We Are All Doing Our Best - Jennifer Sanborn
MMC Board member Jennifer Sanborn shares a brand new song at our January 2024 Board meeting (yes, we sing at board meetings!). Read her reflection on the song early journey here: www.musicthatmakescommunity.org/we_are_all_doing_our_best.
We are all doing our best.
We are all doing our best,
With fears that are rising
and tempers are flying,
We are all doing our best.
We are all doing our best.
We are all doing our best.
Let's care for each other;
Be held by our mother;
We are all doing our best.
- Jennifer L. Sanborn and the Spirit of Song, 1/27/24

    The tune "Deirdre" used for this verse alone in the well-known hymn ("I bind unto myself today") is just as simple and (to my ear anyway) more beautiful. The traditional words are only slightly more complicated: Christ be with me, Christ within me Christ behind me, Christ before me Christ beside me, Christ to win me Christ to comfort and restore me Christ beneath me, Christ above me Christ in quiet, Christ in danger Christ in hearts of all that love me Christ in mouth of friend and stranger

    What is the source of this melody? It's not the original Shaker tune, and the text has been revised to remove Shaker theology.

    • @AlleghenyuuOrg
      @AlleghenyuuOrg Před 4 lety

      Ibadibam New tune by Daniel Schwandt (as Paul included in the introduction). Original lyrics as found at joanszymko.com, “Lay me low; Lay me low, low; Where Mother can find me; Where Mother can own me; Where Mother can bless me.” It sounds like aside from the altered theology, there’s the change from “own” to “hold.” Interesting.

    • @musicthatmakescommunity
      @musicthatmakescommunity Před 4 lety

      Friend, thank you for noticing this change and apologies for the delayed response. The melody is newly written by Daniel Schwandt, as noted below. We adapted the text slightly as the word 'own' (while I understand to be of Shaker origin) carries baggage that is painful for many, especially communities of color with direct connections to the American history of chattel slavery. I have now noted the text is adapted, and you remind me that sharing the reason for such changes matters deeply in the transmission of song. Context matters to this work and I hope you understand this as no disrespect to the Shaker tradition but a need to carefully recontextualize.

    It's based on a text from Sojourner Truth. Feel free to add verses to suit your topic, and post them here so we can all benefit. I'll start with anti-militarism verses: Trouble's been brewin' 10,000 years... Trouble keeps travelin' 'round the world... We'd rather buy guns than pay for food... We'd rather start wars than work for peace... We send the poor to fight and die... We're built for love, yet pay for hate... Thanks for posting this, Paul.
