Fixing the Kalos Gym Leaders
Today I'm going to be taking a look at the Kalos Gym Leaders in Pokemon X and Y and attempt to fix them by changing up their Pokemon, movesets, abilities, and items!
If you reach the end of the video, let me know what you think about my changes and if you'd do anything differently! Thanks for watching and thanks to my channel members for your support!

I really like the angle of the Mega not being the ace/anchor
I enjoyed watching this just as much as I did Mikey’s video on the same subject. You put some serious thought into this, and I agree with most of your points. Korrina’s Gym team in particular needed a lot of help, and you actually had similar ideas to what I would have done. The only differences were that I proposed giving Mienfoo U-Turn, rather than Baton Pass (so he can damage Psychic-Types), and I considered giving Hawlucha a Sitrus Berry and Acrobatics. But looking back on it, that’s probably TOO strong for the third Gym. We don’t need the fury of another Platinum Fantina, right? 😅
I like to think if Giovani had clodsire in his life, he wouldn’t be such a bad guy
Honestly of all the Pokémon regions Kalos and Alola are my favorites. I don’t remember the gym leaders very well but I’d like to point out a couple of things about the teams reimagined here. Firstly most of them seem reliant on tactics that taunt can all too easily disarm or stat lowering moves that Inkay and later Malamar can easily turn agnaist them. Secondly as far as the level cap that can be circumvented by either hyper training (which was introduced in x and y and which the maker of this video seems to have forgotten about) and/or the battle chateau and the training opportunities that presents. Thirdly one can get access to riolu super early in the game and use hyper training to buff its stats right away and get lucario well before Korrina gives you one. Then one can trade for a steelix just before Grant which steamrolls not just him but Valerie and wulfric too. In fact between lucario and steelix one could make the case that a starter Pokemon isn’t necessary. Just my 2 cents
How are they getting those 9 gen sprites
People have made them custom
Intelligent lizard psychic?
Sceptile is a Christmas tree ice typing
I do not see ice at all there even tho he may have a tree
I feel like while weird, sceptile should have the fighting type. It's got blades on its hands!
I could be totally off on this but I imagine the reason teams only have three moves per mon is due to the AI being less abusable if they have less options
That’s fair honestly
I used to be so confused on why dabrina had venomoth but now that i think about it, it shows that because bugs were a throw away type we tended to use them as a totally different type. Like butterfree we always attach psychic and megadrain on.
I would have preferred luxray as clemont ace bc it is his ace on the anime🥲
Luxray is not in X and Y
i cant wait for the paldea video, their gym leaders are SO lame
Not bad pic for magneton i would rather gave clemont a magnezone with eletroball and iron defense for mirror shot to get out but not bad pic
The motivation behind many Generation 5 Pokémon is "Generation 1, but Urban instead of Wild". Dugtrio is now Excadrill, a drill. Muk is now Garbordor, a trashbag. Raticate is now Watchog, with a Yellow Vest. And so on. I think it would have been a good wink to replace with the corresponding Pokémon whenever it is possible (for example Scrafty, Bisharp, Escavalier, Accelgor... are their own things). It doesn't change much the team, but there the idea: *Cilan, Chili & Cress:* _Eevee and Jolteon, Flareon and Vaporeon._ Requires Cilan to be Electric-type. I wish I could have picked Electabuzz, Magmar and Jynx instead but doesn't work as type advantage. In my headcanon, Simisage, -sear and -pour were inspired by Eeveelution and the "Punching" trio (Energetic Simisage looks like Electabuzz, Smug Simisear to Magmar, and Feminine Simipour to Jynx). But man... it wouldn't work in the game at all. *Nemora:* _Meowth and Raticate_ Just to keep the cohesion, I put Raticate last for Watchog (easy fight then...) Herdier seems to be based on Growlithe, but it is a Fire-type. So I picked a cat. *Burgh:* _Beedrill, Paras and Scyther_ In my headcanon, Leavanny and Scolipede were inspired by a mix of Butterfree line + Scyther, and Beedril line + Pinsir respectively. To be honest, it would make sense a cocoon hatch into a mantis or a centipede. *Elisa:* _Pikachu, Pikachu and Electrode._ Zebstrika is based on Rapidash. To retain the speed, Electrode seems the most appropriate. *Clay:* _Marowak, Dugtrio and Nidoking._ Excadrill is a mole as Dugtrio, but looks like Palpitoad. Excadrill is such an improvement over Dugtrio. Palpitoad is based and Poliwhirl, but isn't Ground-type. Krokorok is based on a beta-version of "Crocky" which didn't made the game. So I end up picking by look alike. The deadly Marowak can fit the dark Krokorok, the simple Dugtrio can fit the goofy Palpitoad, and the kaijuesque Nidoking can fit the charismatic Excadrill. *Skyla:* _Golbat, Pidgeot and Aerodactyl._ Gyarados covers the typing, but seems to be Eelektross in the game, and doesn't look like a bird. Swanna... doesn't seem to be inspired by a Gen1 or later game at all (maybe Feebas/Milotic, justifying Gyarados then). So any Pokémon is good. *Brycen:* _Dewgong or Smogo, Jynx and Cloyster._ This is tough. Beartic seems to be inspired by Ursaring, which is Normal-type (and from Generation 2). Vanillish is Smogo, oddly (crazy, right?), but isn't Ice-type. Cryogonal isn't based on an early Pokémon that I know. So, the picks were weird. *Drayden and Iris:* _Dragonair, Gyarados and Dragonite._ I don't think any of those Pokémon are inspired by early Pokémon, or took inspiration from any (apart maybe Gabite's line?). Lapras or Aerodactyl are good pick, but are not in the Dragon Egg group. I could have pick Charizard, Arbok or Seadra too, but Gyarados is too iconic.
