DIY | How to Create a Custom Background for Tropical Terrarium/Palludarium
In this video, I give my step by step process for creating a custom tropical background for tree frogs, lizards, snakes, and other tropical animals. The two primary materials used for this project are expanding foam by great stuff and dark brown silicone. Other materials include an Xacto knife, sponges, weed blocker tarp, plant pots, paint brushes, jungle mix soil, moss, rocks, sand, wood branches, tropical plants, and the 12x12x18 exo terra front opening terrarium. The animals I placed in this enclosure is the Baja California tree frog (Pseudacris hypochondriaca).

In today’s video, I briefly give a summary regarding the life of the Gopher snake (pituophis catenifer). There are roughly 8 subspecies of gopher snake. Those that I captured in California are Pituophis catenifer annectens. These are the most widespread snake in California ranging in habitats from forests, grasslands, deserts, and agricultural areas. They get their common name from the behavior...

    Hey I know your taking good care of your bearded dragon but I recommend you get a Arcadia T5 linear uvb bulb because even though you take your bearded dragon outside during winter your dragon might go into burmation with is the equivalent to hibernation for reptiles and he’s gonna wanna sleep in his enclosure so you might want to change to the uvb i recommend because the Arcadia T5 linear UVB makes over they recommended uvb it’s very excellent and it’s priced at a pretty good price 50 dollars if you have a petsmart membership and it includes the bulb and the fixture it’s a good investment and yea :D

    Bearded dragons need to cooldown at night, in nature it gets cold at night. So no heat mat is needed. I also think his enclosure is too small for a bearded dragon. They need to be able to run in their enclosure. In our country a little tank like that’s called animal abuse.

      That should be fine, the main concern is making sure they don’t accidentally eat any of it. They also occasionally like to burrow in it.

      Honestly, there has never been a time any of the lizards have left any waste on it so I’ve never had to actually clean it. But if there were to be waste, some water would remove both the waste and the clay but you can probably just replace it with some clean excavator clay.

    Thanks for the video. I just got one a month ago that got caught and donated to the pet store i work in. Im so confused. idk if i have a gopher snake or a bull snake. or are the the same specie? I don't even know if it's Pituophis catenifer or some other species. Interesting experience though. It escaped for the first time after i made a mistake but i found it. RIP the 3 rodents it attacked. Maybe the heat in the room made it extremely aggressive

    • @Joels_Animals
      @Joels_Animals Před měsícem

      Hello! Gopher snakes and bull snakes are the common name given to the same species so yes they can be used interchangeably for the most part. I’ve found that people more in the Midwest tend to call them bull-snakes more often. There are, however, many different subspecies depending on the location which are more often given the common name bullsnake such as Pituophis catenifer sayi. That is an interesting story thanks for sharing! Thank you for watching!

    One more question how can i tell if they are in fact alligator lizards?

    • @Joels_Animals
      @Joels_Animals Před 2 měsíci

      It can be difficult since many lizard eggs look the same. I would try to do some research on the native lizard species in your area to see what is most likely and prominent in your backyard. I like to use the app inaturalist. If you’ve noticed there are many alligator lizards in your yard, it most likely was from one of them.

  • @jennyjordan146

    I found 10 alligator lizard eggs in what I thought Was a ground squirrel hole. I flooded it and the eggs popped up. I collected them and put them in a tank with a red lamp. Temp has been kept at 80° and I keep it moist with daily spraying. I don't really know what I'm doing. How do I know if they are even alive? What if I put them upside down? Do you have any advice for me? Your video was very helpful. I do plan on releasing them back where I found them. If they live...

    • @Joels_Animals
      @Joels_Animals Před 2 měsíci

      Hello! It sounds like you’re on the right track! At this point you cannot really tell if they’re alive unless they’re at a late stage in development which really depends on when they were laid. Candling them with a light may make things more visible. I recommend leaving them in the position you found them, if you don’t know how they were positioned I would just leave them on their side and not upside down. One very important aspect is making sure where they are placed does not attract too much bacterial and mold growth. New Zealand sphagnum moss is usually good with this or other medias like perlite. I would just try not to keep it too damp. Thank you for watching!

      Hi! You can have multiple in the same tank and they will not harm each other, however, if you do not have a lot of algae and they finish eating all of it, they will likely start competing for a food source unless more is supplemented. Thanks for watching!

    When l was a young child l came across one of these in my backyard. It was around 1962. I lived in Chino California. Chino is around 20 miles south of Los Angeles near the cities of Ontario and Pomona. It had to be one of the very last surviving members of that lizard in that area because that area is now covered by nothing but houses. Miles and miles of nothing but hundreds even thousands of houses and streets. It makes me kinda sad that I saw one of the last surviving members of that species in the entire Chino valley.

      Wow yea these guys are very sensitive to urban development especially homes and agricultural land use. A lot of it goes down due to their very specific diet of harvester ants which really don’t do well in urban environments and get outcompeted by the invasive argentine ants. That’s an amazing story I would love to see these guys in my backyard. Thank you so much for sharing!

    I got myself a blueberry sea fan that has finally humbled me and its not doing so well in my display pico. I have been feeding daily for it but it seems to be melting away, or having algae fmgrow on it somewhat now after a few weeks. I got brightwell reef snow, live phyto, and reef roids as my food options. Live brine/copepods as well but idk if they go for that. Any tips appreciated

    • @Joels_Animals
      @Joels_Animals Před 4 měsíci

      Hey! Could the nitrates and phosphates be the cause of the algae? I’d try to carefully remove any algae from the surface of the gorgonian. Is it placed in a higher light area? I’d say for feeding, live phyto and live copepods are great. Adult brine shrimp might be too large for the polyps to consume but the larvae are perfect. I personally haven’t used reef roids but it may add some extra nutritional value to the live foods. Also what is the flow like? These could be factors that effect survivability.
