Few people know that in Poland in the 1970s, a collection of transcriptions of cello suites by J.S. Bach for double bass was created, being unique on a global scale. For many years they had been developed by Tadeusz Pelczar, the first double bass player of the National Philharmonic and a longtime professor at the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. The suites were published in 1971 by the PWM Edition and have been reissued twice.
With my project "Lost Transcription" , I want to introduce you to this amazing transcription.
Enjoy,

Gigue - an elephant is in the room!
I recorded the cello Suite No.3 transcribed for double bass by Tadeusz Pelczar at the the Municipal Zoological Garden in Warsaw. The very idea being pretty surreal, there are many reasons that made me do it.
The Municipal Zoological Garden in Warsaw is a modern institution responsible for the protection of endangered animal species, and its employees are people who first and foremost care for animals’ welfare. I’m the ZOO’s neighbour and regular. It’s important and crucial for my project to recognize that in the contemporary world subtle early music found itself in the position of an art genre going extinct. And that’s why recording this almost forgotten transcription of Bach’s piece has a truly symbolic meaning.
My sister, who’s a vet, told me animals like music. That was confirmed by the staff of the Zoological Garden, wonderful people who talked me into playing for the elephants. These creatures usually listen to recorded music, but this time they had the opportunity to listen to live double bass playing.
‘Listening to music mean a huge enrichment for the elephants. They have a taste for French, classical, popular and rock music. However, the louder and lower the tones, the better. If they enjoy a particular type of music, they move as close as possible to the loudspeaker, raise their ears, and are clearly interested in the sounds. If not, they can withdraw deeper into their boxes or walk away in their pen. Music can calm them down, or make them be ready to play. It all depends on its type and Buba, Fryderyk and Leon’s moods.’ says Patrycja Kasprzak from the Elephant and Rhino Section of the Municipal Zoological Garden in Warsaw.
It is no coincidence that the most famous piece of the chamber repertoire for double bass is called ‘The Elephant’ (written by Camille Saint-Saëns). Like every double bass player, I know it by heart. In the ZOO’s Elephant House, I recorded the Allemande and Gigue parts from Bach’s Suite No. 3.
And the Courante was recorded in a confined arena under the lions’ pavilion, which long ago was to be a room for taming these animals. Fortunately, this never came to be true. It remains empty as the construction mistake made it get flooded by some underground watercourses. Today, it’s a peaceful place for the turtles to spend the winter. We were captivated by the fantastic visual nature of the dark space, and I believe that the recording will be a feast for your eyes too.
Classical music earned its place in the history of the Warsaw ZOO, including the most tragic period of the capital. During World War II, Jan Żabiński, Director of the Garden, created a safe ZOO shelter for people wanted by the Gestapo, and for Jews who’d escaped from the ghetto. The signal to hide or leave the hideout through the underground tunnel were the sounds played by Antonina Żabińska on the piano in their Willa pod Zwariowaną Gwiazdą [the Crazy Star Villa], that is, where I’m recording Bourée I and II.
Last but not least, my dog Buba has been with me for a year in all the preparations for Bach's recordings. Whenever I start practicing, she’s there under my double bass, relaxingly stretched out.
I would like to thank all the workers of the Warsaw ZOO for their enthusiasm and help in making the recording. I’d like to express my gratitude to the staff and the animals in a form of a charity recital for the protection of endangered species, being sort of a ‘late fruit’ of my project. Hope you will hear more about this idea soon.

