Everyone who saw her couldn't help but notice her movie star-like appearance. But behind her online allure, there was a sadness in her eyes that her followers couldn’t see. Behind her smiles and photos, Shonni carried a secret. She used social media to find brief moments of happiness away from the chaos of her home life. Her parents were separated, and the constant conflict between her mother and father weighed heavily on her. Amidst the turmoil, she sought solace in chatting with strangers online. One of these strangers was Jay. One day, Shonni received a message from Jay, a 19-year-old boy who greeted her with a simple "hi." Jay had fair skin, slightly slanted eyes, and a good physique. Only half of his face could be seen in his photos-it seemed like he was hiding something too. At first, Shonni ignored him, but when she returned to the chat, she saw Jay’s message again. She replied with a simple "hello," and from there, their conversation began. Their conversations quickly grew deeper. Jay was a shy guy, but as their chats continued, they became more comfortable with each other. Jay called her "Ate" (an honorific for an older sister in Filipino) because Shonni was four years older, and Shonni fondly nicknamed Jay "Dong" (a term of endearment for a younger boy). With each passing day, their chats became more thrilling and heartwarming. Shonni often sang for Jay during their video calls. Her favorite song was "The Only Exception," and she frequently sang it for Jay. With every line, Jay could feel the depth of Shonni’s emotions, even though he had yet to see her fully. As time passed, Jay fell in love with Shonni. He became enchanted by every photo she posted-only half of her face, her beautiful eyes, her fair and smooth skin. Slowly, Jay wasn’t just attracted to her but had genuinely fallen for her. However, Shonni knew she was hiding something. While she was the person in the photos, she wasn’t biologically female. She feared Jay would find out the truth, but she couldn’t stop their conversations either. The day came when Jay wanted to meet Shonni in person. Shonni kept refusing, saying she was busy or giving other excuses. But deep down, she was afraid Jay would see her true self. However, Jay was persistent; he continued to ask until Shonni thought of using her friend. She invited her friend to pretend to be the Shonni from the photos. The day of their meeting arrived. Jay came to Shonni’s school with flowers and a big smile on his face. He immediately spotted Shonni’s female friend waiting for him. Jay approached her, gave her the flowers, and smiled sweetly. Shonni watched everything from a distance, and with every second of their meeting, her heart pounded. She felt envious, regretted her deceit, and above all, felt hurt. During Jay and Shonni’s friend's dinner, Jay sensed something different about the woman in front of him. She wasn’t the Shonni he had come to know in their chats-she wasn’t as playful, as sweet, and something seemed missing. Jay was puzzled, but he didn’t think too deeply about it at first. However, after that night, he noticed that Shonni wasn’t as active in chatting as before. Jay started to have doubts, but he didn’t know how to express them. Days passed, and Shonni could no longer bear the pain of her lies. She had fallen in love with Jay and knew she couldn’t hide the truth forever. So, she decided to come clean with Jay. One night, she messaged Jay and told him they needed to meet. They met at the park where they had first connected online. When Jay saw Shonni, he was shocked. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” Jay asked, his voice clearly filled with pain and confusion. Shonni, crying, explained that she was afraid Jay would leave her once he knew the truth. "I'm still the same person," Shonni said through her tears. "I’m the one in the photos, but I’m not biologically female. I’m transgender." Jay saw the pain in Shonni’s eyes. It was hard to accept the truth, but he also saw Shonni’s sincerity and regret. He didn’t know what to say. He turned away and started walking, while Shonni was left in the park, sobbing. As she walked away, Shonni didn’t notice an approaching car. A loud crash echoed, and Shonni fell onto the road, bleeding. Jay, who hadn’t gotten far, heard the noise and saw Shonni. He immediately ran back, cradling Shonni, crying, desperately trying to wake her up. At the hospital, while Shonni was being treated, Jay found a box of letters and photos meant for him. He read each one, and with every letter, he felt the true emotions of Shonni-the pain, the love, the regret. Jay never expected Shonni's feelings for him to be this deep. Shonni woke up in the hospital, not knowing what had happened or why she was there. As she stared at the ceiling, a familiar yet unrecognizable face approached her. The man was crying, holding her hand, his eyes a mix of joy and sorrow. "You are...?" Shonni asked, confused, unable to identify the man in front of her. Tears started to fall from the man's eyes. “I’m Jay,” he replied, his voice trembling. “I’m the one you’ve been talking to all this time… the one who fell in love with you. The one who always called you Ate, and you called Dong…” But there was no sign of recognition in Shonni’s eyes. Her expression remained blank. Here, in front of the one he loved who couldn’t remember him, Jay asked himself: Is there still hope for their love to return, or is this the end of their story?
