How to Balance High Vibes and Deeper Emotions: An IFS Perspective
Welcome back to the channel! I'm Conor, and today I'm diving into a thoughtful question from one of you. Though the question was publicly posted, I'll keep the name private.
The question is about finding balance on "down days." How do we cheer ourselves up with positive affirmations or self-care without ignoring the parts of us that feel anxious, sad, or lonely? There's a part of the questioner that just wants to "raise their vibration" and avoid ruminating on negative feelings. But is this approach inadvertently keeping those feelings in exile?
In this video, I'll explore this from an Internal Family Systems (IFS) perspective. We'll look at the concept of Self-energy, the calm, curious, and compassionate state at the core of our being, and how it interacts with the various parts of our system. I'll discuss the balance between engaging with high-vibe parts that help us feel good and the importance of listening to and integrating the parts of us that are struggling.
It's not about choosing one side over the other but about understanding the value of both and finding harmony within. We'll also touch on the concept of polarization, where parts are at odds and need our Self-energy to mediate and bring them together.
Whether you're familiar with IFS or new to the model, this video offers insights into creating more peace and spaciousness in your internal world, allowing all parts to be seen, heard, and valued.

    I have at least a couple of parts whose overriding concern is to prevent me from feeling difficult emotions. I find them very difficult to access and communicate with. Numbing, dissociation. Any tips on how to be with them and help them relax?

    Thank you for posting this! I’ve had this thought in the past, but asking myself that question now, “is there any part that has reservations about our safety while doing this work” and no one spoke up. What a comforting feeling. I couldn’t say the same a few years ago.

    I have a question about when you're having a "down day"... how do we find a balance between cheering ourselves up (using tactics like positive affirmations, or self care to feel better) versus really listening to the parts who feel anxious/sad/lonely etc. For me there is a strong part that just wants to "raise my vibration" and feels it's pointless to ruminate. but am I just keeping those negative feelings in exile? thank you :)

    Whew...I'm sobbing and feeling it's a connecting sobbing. Thank you for this very thoughtful and sensitive meditation! It gave me the guidance I needed to get into that inner space where I can connect with my emotions and at the same time enough room to not get distracted by it. I can't say at the moment how it might have a long term effect but I could give me that physical and emotional touch I longed for for so long and later in my life forgot I long for (hope that makes sense)...because I kept telling my emotional being that no one can fill that void and give me what I didn't get enough as a child even if someone tried. So I tried to appease that part in me and the longing got less (or less present). Turns out someone can give me just that and that someone is me. Thank you.

    I'm listening to you and I suddenly start to cry when you talked about being kicked out of the tribe. I had a traumatic event happen to me which kicked me out of the tribe; my family and what they deemed worthy. I felt from that point on, when I was moving in my life's purpose, that I would be annihilated. I always jump to the worse case scenario, as tho it were true. But you just put it together for me by talking about the fear of death. Thank you so much. (I am enjoying your evolution here on CZcams. You are a gem.)

    I have tried IFS a few times with a lot of success. Parts show up and are extremely ready to share. This time, I went in curious about why I have this block. This time the part was steaming mad. Enraged really. It couldn't get past the anger. So I will probably attempt it again. I'm guessing that by showing compassion each time I drop in, it will eventually let me know specifics about what happened and why I can't seem to move forward..

    I get IFS, and I can resonate somewhat with the concept. However, I am missing something in trying to apply it. I'm not sure what it is, but I fo feel uncomfortable asking myself questions in my head as if I am talking to a different person. Ok, I feel silly. Maybe that's it, or I'm not smart enough to understand this modality.😊

    I’ll try n keep this brief - and be careful with the words n wording as I’m AWARE. FOR Me MYSELF - ‘I’m not sure ‘if - when ‘processing - i’m (my brain) is coming from [what we call] a dissociated/ fragment state or not 🤷🏻‍♂️🧐. Context: Lot of tr*uma - early - but we all Know it’s what happens INSIDE as a ‘result of what Had - Hadn’t - or and ‘what ‘Hasn’t happened *since. I’m not sure if I could get past the protectors ‘Survival - as felt senses , or ideas [managers are protectors too] let alone get to exiles. I need something like affirmation resonance. There is an awarenes though - sort of of the linear timeline. Context: Gaslit ( mental ab*se) for decades - which of course you don’t even Know that you don’t Even know. And it sucks.

    Hey, that’s really great to hear. Really loved this video! I’ve been mostly unsuccessful with my ability to talk to parts so this is great to hear. I’ve mapped out quite a few of of my part and I’ve managed to name them, and I’ve also been successful in getting to see how a couple of my protector parts are kind of causing this blankness (one I cal the Fog). They seem to be worried that I wont be able to handle repressed trauma memories so they make it so that I don’t end up in dialogue with my parts. Just before I came on here I had a bit of a breakthrough with talking to my parts. Your videos are really helping me, sir. Thank YOU!

    Such a good video. Thank you for making this. I can only watch 1 of your videos at a time because you always seem to activate parts in me and I get overwhelmed (in a good way). Talking to a part that did something I regret sounds really scary. I also acted in a blacked out state during this incident so how would I talk to a part I can’t remember the actions of?

    I've been doing your program and have been discovering so many amazing levels to myself. Naming exiles and protector/managers parts has been like putting humpty dumpty back together.
