Walking The Wainwrights - Gavel Fell, Blake Fell & Burnbank Fell - Lake District
Wainwrights are the 214 English peaks (known locally as fells) described in Alfred Wainwright's seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells (1955-66). They all lie within the boundary of the Lake District National Park in Cumbria, and all but one (Castle Crag) are over 1,000 feet (304.8 m) in height.
Summiting all of the Wainwrights is a popular form of peak bagging in the Lake District.
This is a short video when I summited (bagged) Gavel Fell, Blake Fell & Burnbank Fell.

Cnoc Vecto review and comparison with Sawyer water pouch
Hi liked and subbed. You've done some of the same things as me. I want to do this one soon, we did pen y Ghent on the Pennine way a few weeks ago but the 3 peaks is yet to come. I look forward to following your adventures.
Thanks for your comments, I'm currently trying to decide next years adventure.
Great walk Paul, did you see Waylands Smithy, about a mile and a half before Uffington?
A great series of videos. I’m planning on walking The Ridgeway next year in reverse as I’m planning continue from Avebury down to Stonehenge and then across to Glastonbury.
thanks for your comment. I hope you enjoy your hike and I'm glad you liked my videos.
What is the app you are using (Maps )
It's the Ordnance Survey app
Well done Paul. I appreciated your water trick at a animal stop.
If you wish to know if water is off the mains just put your finger over the tap and see if you can stop it .if it’s off the main s you will not be able to stop it
Hi Paul - water isn't a challenge. There are taps along the way, you just need to know where they are
sorry for the slow reply. I tried to find as much information as possible before I started as to the whereabouts of any water sources but I didn't find much. That's why I tried to show where I found water.
@@PaulWillcocks well done Paul and thanks
Well done lad. Good watch that. Hope you gave yer feet a good soak along with a nice cold well deserved Guinness afterwards! 💪🏻
Your flying to bristol from newcastle!??? Seriously?? I didn’t even know that was possible!??😂
'My pack is a bit heavy because i'm carrying 8 days food'....good grief....I know this vid is 4 years old but, for anyone thinking of visiting the Outer Hebrides, please be aware that THEY HAVE SHOPS.
Hi David, thanks for your comment. Like you say this video is 4 years old and there might well be more shops on the islands now but when I hiked the Hebridean Way shops were very scarce on the actual route. A couple of time I left the route to visit a shop but only to find that the shop closed a 12 midday and I arrived at the shop at 12:30 which was annoying. Also any provisions that I was able to purchase from a shop was not hiker friendly, like canned foods. Have you hiked the Hebridean Way recently?
I have just bought a load of new kit, and was wondering. Did you take both the microfleece and the puffy jacket? I seen you packed the puffy, but not the fleece. Thanks in advance
Yes I did take both. I wore the fleece most days at some point, you can see me wearing it in most of my WHW videos.
Real nice piece of is driving. We're doing this tomorrow by motorcycle. Can't wait.
U weren’t wrong about the eco campsite. Ridiculously over priced.
At Laggan locks. Where u said u thought the cafe was is the wild camping spots. For about 8 tents.
thanks for the info.
Did it today but agree never again!
Thanks Paul, looks fantastic. What sort of temperatures were you getting there in May? All the best, Andy 😁
From what I remember its was probably around 10-12 C which for me is nice to hike in. Most of the time I only had my rain coat on to protect me from the wind, and the wind can be very strong.
@@PaulWillcocks Thanks Paul, sounds perfect 😁
I am enjoying watching the videos. You would have just missed a part of the wall at Heddon on the Wall, just before the Hadrian's Way rejoins closer to the course of the wall itself.
Good series Paul. I'll be walking the Ridgeway in May 2023. Thanks for tips with the water 👍
Hi Paul great video can I just ask was it easy to navigate Ive heard people say the trail is not well signed how did you find it?
In places it isn't very well signed. Every trail I hike I always have my GPS with OS maps and the route preloaded.
Great series , loved it ..i've just bought the Os maps after seeing this..... question though....i can only save my route as a .GPX file.. how do you save it as a video file ,? , also my fly though appears foggy , how to rid myself of this ?
Thanks for your comment but I'm a little confused by your questions, I will try to answer anyway. When you download a file for the OS app it will be a .GPX file. My map fly though section of this video was recorded on my computer and I think to stop the foggy look it could be either your internet connection speed or the graphics rendering power of your computer that is lacking. Hope this helps.
@@PaulWillcocks thanks muchly for the reply Paul , just can’t figure out how to record the fly through as a video file .. my laptop is a top end gaming machine .
@@ThirdDegreeWitchExplores OK now I understand your question. If your laptop is powered with an Nvidia Geforce GPU then you can use their software to record the fly though
@@PaulWillcocks it is … I think I’ve found a way of getting it to work , thanks for the hints Paul , much appreciated .. planning on the Ridgeway yet again in the summer and wanted to copy your idea ;) .
One of the best places on the planet
Dear sir when is your next video?
