For many women, motherhood is a strong, sometimes overwhelming desire. But how different is it for women living with HIV? This issue of Patient Voices is a companion piece to our recent eHIV review publication, Issues Facing Women Living with HIV, authored by Dr. Anna Powell from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
Our Patient Voices host is Justin Alves, a nurse and nurse educator at Boston Medical Center and one of our eHIV Review Program directors.
Our guest is Heather Rhea O'Connor, living with HIV and a mother of two. She's a former dancer and dance instructor and currently works as the program coordinator for the Reunion Project and a communication specialist for the National Working Positive Coalition. Heather is also a Community Advisory Board member for the Well Project and counsels women and birthing parents with an interest in breast and or chest feeding.

Cystic fibrosis does not meet the definition of an orphan disease. Orphan diseases are those that are so rare pharmaceutical companies don't make treatments because the expected revenue would be too small. The reason there isn't a pill patients can take to make all their symptoms go away is not due to apathy among the private sector but the fact that we don't yet have a treatment that can completely allow a normal life.
