It's pitiful how they treated the inmates of Auschwitz. Putting humans in what is essentially a barn like they're cattle. I couldnt imagine the terror they felt at the end of every day while sleeping on wood if theyd die tomorrow or not

One time I travelled to Auschwitz. When I stepped inside the base chamber, I immediately felt cold and got a feeling of pure terror. I still can't figure out why I felt so terrified of that room, even though I knew fully well it's purpose.

I always thought the gas chambers were built underground. In Schindler’s list the Jews were going down the stairs to the gas chambers

We now refer to platform 13 and 14 as 'nine and three-quarters' in our family.

You are asked not to take photos or video within the gas chamber and conduct yoursleves respectfully. Videoing and taking pictures of the chamber or the human artifacts is not respectful. I witnessed awful behaviour and even laughter in some parts of the camp. This is not a tourist attraction, its a murder scene.

That’s a very big shower with some nice glass windows and not a single blue cyanide stain on the walls! Who would be stupid enough to put glass windows in a gas chamber? If you want to see a tour of a real gas chamber look up a Majdanek tour. The real gas chambers were far more sinister looking. A stone wall room with no windows, one hole in the ceiling and another vent in the wall

My adopted great aunts and uncles died there. It's hard to watch.

My father fought the Japanese on the Kokoda Track, he was not a POW, thank goodness. What he went through was horrendous, I cannot even begin to imagine - what those poor souls went thru, at the hands of the Germans.

Although it might seem ludicrous to suggest, if you fell in above the Strid in these conditions, you are probably more likely to survive than if the river isn't in spate. Obviously, the chances of surviving falling in under any conditions at the Strid are pretty much zero but in high water there is a marginally lesser chance of being dragged down into the normal complex underwater topography. I've seen it a lot higher than this when it is over all of the rocks - pretty much including where the photographer is standing. Even in a drought with very little water flowing, it is still generally deadly. Although it is supposed to be 100% fatal, there have been one or two exceptionally lucky people who have survived (one back in the 70's from what I remember). It would certainly be "safer" to kayak when high water is running though it is still not a good idea.

You can see the fingernail marks on the walls left by the victims, it’s so horrific and haunting.
