Insane Railfanning in North-Central Ohio: Heritage Units, CMQ, Wheeling, SD40-2s on a rail train!

On May 4th, 2024, there was plenty of variety in the Greater Cleveland area. First up was a swap move between CSX and the Wheeling in Wellington with a grain train. Next up was a welded rail train powered by two CSX SD40-2s, and then I raced down the line to catch the grain move again. Shortly after I got a heads up about a westbound 309 with the Virginian Heritage Unit leading a former Central Maine and Quebec AC4400; the last shot is the first two units returning back the next day. Enjoy!

On Friday May 7th, 2010 I went out for a day of railfanning with stormy skies looming for a pair of Conrail units on NS train 15T. Backtracking to Vermilion, Ohio, I set up trackside for some stormy shots and the tornado sirens went off. CN L583 ran from London to Paris, Ontario with a GP9RM trio, and I was there for the action! The RM stands for "rebuilt-Montreal," and it's cool to see these Canadian veterans soldering on in their homeland doing what they were built to do.

At the beginning of CP Rail's takeover of the old Central Maine & Quebec properties, old locomotives were the rule rather than the exception as railroads scrambled to put modern power with Positive Train Control technology onto lines that required PTC. The practice was short-lasted, but on January 2nd, 2021 I headed up to the northern border of Maine at Jackman to head them off. Enjoy!

Good Days on the Missabe: DMIR 403

I never saw it much, but back when DM&IR SD40T-3 403 was still in ore service, I managed to catch it three times on Minnesota's Iron Range weaving around curves and grades through the pines, running from Two Harbors to the mines. The footage is from 2016-2017; at the time of this writing, the unit is now captive in remote control service in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

We take a look at some of my best catches out on the BNSF system from Chicago to Washington's coast, primarily on former BN territory. You'll see plenty of green Burlington Northern units, Santa Fe bluebonnets and warbonnets, as well as some classic BNSF Heritage 1 power and a high headlight swoosh SD40-2 still retaining its Leslie RS3K horn.

Back in January 2017, CN paired up BCOL C40-8M 4622 and C44-9WL 4644 on the job from Partridge/Negaunee to Gladstone in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. 4622 still sported its original K5L horn at the time! While the engine is now retired, enjoy these clips from an era of railroading when variety was easier to come by.

Soo Line Survivors

While I was never able to see the Soo Line Railroad in its prime, CP Rail was very gradual in repainting their former SOO fleet since the acquisition, so hockey stick and candy apple units remained somewhat commonplace on trains until positive train control wiped out the remaining fleet. Enjoy some of my catches of old Soo Line locomotives from 2015 to 2019, all over the Midwest!
