I realize this is an old video, and I am not the type to usually comment, but I just had to leave a note here for those that might find this video in the future. This was unbelievably helpful to me in learning how to properly use the prong collar. I have a 6-month-old, 50 lb. Doberman puppy that was literally dragging my 105 lbs self wherever he wanted to go. He would walk with me fine and then all of sudden see something or decide he wanted to sniff and then it was a battle to get him to come with me. After watching this video, I found a properly fitting prong collar and did exactly what she was showing in the video. I could not believe the transformation! My puppy was walking right by my side with just small light pops on the collar. We went the whole walk without any battles. I will say, for this first walk with the prong, I did use many small corrections to keep him in position, just as discussed in the video. Now, instead of dreading our walks, I am looking forward to progressing in our ability to heel and focus. I will add that it is important to invest in a good quality prong collar because they are NOT all the same! Herm Springer is one I know that is good, but I'm sure there are probably others. Just don't buy some generic knock off, you may not get the same results because of the way the prongs lay, if they are pointy or smooth, etc.

I have 2 heeler x border Collie crosses, both are 30+ lbs. 60 pounds of determined pulling can hurt this old lady so i gave the Herm Sprenger prong collars a try. What a difference! Its like power steering vs manual steering, allows me to have a much lighter hand on the leash. I like to imagine it like having a light touch on a horse's reins

i noticed u didnt use any verbal commands. would i benefit from using words like heel, leave it or whatever? many thanks and much respect

You are fitting the collar further down on the neck. Is that preferable to under the chin?

This may be a stupid question, but I've seen some videos where trainers let the dogs smell their surroundings while on a walk, why do you have a no sniffing rule? Is it a trainer preference thing? Just curious. I just bought a herm springer today and I'm excited to start training with my Shiba on it. She's such a good dog- until we get outside on walks. She nearly pulls my shoulder out of its socket. But only on the first half of the walk - pull pull pull. Then, when we turn back the remaining walk towards home she's a totally different dog. No pulling, loose leash... WTF? You think she's sad, or unhappy that she's heading home, and that's why... But nope! She's as happy as when she started, with the same exact disposition, smiling face with her tongue bouncing in & out of her mouth. Just a happy dog. So now I'm hoping the first part of her walks will be just as enjoyable.

The only reason I am finally able to walk my German shepherd/Texas Heeler mix is because of the prong collar. I tried everything else... nothing worked and now my pup doesn't sound like he's hoarse after his walks. Definitely safer!

This is the first video I have seen that does not use food! My dog could care less about food on walks so I find this very encouraging! I recently purchased a prong collar and am researching the first steps before I put it to use.

There are not many women like this left. kind, respectful, lovely, very little makeup or orange war paint. Free off tattooed eyebrows and the latest fashion cloths, etc. A great smile, a feminine body, and confident knowledge. Just great. I teach dogs to walk without the Herm in most situations. It only comes out for dogs who need the next level. bob on.

How tight should you have the prong collar on?

Married men know all about a prong collar. Our wives use it on us all the time. They call it a wedding band.

That prong collar is too loose for that dog

I don't use them for every dog, or even for most dogs. But when I do, I actually put one on myself and let owners correct me with it, so they can see that it doesn't hurt and isn't meant to hurt. The problem is that there are a lot of people who don't have correct timing or pressure, so it's not a tool for everyone. I look at them like a surgeon's scalpel: it's a specialized tool designed to help when all other options are ineffective. But, just like a scalpel, you have to be trained how to use it properly, otherwise you can hurt someone accidentally.

Most people put on pinch collars incorrectly, so they don't work correctly and that's why they don't like them. Once again it's the owner not the dog.

