"55 miles per hour" doesn't really work here, historically. There are ads for the Pennsylvania Turnpike in the 1940s, and they were like "you have to slow down to 90 for the turns." Then again, I'm not sure how much they exaggerated, if at all. But Homer Hickam Jr. took his Dad' Buick out to go 100 MPH in the later 1950s, so you'd think that maybe 88 isn't completely unachievable in 1955.
