Torvill And Dean - The Perfect Day
Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean's Documentary on their Olympic triumph 30 years ago in the 1984 winter Olympics in Sarajevo.

They are my very favorite couple of all time.
How sad that the greatest moment in ice skating history years later would be a war torn city. I remember watching that performance and not too many years later seeing snipers and destruction. So very sad.
Christopher never appeared particularly muscular to me, but wow, he could pick Jane up and move her around like she was a feather.
I'd never seen this programme before...brilliant memories...they were amazing and still are ! X ❤❤❤❤
I love that Irises are the reference for the color of the costumes-right down to the fringed edge of Jane’s dress. They are my favorite spring flowers.💜👑⛸️
They have made ice dancing rules more complicated. But they haven’t made ice dancing better, more beautiful, or more compelling.
I remember watching Torvill & Dean skating Bolero during the 1984 Olympics. No ice dancing performance has ever come close to the magnificence, beauty and brilliance of this gold medal ice dance. I loved it then and still love it now in 2024. Absolute perfection.❤❤❤❤❤
This is one of those rare moments in history that will shine externally. Of the countless times I've watched this routine (& the 1st was the original event), I was no more drawn in- almost enchantedly- as I was just now. Torvill & Dean were born to ice skate TOGETHER. They were phenomenal. Let's not forget that they were also blessed with outstanding choreographers & costume designers. An impeccable team.
Amazing skating and amazing music (Merci Maurice!).
What a feat! Magic I discovered only today. Ballet, beauty beyond belief. Unforgettable!
The routine hasn’t aged a bit, although I’d rather not have heard the story they were thinking about. The fact that it still looks new now, after 40 years, says just how amazing they were, how far they were ahead of their time, and what an amazing routine it was! The Russians looked so hokey and ridiculous in comparison, childish, really….and then The Adults take the ice, literally, lol!
In my city of birth. In my beloved country. It was fantastic…
Utter and complete perfection.
I never get tired of watching this performance.
Thanks a lot.
I saw this live. How lucky I was! Today I saw Ilia Malinin skate his Men’s Freestyle program, but not live. What a magnificent performance! Aren’t I fortunate to have seen both these performances! Aren’t YOU!❤😊
My sentimental favorite ice dance performance of all time. Still brings me to tears.
What a great program! I remember watching this live, and the music, the tempo, the gliding of Torville and Dean, the rising crescendo , all so mesmerizing, I don't know if I took a breath. As good today as it was then 😊
I think that I recently read they are hanging up their skates at last
And then .... They came out of "retirement" to compete .... And they were robbed. They should have gotten the Gold. They should have medaled. Instead, a bunch of purse-mouthed prigs scored them as tho they were the village idiots
One word Just PERFECT
It’s been 40 years! I was so nervous as the clock kept changing time. But like they said, they knew it perfectly, they could only ‘skate well’
They are still the best ever in 2024. No other couple has come even close. Thank you for a great video!❤
Mezmerized again..in 2024!!!!
I’ve s seen this documentary before and it brings back memories of watching them on TV when they competed in the Olympics. I was coming up to 11 years old at the time and I remember it like it was yesterday. It was magical and I think people loved the little story they put together for the routine, a doomed couple walking up a volcano to throw themselves into the crater. I think the feeling in the UK was essentially a feeling that all Jane and Chris had to do was turn up and they would win. Still, when all those 6.0s came up on the screen it was incredible. They absolutely deserved it too, it was a wonderful routine.
Torvill and Dean were unique: no one before them had ever told a story: Mac and Mabel; Barnum , Bolero etc It was a totally fresh approach. No one else has ever created such an atmosphere with their skating. Genius. Pure genius.
At 78 yo wish I could say my memory of the event was crystal clear. Family watching the Olympics any year just naturally happened; however, seeing in detail, rationales, designs, staging and skaters mental and physical approaches was spectacular. Soooo glad to have seen this recap. Like being there surreptitiously. Thank you for sharing. ❤🎉😊
Forty years later now- I was being scouted as a partner when I was 14 (late 70s in the US), and will never forget watching the performance on TV. Bolero has 'belonged' to Torvill and Dean ever since. I also remember thinking that as much as I'd wanted to keep skating (folks weren't much into dreams that didn't guarantee steady employment and a college degree), and '84 would have been a likely 'target' if the O's were in the picture... and I was so glad that I was home watching instead. Absolutely magical, and their transformation of ice dance from something stuffy into artistic genius has never been matched, though the creativity greatly increased in all ice dance after 2/14/84. I got a signed copy of a photo of that night a few months ago, and was SO excited. It has a place of prominence in my apartment.
I remember Torvil and Dean !! Wow. They put on a performance that was magnificent and beautiful. When I hear Bolero, I see them dancing to this music
I remember that dance like it was yesterday. My mother and I were so enamored by the creative choreography and beauty of their skating. We saw them in person in San Francisco in ‘84 and just could not believe how amazing they were. Thank you for bringing joy and beauty to our lives!!
It still gives me the chills. I got out of bed in the middle of the night to watch them dance to perfection.
I watched this too, at the time. It was wonderful & still is when watching it again.
They make me feel so proud of living in Nottingham ,well done T.and D.❤❤
It was and remains the most romantic, erotic and perfect silken performance ever on ice.
I remember seeing this when it happened (I was turning 35 yrs old in two weeks) - and I remember being absolutely and totally SHOCKED to my core at this piece. I was reminded of Toller Cranston (fellow Canadian) who also changed the face of skating. And I remember that once the shock had passed, and I realised what I had witnessed - I was hollering with absolute delight !! And they were both so warm and lovely and totally endearing - with a lovely sense of humour. Who could not fall in love with them ?!?
Just to say, i waited hours because of the poer cuts that night, but IT WAS WORTH IT ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT, i am 74 now, but the memory of that performance was lives on in my heart.
I watched Torville and Dean, and thought they were the most stupendous ice skaters I ever saw. They have lived in my memories all these years. Blessings on you both.
Absolutely the best I had the pleasure to see them perform in Brisbane ❤❤
40 years later, it still makes me cry! I never get bored of watching! Fantastic
Still the best.
I wondered whatever happened to them. Great to see them.
They are still about! They do a show called Dancing on Ice in the UK which teaches celebrities to skate with professional partners, it’s on itv 1 on a Sunday from January to March each year, the show has been running since 2006 and they took a break in 2014 and then the show returned in 2018 and is ongoing, Dancing on ice is currently on our uk tv screens on a Sunday night on itv
It looks like the footage from the actual performance has been cleaned up. All the footage I’ve seen of performances from Sarajevo in all events has been really poor quality so this is especially lovely to see just for that
In my eyes they were genius x 2
How weird that I didn't remember that it was Valentine's Day,, well, anyway,, I watched this on TV ! 😍😍😊
We are fortunate to have lived these days with them. They made my whole body goosepimple when they danced.
You were the best I loved you ❣️
Unlikely we will ever see such brilliance again, absolutely breathtaking, well done guys,TORVIL and DEAN no doubt will remain champions that will be remembered and revered always for their outstanding performances that held us all in awe every time they stepped onto the ice.WOW WOW WOW..