Why are you giving Meganium the dragon type. Like I get it, it’s a dinosaur. But it’s much more peaceful and nice than angry monster. So like others I would give it the fairy type.
There are other dragon types that are peaceful, take Goodra, Drampa, Alolan Exeggutor for example
The only things I'd argue are Meganium, Sceptile and Rillaboom, the logic given does track fairly well. Meganium is partly from a point of dragon still being treated as incredibly rare in gen2 and partly said big flower being pink, otherwise yes its dragon or fairy for it. For Sceptile there's a dinosaur that was found and it looks incredibly similar to Sceptile and it would be weird for mega evolving to change its secondary type and not the other 2's (though you could instead change those 2 into fire/flying and water/fighting respectively). Rillaboom is a simple one, its drum is used by planting it into the ground and its more gentle personality lending it to being part Ground.
Steelix for Luvdisc is kinda based honestly. Not just getting Steelix, but it can be a lil poetic with it's defensiveness being akin to "Walls" that he gives up/takes down for Luvdisc the love/heart pokemon.
That’s a fun explanation of it
need that rom hack
On the Jasmine section if a player tries to hit skarmory with a rock move on a turn it isnt roosting it still wont be supereffective lmao
Troo
You can't change Will's Jynx and Slowbro, because then the connection to Lorelei is lost!
Why does he have to have a connection to Lorelei?
@@OKreations It's a classic theory that they are the same person
I'd do: Will: Xatu (or Girafarig?), Exeggcutor, Jynx, Slowbro, Xatu Koga: Weezing, Forretress (Scizor in rematch), Muk, Venomoth, Crobat Bruno: Machoke (or Tauros?), Onix (NOT Steelix), Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Machamp Karen: Umbreon, Murkrow, Bellossom (instead of Vileplume) (or Kingler?), Gengar, Houndoom Lance: Dragonite, Aerodactyl, Dragonair (or Steelix?), Charizard, Gyarados, Dragonite
I would give every leader three mons, and make these battles 3v3: Chuck: Tyrogue/Hitmontop, Primeape, Poliwrath Jasmine: Magnemite, Magneton, Steelix Pryce: Seel, Dewgong, Piloswine Claire: Seadra, Dragonair, Kingdra
I feel like the three starters would be 3 starters that dont have megas receiving new megas and then maybe also getting either the kanto or hoenn to choose from like in the original you get for free
So MY theory would be Mega-Meganium/Serperior (idk I don’t think Grookey will be picked 🤷🏻 like Rillaboom is already very good) being either Grass/Fairy-Dragon, Mega-Empoleon/Feraligatr/Inteleon Water/Steel (Armor/Jaws/or Sniper motif depending), Mega Emboar/Infernape/Cinderace being Fire/Fighting punchy guys
I would give every leader three mons: Falkner: Pidgey, Pidgey, Pidgeotto Bugsy: Kakuna, Metapod, Scyther Whitney: Clefairy, Doduo, Miltank Morty: Gastly, Haunter, Gengar (I'd rather give Snubbull/Granbull to Morty rather than to Whitney, and instead of giving him a Stantler)
I think the original teams are perfect as is, but I really think they should have six Pokémon each... The Pokémon I'd add to each Elite Four member would be: I would give Lorelei a second Jynx; I'd give Bruno a Poliwrath, or maybe even a Pinsir (and keep the two Onixes); I would give Agatha a Ninetales, and keep the rest as is; and I'd give Lance a Seadra (especially in gen 1, with it's better stats), and keep the rest as is. Blue would of course stay as he is.
