Why Hip Dysplasia Often Goes Undiagnosed in Females with Hip Pain!
Why Hip Dysplasia Often Goes Undiagnosed in Young Adults 🔍🦴
As we wrap up June, which is Hip Dysplasia Awareness Month, let's shed light on some key reasons why this condition often eludes timely diagnosis. Awareness is crucial to ensuring better outcomes for those affected. Some common reasons for missed diagnosis.
1. Lack of Awareness Among Healthcare Professionals 🤔👩‍⚕️
While many therapists are well-versed in recognizing childhood hip dysplasia, they might overlook that this condition can also manifest during adolescence and early adulthood. Onset typically occurs between 18 and 25 years of age, often catching both patients and practitioners off guard.
2. Non-Specific Presentation Makes Diagnosis Tricky 🩹🦵
In its early stages, adult hip dysplasia often mimics muscle overuse injuries. Patients frequently report pain around the gluteal and hip flexor muscles, along with a persistent deep ache that intensifies with prolonged walking or running. These vague symptoms can easily lead to misdiagnosis or dismissal as simple muscle strain.
3. Overlap with Femoro-acetabular Impingement (FAI) Syndrome 🔄🏋️
As hip dysplasia progresses, its symptoms can resemble those of hip impingement. Patients may experience pain during activities such as deep squats or hip flexion, often due to labrum involvement. This overlap further complicates the diagnosis, as the conditions share similar presentations but require different management approaches.
4. Often Missed on Imaging 🩻❓
Standard XR of Pelvis reports may not always reveal hip dysplasia, leading to missed or delayed diagnoses. This gap can cause significant confusion and frustration for both patients and healthcare providers.
Raising awareness about these challenges is essential. By understanding the nuances of adult hip dysplasia, we can better support early diagnosis and effective treatment.
📢 Let's keep the conversation going and spread awareness!

no. you don't catch dysplasia. you either have it or you don't. many ortho surgeons will do keyhole surgery to fix the labrum but it's a temporary fix and generally will tear again. happened to me. I've since had PAO surgery to reshape the joint and it has worked well for me. it's a difficult surgery but was worth it to get my life back.
