This incredible instrument deserves to be better known
Can you write anything of any meaning in just 5 minutes? Particularly for an instrument you've never experienced before. That's what Zoë Marlew and myself tested in this episode when we met up with Mantawoman (aka Reylon Yount) who plays the Chinese Hammered Dulcimer called the Yangqin. And we had a lot of fun!

Ludovico Einaudi is a composer I’ve always struggled to get along with. But he’s one of the most popular classical composers alive today. In this video I challenge myself to get to know his music better and see if I can come to some kind of understanding as to what it is I’m missing that so many other people enjoy in it. What is Classical Vaporwave?

Vaporwave is a form of electronic music and internet culture that emerged in the 2010s. It generally involves stealing old tracks and slowing them down to create something weirdly nostalgic. So making a classical version it seems like a strange thing to do - but that's why I did, with the help of Daniel Hope and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra. The concept of intellectual property is flawed by nature to begin with. Ideas are not eligible to qualify as property since they are not rare resources, it also makes it impossible to steal an idea. In fact, ironically enough, the only way one could steal an idea is through the copyright system.

I think one of the weirdest orchestration goof I've committed was writing an alto recorder a member of a quintet I was in. Come practice day, it turned out that what he had told me was an alto recorder was actually a tenor. Luckily, this was easily fixed.

That said, there's loads of classical music post-Rite of Spring that draws huge audiences including Ravel, Strauss, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Vaughan Williams, Bartok, Messiaen, even Schoenberg. It's surely just the most contemporary avant-garde composers who have lost widespread popular appeal. And most of them seem to have forgotten what the point is.

Everything correct. It sounds complicated because you use descriptive concepts of Western music to describe Flamenco. The typical Flamenco musician wouldn't even know what you are talking about. It is like trying to describe the French language but only use German words and German grammar doing it.

Maybe what almost all "composers" are putting on paper is not worthy to be relevant, or remembered. Anyway, in the era of DEI you can forget about honesty in the arts, let alone relevancy. You won't be relevant no matter what, if you don't fit the DEI template. Not even Beethoven would be relevant in our superficial, skin-deep society.

Shostakovich of course, Prokofiev, all time great favorite, Franz Liszt, he kicks Mozarts ass and love the voluntary Virtuoso goal, achievement achieved! Like Yngwie Malmsteen I’m your face, or their faces haha. Cool AF

“The idea that to enjoy classical music you have to be afraid of your own body” Mozart literally wrote a song called “lick my ass” that is 100 times dirty than anything said in the Cardi B song WAP. People gotta stop pretending that sing about cocks and ass is somehow a new thing. I can show you Roman era poetry about butt sex, it’s not some new fad- human beings have always and will always find sex and genitals and asses to be hilarious (because they are).

I lost respect for Andreyev when he compared some very short pieces by Webern (ugly, pointless) with Beethoven's Bagatelles. He also fails to grasp that by the end of the 19th century Germany was no longer the epicentre of classical music... the baton had passed to Sibelius, Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky...
