ECMWF is the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
We are both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing global numerical weather predictions and other data for our Member and Co-operating States and the broader community. The Centre has one of the largest supercomputer facilities and meteorological data archives in the world. Other strategic activities include delivering advanced training and assisting the WMO in implementing its programmes.
We operate two services from the EU’s Copernicus Earth observation programme, the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). We also contribute to the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS).

The Weather-Induced Extremes Digital Twin, Benoit Vanniere
The Digital Twin for Weather-Induced Extremes, one of the two high-priority digital twins of Destination Earth, will support decision making for a rapid response to meteorological, hydrological and air quality extremes, on a timescale of a few days ahead. It has two components: a global component, developed at ECMWF; and a regional component, developed by a large consortium of European weather services led by Météo-France.
In this video, ECMWF scientist Benoit Vanniere introduces the global component of the Weather-Induced Extremes Digital Twin and its main innovative features, and highlights the necessary developments that have been undertaken.

zhlédnutí 609Před měsícem
Destination Earth (DestinE) is the European Union’s initiative to create a digital replica of our planet to better predict and respond to environmental challenges posed by extreme events and climate change. It is implemented over several phases by three entities, the ECMWF, ESA and EUMETSAT, each responsible for delivering specific components of the system. In this video, the ECMWF Director of ...

Machine Learning also plays an important role in Destination Earth. In this video, ECMWF scientist Mariana Clare presents the added values value of using machine learning to quantify uncertainty when performing DestinE’s highly accurate digital twins’ simulations. A method that allows us to potentially overcome important computational costs associated with running simulations at very high resol...

Please brace yourself. I focus on the frequent large hail storms with increasing sizes of 50-60mm. They are destroying the future solar energy of the EU continent, they are destroying food crops that we want to preserve under PV panels, the so-called Agri-PV. Please try to help change the standards for more durable Solar Double Glass panels, from the current thickness of 2-3.2mm to 4-5mm. They would really handle the current 50-60mm hailstones. We need your understanding and reports to all institutions responsible for rapid change. We await your official news. Private initiative alone is not enough. Europe urgently needs you. I expect this request to reach decision-making departments and leaders.
Hi everyone. I'm a bit late, and i've been unsuccessfuly trying to access the course materials. please help!
I just want a game where I can drive and fly to explore the planet in great detail. Essentially something like GTA, but much more detailed and bigger and realistic.
Fooled you theirs some icycki
Very good thanks alot for everything you are doing for climate, for world, for us.
Thanks alot for everything you're sharing with us;
I this is remarkable. Shows how hard it must have been back then to predict the incredible speed at which this system deepened. Weather bomb!!
I need assistance on how to create a bufr file.. no one responded to my email sent to support
Hi Kim, thanks for your message. Please use our support portal at confluence.ecmwf.int/site/support to raise a ticket detailing your request, and this is how requests can be tracked and assistance provided. Best wishes
I would like some assistance with bufr transmission

This was unnecessary who asked for this
i did
Your comment was unnecessary, attention seeking westerner.
No one asked for your comment either, but here you are
I thought it was very good. A nice insight. Some of the best things aren't asked for...
OK, great, but how on earth are air temperatures provided in what appears to be a mixture of Kelvin and Centigrade. Did you see as she scrolls the standard output showing fractional degrees together with classical surface temperatures in Kelvin. BUFR is such a stunning mess. A format in which some people just decide to encode the year with 2 digits while others use the more reasonable 4 digits. Perfect for a technology that was developed with the teletype era in mind and shows how many pitfalls one can encounter when we keep around a technology for over 50 years and do not enforce a proper standard. Endless hours of dealing with dumb edge cases when a strictly enforced data exchange model can make this 1000 times better. Come on weather world people, this is embarrassing in this data enabled age.
Great presentation
the video image is too poor, you need to fix it more

May i have this ppt file?

I can't zoom my visualization. I always get the following message: "Page to perform the zoom not found"
Hi, I don't recognise that error. Could you report your issue by going to confluence.ecmwf.int/display/SUP and clicking on "Report a problem", and create a new issue where you tell us which Linux or macOS version you're using, which version of Metview and anything else about how you created your visualisation? Thanks!
Would be great if the files eg. test grib be somwhere accessible (easier to follow the webinar)
Hi Anna, that's a very good point, and for the 2020 Metview webinars, we created Jupyter notebooks along with the corresponding data. For the 2019 one here, there are two notebooks that cover some of the material. All the notebooks are available from here: github.com/ecmwf/metview-python/tree/master/examples and the ones for this webinar are called "compute_wind_speed.ipynb" and "grib_interpolation.ipynb". I hope this helps, and thanks for the feedback!
Hello, Eccodes is a great library for using with Python. Do you knows how to install it as a "layer" to be used in a AWS Lambda function ? Thanks
Como faço adquirir esse modelo
would you please make a video how to install metview in ubuntu.
I don't have a video on it, but if you can install miniconda, then you can install Metview via the command "conda install metview -c conda-forge"
Hola que buen vídeo gracias
Thank you to ECMWF.
Hello! I don't understand temperature 2m correlation. What is it?
On what levels is this new model implemented? Only ground level or also vertical layers of temperature/humidity/pressure/wind?
Our forecasts also cover the vertical structure of the atmosphere, up to a pressure level of 0.01 hPa or about 80 km. For more details on our forecasts, visit our Forecasts page: www.ecmwf.int/en/forecasts
Thanks for the great presentation
