Riding a 250$ Downhill Bike at the Park | 2016 Giant Glory | New Bike Day

Today I am showing you my first ride on my newest addition. A 2016 Giant Glory DH bike I grabbed for an absolute robbery of 250$. Got some fresh brakes, fresh chain, and a complete check of all my bolts, spoke tensions, etc and ripped it at Aspen Snowmass Bike Park. This was absolutely amazing. Never thought of getting a DH bike as 70% of my yearly riding is on trails, and my trail bike is perf...

In today's video I made it out to the Rifle Grand Hogback Trail system. I worked my way through almost every single trail here. Watch thru the video to see the best way to work up and down and around these trails to hit them all. This was my first time out here so excuse the line choice and trail speed at times. Here is a link to MTB project showing the route I took. www.mtbproject.com/trail/70...

For the stuff you rode in this video the bike is definitely overkill
Go pro fell off my mount before I hit the black tech and the jump lines… also first bike park day of the year and first ride on this bike I’m not gonna go crazy.
Hey JD, good vid on a great trail system! We rode there a couple of years back and will head that way again this year. Lotsa newer trails there. Now, let's get rid of that incessant "chirpitty-chirp"! Something is slightly amiss on your Marin! Should be an easy fix.
Was very annoyed that day lol. Has been remedied . Thanks!!
I got this bike to get exercise. I’m worried I’m too heavy for the bike. I’m 6’4 250 pounds. The tires say like 95 kilos max. Am I too big for it?
Hey there, you will probably be just fine! Put the tires up close to the PSI max. not all the way, stay around 5 psi below the max, and just ride smart and with caution. Have fun with it!!
@@jdmtbcolorado yeah I actually found the weight limit and I believe it’s 350 pounds
How would you rate this area overall, favorite trail?
Sorry , just now seeing this. This trailhead is awesome, I drove 1 hour from home to get here but I'd say its definetly worth driving 2 hours. A great trail system with tech, and flow, and so easy to make it a full day of riding here. Super fun. Cucouy De Los Ceilos is my favorite
How are they called?
You enjoy that ? 😂
Man I felt so stupid 😂
Absolutely love the thrill your body gets from mb, keep up the great work and remember your only doing this for yourself and it’s fucking awesome!
Thanks man! Getting in a nice mtb ride is so good for the soul . And I really appreciate the kind words!

hey man i was sceptical at first about this bike, but when i saw how well it was performing i thought to myself i need that bike, so im gonna go get it tomorow. good video!!
Sweet man!! You’ll enjoy it!! Great bike to learn on but also a fun ripper!
❤
3x of these, there expensive but i used to run WORCS and they held up insanley well. never fogged, and don’t scratch near as easy as most.
Super excited to try these for park season. Almost went with smith squad chromapop but I’m a fan of the huge lens coverage and outriggers
@@jdmtbcolorado i havent heard of them!! yeah super wife FOV its awesome!!

