Quick check-in! (No yard video this week, sorry!)
Cindy and I took a trip to New York City for a convention this week, so not a lot of time to work on editing and uploading videos. We still wanted to check-in and tell everyone it is ok to take a break sometimes. Be a human being! The summer is ending, and it is ok to take a break and recharge your batteries.

Our First trail

This is our first trail we cut in! We are very excited to have a little path we can walk through down in the property! It took a lot of work, and we have a lot of leftover trimmings to deal with, but we are making progress!
Thinning by the shed

On this day we decided to thin some shrubs and trees next to the shed. They have been encroaching on our area, and we needed to create some more space. We hate pulling up trees, so we tried to save some. The ground is very rocky and most of the tree roots are incredibly shallow, allowing me to pull them out by hand. Stairs to the Property - Installed

We finally got the steps down to the property completed! It took a lot of hard work and multiple days, but we got them installed. We are very happy with the way they look, and hope they kind of blend into nature. We have some minor finishing work to do, but the steps are functional and so much safer now than before.
A walk through our property

We realized that we never did a walk through video to show everyone the layout of our property. Well, here we are, less than a year in! We've already planted and landscaped a lot of the yard space. When we moved in, it was mostly grass and zero garden beds. The access to the lower level of the property was via a steep slope that caused several tumbles. Side Yard Update (Now with woodchips!)

Earlier this year we worked on cutting down some overgrown blackberries and huckleberries. Now that we have some space, we want to clean it up and make it ours. We planted some new flower and other shrubs to grow in here, hopefully promoting some more biodiversity and options for the birds around here.
Putting together and using our woodchipper

We bought a small woodchipper to help us clear a lot of the debris we cut down. Our property is overgrown with evergreen huckleberry bushes. So bad, that we need to use a chainsaw for a lot of the older growth. We got this woodchipper in the hopes that it will help us deal with a lot of the branches. It is small, and I did jam it twice, almost immediately, but I think I have it figured out.
Stairs to Property - The beginning

Our property has a pretty steep slope in the back. We have been slipping and sliding to get down there. One of our biggest plans is to build in some steps to get down. It is a lot of work, but it will create a much safer path for us. We were able to get it about two thirds complete this day. The front of the steps is made from fallen trees on the property. Clearing near shed

We decided to clear some space by the shed. We have this little forested patch between our property and the neighbor's, but it has become unhealthy and full of dead trees and bushes. We need to thin out some of the dead and dying brush. This is just the start. The day was windy causing the camera to fall over, and I was careless with some sticks, knocking it over again. Oops! Cleaning Up Around the Greenhouse

After installing the greenhouse, we needed to clean up the brush around it. This took some time, but overall a decent days work. We also found a birds nest with some little eggs. Once we found it, we tried to avoid that area and not disturb it. The mamma bird came back and laid on her eggs, so we hope everything was ok!
Fireplace Install

Replacing our old fireplace with a new one. The old fireplace was "ventless" but our new one actually vents outside. My stepfather helped me tremendously on this project, and I couldn't have done it without his help. He showed me a lot of tricks and taught me a lot over the course of this project. Cleaning up behind the shed

We took a little bit of time to clear some weeds and lay some paper down behind the shed, then layered on some hog fuel. A pretty simple task this time, and its good to celebrate the simple ones when we get them!

How long did it take to do all of that?
@@AnitaBarrett-g4x all in all, this portion probably took a solid 6 hours. Lots of trimming and limbing. Plus we still have a lot of the trimmings to either put down the woodchipper or burn in the fall.

Aww thanks! Cardboard won’t be a permanent solution, but the weed fabric seems to fail anyway!