Kid namd u turn
What
@@OKreations I misspelled named. Meganium is now 4x to bug moves. So the correct comment would be “Kid named u turn”
fyi the ai for knock off is extremely dumb so an itemless honedge still sweeps korrina bc knock off has like -10 ai priority on itemless targets
The 2d sprite of Avalugg looks better than the 3d model by a mile. 👍🏼
Are you going after the Kalos Elite Four and Champion as well? 😂
You already know it
I think Karen having a Tyranitar as her ace could have an interesting tie in to her philosophy. Larvitar is weak and can be difficult to train up, but she sticks with it because it’s her favorite. In the end, her pokemon only becomes “strong” because she loved it
I think it's very unlikely that we'd get Kalosian Gen 1 starter evolutions - they're already a part of the Kalos Dex as the Prof gives you a choice of one of them when you first arrive in Lumiose City. And their Mega Evolutions were introduced here. So that means the native Kalos evolution of Charmeleon is Charizard as it has appeared since Gen I. If they aren't giving the final forms the Regional variant treatment a la Hisui, then I think Gen I is far more likely a choice. But I actually think they're going to stay with the 6 starters from X & Y - the 3 Gen I and the 3 Gen VI, and maybe give us an alternate Mega Evolution for Venasaur and Blastoise a la Charizard, and finally give Mega Evolutions to the 3 Kalos starters.
Falkner is paying for the sins... of himself in GSC where him just spamming Mud-Slap (which not only lowers your accuarcy, not only deals damage, but also is supereffective against most popular starter) made that version of him one of the hardest first gym leaders ever. Like seriously, signature move that deals damage and makes you miss is exactly the way to kill any desire to play pokemon again among young kids just picking up those games.
I feel like you could have gotten away with having another Pokémon on each team holding an item, mainly because the mega stones seem like a must have considering its the main mechanic
3:26 Drowzee is very clearly based on an animal called a Tapir. They basically look like pigs with trunks, and many species have that two-tone coloration that Drowzee does.
only one i disagree with are cinderace and rillaboom. Cinderace would've been looking really good with an electric type, and rillaboom i would've associated it more with ground rather than normal.
Swap Serperior and Meganium and it'll be perfect
Giving Meganium the dragon type would be the nail in the coffin for Typhlosion. 4x weak to water? Not being able to fight back to either dark or water? 4x resisted by Meganium? and resist ground as well?
So
I believe gym's 7 and 8 deserve at least 5 Pokemon, and preferably 6.
I understand but I disagree, I think giving the final gym leader more pokemon than an elite 4 member doesn’t make sense
@@OKreations The Elite Four need to be balanced around there being, well, five fights back to back. Gym Leaders do not need to be. Does it work well lore wise? No. But gameplay is always more important than what, in the end, would be fairly minor lore discrepancies.
Fair enough, I just don’t think it needs to be that difficult
Typhloshion - Fire/Ground Meganium - Grass/Fairy Feraligator - Water/Dark No comparison It should only be this
16:51 i think rotom wash would be better because that’s a bigger threat and would work with rain dance
Fair!
I think that Valorie should not have mega mawile but Wikstrom should have had it instead because if you account for huge power it has a base attack stat of effectively 259
Yeah fair enough, I think I should’ve given it weaker base power moves to over come that
Karen "It just happens to be that my favourite is a pseudolegendary"
Yupppp😂
Omaster makes no sense here lol
Idk I think it makes a decent amount of sense given aero on Lance
@@OKreations Aerodactyl is a draconic Pokemon. Even a man in pewter city calls it a dragon. Omaster is just not remotely close to that theme.
I understand, I just like how Lance is more air based and Clair is more sea based, I think it’s a stretch don’t get me wrong, but like there isn’t much else for other options here
@@OKreations There's literally Lapras there
That Clemont team hits
Hi
Hi
Bro this is your least viewed video
Okay thanks
*My ideal Kalos Gym Leaders & Elite 4 Teams:* - Viola: Surskit, Spewpa & Vivillon - Grant: Carbink, Amaura & Tyrunt - Korrina: Pancham, Hawlucha & Lucario - Ramos: Jumpluff, Trevenant & Gogoat - Clemont: Dedenne, Magneton, Luxray & Heliolisk - Valerie: Aromatisse, Sylveon, Florges & Mega Mawile - Olympia: Malamar, Meowstic (Male), Meowstic (Female) & Mega Alakazam - Wulfric: Cloyster, Avalugg, Froslass, & Mega Abomasnow - Siebold: Barbaracle, Pelipper, Lanturn, Clawitzer & Mega Blastoise - Malva: Torkoal, Pyroar (Female), Chandelure, Talonflame & Mega Houndoom - Wikstrom: Klefki, Probopass, Bronzong, Aegislash & Mega Scizor - Drasna: Dragalge, Goodra, Noivern, Druddigon & Mega Altaria - Diantha: Diggersby, Gourgeist, Slurpuff, Aurorus, Pangoro & Mega Gardevoir This would mean that every Gen VI line beside the starters, Furfrou and the legendaries would be used in one of the teams. Furfrou is kept out because of it's too low of a BST for Diantha, overlapsing with Diggersby and because grooming is a mechanic being featured within Lumiose City itself.
the worse is trade evolution for sure
A starter will hardly have a dragon type in the firsr generations, bc dragons have the strongest moves, advantages and etc. So, they will not.
Says you