I’m watching this and all I’m thinking is please don’t die please don’t die 🙏
I’m only focused on looking ahead and keeping my feet on the pedals 😂😅
I was hoping you gonna hit the squeeze. I still can’t ride the squeeze.
I’ve tried lol . Was a lot more doable back when 26ers and short wheelbases were in
I was sceptical of this video when I heard your price point, but I will admit you showed what could be done on a budget bike, and realistically it does what most people on this budget would expect. Well done!
Thanks! I tried to make it realistic. Somebody who only wants to spend 300-500$ to get into the sport is probably looking to get themselves on trails like these ones. I’ve definitely pushed this bike harder but wanted to show what is sustainable on this one
hell no im not making it down that wow
Being from western Colorado this is the type of terrain I had to learn how to mtb on lol
You should've seen the looks I got riding my 84 Mongoose ATB rigid, with canti brakes last summer. I ride it to get a little more workout on the shorter rides with my young daughter. It's also more fun on some trails than my full suspension. I now have a 2021 Vitus Nucleus, but honestly, rode my old ATB more last summer. My daughter and I crested a rooty climb (her on her 20" Hotrock, and my on my old rigid ATB) and a girl at the top was just telling her husband she needed a full suspension bike because she couldn't clear that same rooty climb. She felt a little sheepish after seeing us. He laughed his ass off as my little girl started giving her advice on climbing over roots. LOL I started out riding an old beat up 98 Trek hardtail alongside guys with $5000 bikes... I was usually buzzing their back tire on climbs. It flew down singletrack, and was light and nimble and I could flick it over rocks and roots. I'm absolutely not sold on 29ers. I just don't feel as at home on my Vitus as I did on my old 26" Gary Fisher Procaliber. Anyway... Got off on a little tangent. It's absolutely not about having the latest and greatest thing, and does not have to cost a lot to enjoy the trails. Get a solid, good quality bike, and go ride.
Exactly!! It’s just about getting something good quality. I ride my 130mm trail bike all summer at downhill parks so I’m used to a bit of Underbiking. I love feeling the trail!
Every time I watch these I feel like they’re gonna fall and it scares me 😭
I had decided that if I crash I crash but I survived lol
ngl i would feel pretty confident riding a rigid 26er through these conditions with some conti race kings or schwalbe rocket rons, maybe my threshold is higher though. just saying, i think the bar to entry for any sort of cycling should be very low and affordable.
I have definitely hit some stuff a bit more technical on this bike, however I thought it would be better to show some terrain like this as I figure people finding this video are looking to just get into the sport brand new. And yeah tires can make the world of difference
I am ride using United XC 73 (only cost 200$) which is a local product in here to biking through muddy track, it still hold in piece even after 9 years
Yes love to hear it!
I hope your channel will grow bigger so you can come to experience tropical rainforest trail
I put a Judy on mine and the front stays planted, it made a big difference in the corners. Thanks for showing what a GT can do
Thanks for watching! Definitely will be doing a new fork next
Can shred any bike!
Yep, waiting on new tires for the Rifty. So the cheap hardtail will have to do lol . Underbiking at its finest
Stickers.
Yes always gotta have some stickers on there
After a downhill competition once I found out my rear shocks were locked to whole time and found out my teammate did it to me before lol
Omg bro I’d be pissed
I hope your OK
Thank you! Yes I was alright. Just a few scars from getting scraped up and a concussion, definitely saved by the full face helmet 👍
Bro, that bike said mom look no brakes😂
Running Vittoria syerras on my hardtail. I put a Vittoria airliner in the rear tire and it does two noticable things and a few more subtle. #1 I got a flat at South mountain in Phoenix and was able to plug it and the tire failed a few miles out from the truck I was able to ride back because of the airliner. 2 really noticeable for me is I feel less fatigued on say a 13 mile ride compared to the soreness level without the liner. The subtle things are running slightly lower pressure there is no rolling and folding of the tire with the liner . Landing off drops and jumps is less jarring . I just took the rear tire off last night & cleaned the old sealant out recycling several ounces and reinstalled . I used 3 Pedro's tire levers, holding one with my body weight over my foot or knee while working the bead up with the other two levers. Windex was what I used to help the get the bead in the rim. I then aired it up, removed the valve core, put in 4oz sealant, replaced valve core , aired to 25 lbs. This morning it was at 20 because of a thorn hole, and a needle hole or sharp wire I removed while cleaning the tire.
I will definitely look into those
Good job, you've convinced me to ride Holy Cross!
Yes man go get it! I walked a few technical climbs because I’m just not there yet but there’s plenty of fun on that trail. Definitely challenging but a great ride
🙄
?
@@jdmtbcolorado was that supose to be like great or were you going to do something dope than changed your mind.. Or was that really all there is...
