That's a good question about the fashion. There were always some more flamboyant rock stars but in the 80s - there were a lot of white male singers that dressed more androgynous - Adam Ant, Boy George, etc.. most pop stars from England - but prince kinda made it more mainstream in black music, I think, That would've been in the early 80s. By 84/85 it was totally common, though our parents were probably still like.. what the hell? LOL. Shalamar - the group Charlie Murphy refers to - when he talks about Micki Free, had been around in various forms since 1977 - but I had some of their records in 1983 so yes, it was just more accepted by 1883/84- though I think in black music Prince probably pushed it into the mainstream.
