What tuning is this
I was blessed to see the Coltrane quartet on his birthday 1966, in SF at the Jazz Workshop. Included Sanders, Alvin Jones, Alice, Jimmy Garrison and guest Thelonius Monk. I was expecting Tyner, but was impressed with Alice, who looked very cool back then.
A lucky man indeed to have seen such a performance live. I saw Bob Marley in a small club about 10 years later in Boston; couldn't get any of my friends to see Marley, who became immensely popular after his death; only Elvis was more popular in terms of post-death record sales. Alice was a very good musician, and i am confident that Miles & Coltrane's records will be even more popular 100 years from now compared today, which is about 50 years after. Franz Liszt almost went bankrupt guaranteeing a statue to Beethoven in Vienna. Turned out nobody wanted to contribute a nickel at that time, because Beethoven hadn't become the superstar he is today. Vienna pretends like they always like him; not true. Abstraction takes a long time to absorb. But people in the know always eventually warm up to Coltrane. Myself, i hate the crazy Ascension period. So i have some ways to go.