Fantastic
Bass God
Excellent. Where can I download this sheet music sir?
I would love to play this so bad, by any chance can you share where you find the transcriptions? It's so damn nice hearing the double bass as this
wow, what a nice surprise to find this performance. beautiful performance. 🙏🏻 and loving the register here .... sonorous! are these transcriptions available for purchase anywhere? i took a quick look online and didn't see anything .... 🤔🤞🏻
It puts me at peace to listen to this.
Dear Tomasz, What a beautiful redemption of this suite. The lower key (a fifth down?) really sounds well, I maybe like it even better then the original key.
Flawless
Hi, Tomasz! Wonderful playing, Wonderful video!!! Glad to see you , after many years! 👏👏👏
Beautiful! Did you use the standard doublebass tuning?
Can I dislike this more than once on the youtube dislike button?
Clunky, out of tune, and short phrases that don't make sense. Cellists have already established how these should sound. Playing in a room that has lots of echo is a good technique to cover up scratches and such :)
I have an edition that I bought in Warsaw in 1987. "polskie wydawnietwo muzyczne". I learned to play it in that key.
I think this is the least performed suite, it is truely a tour de force. Bravo!
Wonderful, thank you
Shut up and take my money! That was incredible! Bravo!
Congratulations!! I have this edition from Master Pelczar and And I was wondering why he didn't arrange the Prelude for suite 3. Greetings from Venezuela. Bravisimo!!
Bellissima esecuzione ! 💫
Thank you for this. Very nice, relaxing and tonally beautiful.
Bravo👍👏
You have a new subscriber, Sir. And it really is my pleasure.
hello, very nice work. where can we still find this edition, it no longer seems available at PWM
Finally a double bass that sounds like a double bass and not like a cello
Hi Tomasz I didn't know this arrangements. They are amazing and really accurate for developing doublebass technique. Do you know where can I find/buy this music? I really appreciate your work. Best Wishes Ruben Castañeda
Is this gmajor????
G minor
@@timmiller-basscal Thanks 😊
Sure! Also you might want to check out Yung-Ho FU. He does it in a similar way and objective as this but in a minor. He has a CD and annotated sheet music. The problem here with Pelczar is that I cannot find a copy for purchase.
Interesting phrasing
Fenomenal
Bravo Tomasz! Excelent! Greetings from Greece!
Absolutely beautiful!
What a gift to humanity to share this amazing performance of pelczar's trabscription, I studied for a bit with Andrzej Kalarus and we used this same version.
Well played. I transposed the prelude to the key of D years ago and it really takes advantage of the open D string in the same way the original (cello) arrangement uses the open G when you play it on Double Bass. Because I learned it originally in G, it was easy to transpose by ear, I never wrote out the full arrangement but it sounds wonderful on bass. C is nice too but you don't get the benefit of the open string for the initiation of the phrasing. Try it if you're a bass player!
I wonder, "what would it be (from a technical point of view) in A Major key when played on a Double Bass?" (Dan Bolger, thanks for the suggestion above)
Its not lost I have it as well.
I am also looking for the scores. Please can you give an advice where I can get (purchase) them? Thank you very much!
Amazing 👏
Master performance
It's so beautiful and I feel I am so lucky to hear that. Thank you very much~
So beatuiful, thank you very much~~
I also enjoyed the text in the description
The pizzicati in the Sarabanda sounds cool.
Here in México, Polish professors have taught this transcriptions to many generations. Both of them, Dechnik and Kalarus have been principal double bass to the oldest orchestra in this country.
Kalarus it's my teacher :3

Hi do you know how to find the link. I've been looking for the cello suite n.2 but I can't find It
Lo quiero, m3 la puedes compattir
Wonderful playing, great sound
La mejor manera de tocar Bach en el contrabajo !! Que grande !!
This is amazing, fantastic! I used to play Prelude on bass guitar, it was quite a tough one back then. And of course it didn't sound so good for many reasons. I think that this piece sounds good on bowed instruments like violoncello or contrabass, of course you can play it on guitar too, but...that´s not it. Personally, I love Mstislav Rostropovich´s presentation of Prelude, it is pure perfection. An extraordinary violoncello player.
Wonderful performance! Bravo.
Thank u
👏👏👏👏👏👍
Czekałam kiedy dołączą słonie na trąbach. 😉 Myślę, że ta barwa jest im dość bliska.
Beautiful! This key compliments the bass really well! Are these transcriptions of the suites available to purchase somwhere? I havent been able to find them on Google.
Thank you very much. It's not easy to find this edition. PWM is considering a re-edition next year. Please contact me by e-mail. Maybe I can help you find a solution. TJ
I would also very much love to find these transcriptions. Would it be okay if I reached out to you for assistance as well?
Great! Thank you so much!
Great Performance! Where can I get this arrangement/transcription from?

@@timmiller-basscal That's a good idea! Sometimes I forget about the good old analogue world... 🙂