don’t see you doing any biking on your channel dawg
@@mikeprince7802man you dumb
BEFORE YOU TRY ANY BIGGER JUMPS YOU SHOULD GET A BUNNY
Push down on the bike with ur legs when ur front tire is mid ramp it will preload the bike to pop u up for more air. And lean back a bit to keep ur front tire up. And don't dead sailor (stiffen ur arms and legs) youll loose control and bike will left or right in the air. Be loose and be comfortable and confident
Okay will do. More and more reps on this ramp and it’s helping me be more comfortable instead of just freezing up in air
Epic ramp, you’re soaking up the jump with your arms and legs, try pumping/pushing into the start of the jump and “suck” your bike up to get more air. (Try to bend your knees and pull up into your body). You can also lean back a little to try and keep your tires level when hitting the landing
Thank you! Will do!
Hey great video! Try and pull up more and lean back more that way your front tire doesn’t hit the ground first, otherwise you’ll nosedive and go over the handle bars.
Awesome thank you! Yeah I’m going a little nose heavy and sometimes it sketched me out lol
Yo same bike! planning on getting the Rockshox Judy Silver TK on mine.
Sweet man! For a budget hardtail it’s pretty nice! Helped me get addicted to mtb lol
If you plan on actually using this for mountainbiking your first priorities should be brakes that will actually stop you - the cheapest Shiman MT200 will be far far better than the mechanicals you're running now. Also - that fork isn't actually rated for trail riding. Gravel roads and tarmac, sure - but not trails. It's a mountainbiked shaped object, not a mountainbike.
I agree I do think I want to do new brakes. That’ll probably be my next upgrade. But as far as the fork. Man idc , you can under bike, you can over bike, you can ride trails on a rigid frame and you can ride trails on an enduro. I’ve ridden this bike on plenty of tech at some decent speeds. I probably won’t get a new fork, I only use this bike 1/10 times I go ride .
@@jdmtbcolorado I’d much rather ride a rigid fork than a cheap suntour on the trails. They’re not that safe - when then fail, they do so unpredictably.
@@rasmusvedelI’m hitting greens and blues with 300ft of elevation change or less on this bike, I’m gonna be fine
Are road biked faster then gravel bikes?
Depends on what surface or trails your riding!
@@jdmtbcolorado aw yeah
@@floreschris5574 gravels are pretty versatile . I’ve seen some guys ride them pretty hard on mtb trails lol
very nice bike! maybe look into shimano cues linkglide 10 speed for a drivetrain that will last as long as the bike will.
Awesome I will look into thank you! Is it budget friendly?
Quite decent in the 10 speed variant. All you need is the shifter, derailleur and cassette, though you should consider a crank with only 1 chainring. I don't think cues is made for 3x. Should work with any chain.
Hello!Jd-stunning vlog-🤘
Hi do u still using the xfusion rear shock? Mine need to change but i need something not so expensive but reliable thanks
Yes I still use it! Works amazing for me!
So jealous... blew my knees out. Can't anymore.
Well especially with a crash I had in the summer I typically think of mountain biking being more dangerous but while I’m on my board I definitely can see possibilities for major injuries 😅
@jdmtbcolorado Oh, NOOOO!!! Sooooo, you must've had a very similar regiment to mine... MTB AAALL Summer to keep the legs - up, and the rest of the body - lean... so you would be tip-top for the 1st snow - to the last, every year and because if not, it's just too hard to bomb the hill all day without stopping and your only rest being on the lift to the top. Huh? I mean, we HAD to! It was always SO far a drive to the lifts to waste a single minute "resting"... right? Yeah, that was my deal... did it for about 8 or 10 seasons in a row. I didn't do any downhill MTB, perse, but mostly flat-land and climbs... gnarly ass climbs. I loved it! Then, one really sheisty day, hit about a 40' tabletop, overshot the landing, got off balance in the air and landed lock-legged. Hindsight... I should've just allowed the crash to happen but it just catches you off guard after so many successes and that's - that. Then, if that wasn't devastating enough, I got bad advice from some a-hole doctor who told me my injuries were irreparable. It wasn't until a pretty substantial re-re-re-re-re-injury that I visited a new doc, about another 10-years down the road, that I was told I should've had my surgery 10-years prior. ...SMH. I'm a grown man. Work hard AF. Heavy metal headbanger. You might confuse me for an evil biker guy.... I could've almost cried that day. Take care of those knees, friend. If it sounds like I might be right about you and I can offer any advice without tryna seem like a jerk, know-it-all, or something... at some point, I found that mountain HIKING was better training... like, straight-up climbing, damn near. You just don't really get the reward-blast of a high-speed decent, on foot. However, for me, I've found the descent hike is as important. Anyhow, glad to see guys enjoying the best & funnest sport ever created still! Bomb some hills for me, dude!
Yes man will do!! Taking things as safe as possible too!
Cheers to 2024 and congratulations on the proposal
Thank you! Best wishes for 2024!🎉
