      1980 was the first Olympics to use recorded music, so the transition from piano to recorded likely occurred sometime from 1977-1979.

    I prefer the routines they performed before the sprung floors- with less reliance on the tumble runs, the routines had more flow, artistry and musical interpretation. Nowadays the floor is more like one huge spring board; I prefer to see what a gymnast can do with the power of their own body- not a well sprung floor. That's what the vault is for.

  • @ScottMartinD
    @ScottMartinD Před 8 lety

    Artistry is so lacking in today's floor routines for women compared to the days of Olga & Nadia , I really believe they should consider removing it all together. The Olympics are athletic events. That's why you don't see the men doing dance moves (which could be quite extraordinary if you've ever watched ballet). Since the goal is no longer to enchant the audience with artistry/personality, then just remove it. Make it like the men's floor exercises. They're nearly there already. (Besides, we're so obsessed with equality these days, isn't it a bit sexist to force women to do something that men don't even have to worry about?)

    • @mariateresasatta
      @mariateresasatta Před 8 lety

      Isn't it a bit sexist to force women to do something according to what MEN have to do? :P But okay, if some skills are to be performed so badly, better to ban them. Just remove the word ARTISTIC from the discipline.

    People say things like: "I could have been an Olympic gymnast back then" and "7 year olds do this now." Gymnastics wasn't all about hard tricks back then; it was about doing the moves in perfect form. Also, those were women in their 20s and 30s doing floor routines on a wood or cement floor with just a rug on it, and the uneven bars were rigid. Sometimes the bars even fell apart during routines. The acrobatic stuff started in the 70s and evolved over time; each winner tries to beat the last one.