I have 2 dogs one is just barley a year old and the other is 8 months old. Both pull like crazy on a leash and we walk them everyday and have tried everything but a prong collar. I finally broke and bought one for my 8 month old dog because he is way bigger and stronger than my other dog. I'm watching videos to learn how to use it and now I'm worried about trying to train while my other dog is around (they feed off each others energy). Do you think I should just practice at first in my back yard before I take them both on a walk?

great video but may I ask, why do you not let your dog sniff the ground? I have a 1 yr old lab and it's in their nature to sniff and explore. what's the harm in letting them sniff? doesn't sniffing also stimulates their brain? thanks.

Great instructional video. Am waiting for my Herm Sprenger collar to arrive from Amazon. Can't wait to use the techniques learned from this video on my Pit-mix. She pulls like a freight train, and only weighs 65 pounds... My only suggestion for making this video even better is for the young lady to show off her smoking hot figure by wearing a micro bikini and high heels during the presentation...

I had a German Shepherd/Akita mix, and when I got him, he was a big time puller. I got him a Sprenger pinch collar, and within about 2 weeks, he never pulled again, and I was able to use a slip lead for the rest of his life, which unfortunately ended after 12 great years together a few weeks ago.

Is it too early to add the prong collar into my training for my 4 month old lab? She's very high energy and I'm having a hard time reinforcing positive behavior on the leash.

In my opinion the prong collar is so much safer for your dog. Especially the Herm Sprenger collar. It applies equal pressure around the dogs neck. The flat collars will absolutely hurt your dog if they are pulling. It puts direct pressure on your dog’s larynx which chokes them. When used properly nothing beats the prong collar. Great video.

Where can that heavy duty crate at the end of the video be purchased? Its 2023 and just came across this video. Wire crates today are made so cheap, if your dog has any desire to get out they most likely will be able to. I've done the whole zip tie/clips around all the edges and dogs have just pulled the wire cage itself apart and got out. The dog I need to crate is crate trained and has no issues being in the crate, its only when I'm gone for more than a couple hours she gets bored and would rather be sleeping on the couch. Plastic crates are useless, a few pounces against the door (by an 80lb dog) and the "lock" assembly (middle dial with one bar up/one bar down) just pops right out of place.

For the stare correction what level did you use? Still a 10?

Wow just tried a prong on my hard puller Aussie border mix and cured her pulling instantly. This is a game changing training tool for sure

My puppy is GSD-Dutch cross and very protective. He is very suspicious about other dogs and can be aggressive if he sees any sign that he does not like. He is friendly with most other people and especially with kids. And, there are dogs that he also tolerates in the neighborhood; one of them is a Greyhound which is known to be a very peaceful dog. Many people recommended going to dog parks to socialize him but I refused since I know he will start a big fight; not just barking, he goes for a full-fledged fight. And as you said, there is the risk of getting a germ or parasite. He is now 10 months old and, although I know protection and guarding are his natural instincts, he is going to be calmer with age and training. I see improvement every day as I show him my disapproval for unnecessary drama. And, he cares about my feedback although he struggles with his strong instincts. So yes, I say "No" to dog parks. Thank you!

The thing I don't understand is the no sniff rule. I have seen that with other trainers too. Is that done while you are training? Normal walk ok to sniff? That is the whole reason I am out there is for her. I have heard the the mental well being of the dog is the walk and the sniffing. I could see it during the training session as you are working on behavioral issues. Thanks for the info.

loved this for many reasons. I live in Brazil and have 2 two dogs that fence fight in small enclosed dog parks. I have a remote collar set for the two dogs but I've been afraid to use it - basically they were my ace-in-the-hole that I would use only as a last resort and I've tried many other methods. I didn't know that the highest shock for 2 to 3 seconds wouldn't be that big a deal. so I'm thinking of trying this especially when I see they're moving toward the fence before they actually start barking. THANKS!

I will crawl through glass before I go to a dog park. I cannot risk injury to my pups or training setbacks from going to one of these places. Other dog owners are far too complacent, lack the skillset needed to properly train and also manage arousal and many dogs do not have the necessary training to make these places a safe place. The only things dog parks are good for is proofing your dogs training, and this is done on the outside.
