    But parliamentary is the international style of debate. but the good side is we do need a piece less aggressive style, policy is useless. People throwing facts at a situation as fast as they can isn't truly useful. Which is what policy is. LD on the other hand is the most useful for competition because it couples persuasive speaking with a fact based system.

  • @icekicker14
    @icekicker14 Před 15 lety

    No, it's National style, done in Canada specfically for the Canadian championships. 8min 8min 8min 8min 4min rebuttal 4min rebuttal While Americans believe that "their style" of debate is better, the showing on the worlds stage begs to differ. Canada regularly breaks top 6 whereas Team USA...never breaks. National style allows for a lot of personal style, if you look at Tim Abdullah and Iqbal Kassam they are great examples.

  • @elrifle24
    @elrifle24 Před 15 lety

    and the most important thing is that these kids would get harassed if they went into to a policy debate round. whereas this would be extremely easy for a policy debater to walk in to and succeed. hqve you guys ever seen american policy debate?

  • @elrifle24
    @elrifle24 Před 15 lety

    this type of debate is too easy. it isnt even close to the structure of american policy debate. plus policy debate is much more aggressive, and more like a full fleged argument then this, it also allows debaters to step out of the realm of traditional policy making and allows us to critique any aspect of debate.. this is just 4 high school kids role playing as canadian politicians, and there isnt room for individuality like in policy debate in this

  • @ChristianTarsney
    @ChristianTarsney Před 15 lety

    round to their advantage, which I don't think is anything that has to be euphemized about--it's part of debate, and if it's something no one in an entire country can do, then debate in that country kinda sorta sucks. Also, if you actually want a legitimate test of styles, come down to Glenbrooks or Greenhill where the judges don't drop people for how they debate and instead listen to and vote on arguments (slow or fast) and see how y'all do.

  • @ChristianTarsney
    @ChristianTarsney Před 15 lety

    Aaannddd ask yourself when was the last time a top-twenty American debater, either LD or policy, showed up for an "international competition" or even thought about taking one seriously. The debaters who do go don't debate anything like their normal style, because the judging is such shit that two thirds of the judges would drop them just as a matter of ideological, stylistic hackery if they tried to. And you're right, American debaters (well, a few, anyway) are good at preclusion and framing the

  • @ChristianTarsney
    @ChristianTarsney Před 15 lety

    Trust me, it's possible to speak quite a bit faster than that and still be perfectly comprehensible. Obviously "debate is more than speed reading," but speed is still a big part of good debate.

  • @ChristianTarsney
    @ChristianTarsney Před 15 lety

    Crappy/nonexistent argumentation, displaced by obviously contrived, horribly stilted attempts at persuasive appeal, delivered at a mind-numbingly slow pace without any serious attempt at strategic case construction, frameworking, preclusion, etc? Watch any of the NDT or TOC (LD or policy) videos online from the last four or five years by way of contrast and it'll be pretty obvious what I mean.

    Actually Canadian Debate is made of win. American debate is sooo stupid. It is a debate of models, not actual ideals. There is a reason why Canadian wins at worlds, and Nor Ams, Pan Ams, Europeans, and spawn the best debaters the worlds has seen. American debate sucks.
