
