Well done. I I the YTP twice this year in superb weather conditions (in June Solo, then again in September with my husband). Will be doing it again next year. Fantastic views! Love this challenge. I was lucky as I had clear views, sunny weather but not too hot both times.
Hi can you tell me what app that was thank you for the video
Thanks for your comment, the app is called British Hills in the play store, I don't know if it's available on iphones. You have also reminded me that I've got more videos to upload.
I know this video was 2 years ago but I did this last year and the 'eco campsite' is atrocious, your lucky you didn't meet the owner, he is awful...I was threatened by him and his 'boys' because I asked for water before I ordered coffee or cake...sat at table with my friend who arrived before me and was threatened with assault by the staff over water. Place and people are a disgrace
Wow Paul many thanks for the great video what size is the drybag for your sleeping bag I've been struggling to fit my gear into a 68 litre rucksack these tips will make such a huge difference. Very much appreciated Keep up the good work brother
How hard is this compared to the 3 peaks challenge, anyone, thanks, also is it pretty easy to follow Paul, would I need a map and compass? well done on completion 👍🏻👍🏻
If you are referring to the national 3 peak challenge then this is easier, I used OS maps on my phone to navigate and although it's fairly easy to find your way I would definitely recommend using something GPS or map and compass.
@@PaulWillcocks thanks Paul, appreciate your reply 👍🏻
Hi Paul hope you well im doing hadrians wall in a week or so whats the campsites like with prices im just working out my budget . Hope you enjoyed the trail im doing this one then next will be the coast to coast . Next year im on to Scotland West highland way first then the big one cape wrath . Hope to hear from you from dave in sheffield
Hi Dave, I can't remember the prices for the campsites but I did put a link to them in the relevant videos. Hope you have a nice hike and that the weather is ok. I've posted videos of my Coast to Coast and West Highland Way hikes if you're interested but I'm yet to hike the Cape Wrath trail.
Ear plugs…. Boots wax ear plugs.
There once was a Hebridean way fish she called herself m Trish she walked on the water placed her order and that was the way of the Hebridean way fish
I’ve just completed my great Glen way quest I popped into that echo campsite for a break but nobody was there! I think this quest would be better going north to south
A great first day, looking forward to the rest 😁
Hi mate, I’d really be very careful with your comments on that campsite. It may be best to remove this and your last video, heard of a few cases of businesses taking people to court etc.
Oooh I’m considering going to do this very soon. I will attempt this 12 hour voyage
Thats an excellent shout on your sleeping bag! I did something similar wity my tent and it brought the size down dramatically
I have tried to get the same dry bags that you use. I can get dry bags but not as flimsy as urs. (Flimsy may not be the best word, but you know what I mean). Where can I get them from? Thanks
I think this is where I got mine. ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/fold-drybag-ul/
Hi Paul, thank you for your videos. I did the coast to coast a couple of years ago, pre-Covid, and I found your videos very useful for my walk. I live in Australia but plan to be back to do Hadrians wall sometime in the next couple of years. Once again I really enjoy your talks and find them very useful so thank you so much!
Paul, more great video's of one of my favorite locals, though I only hiked there once. Got into you channel through your C2C videos, and studied all before my wonderful adventure there. Do you use a gimbal for filming?
I'm glad you like my videos. No I don't use a gimbal just a Gopro Hero 8
Cut your fingernails that’s appalling 😂
How many main meals did you take 🤔 or is it possible to get food along the way 🤔
I can't remember but I think it was 3 main meals. There isn't many places to buy food along the way, I remember seeing a cafe at one of the lochs but it was close when I got there. At Fort Augustus there lots of cafes.
Ah I recall this splendid walk. It reminds me of a cool summer in the year 1764. It was warm.
Hi Paul this video is brilliant I’m off to do it again on Friday trying to follow the guidance here to keep things simple.
I once lingered at Deirdre Barlow here from coronation street one grey October morn sir
Brilliant , a touch of comedy too.Well done with the extra Pennygwent peak! You did well, congratulations
Thank you so much 😀
Hi Paul, lovely watch, very informative as always, thank you. Can you advise where you stayed in Fort William the night before you started please and if they had parking to leave the car? Thanks in advance.
Hi Jamie. I hiked the West Highland Way first and stayed in a hotel in Fort William for two nights before starting the Great Glen Way. The hotel was on the high street and was called Ossian's Hotel. I don't think it has parking.
I’m off early April to do it again, this really is a good setup to work to go keep things light.
I've hiked the WHW twice now and I will probably hike it again someday.
@@PaulWillcocks got a long walk planned this season?
@@DJVOutdoors yes but I'm not ready to announce it quite yet
@@PaulWillcocks the C2C is one to do again my quest was completed last September I didn’t get any rain.
Hi I am doing this on the 28th of May any advise would be great full.
Hi Russell, i would advise making sure you have a good level of fitness, don't over pack your rucksack with unnecessary items (keep the weight down) and when you stop for a break don't sit around too long.
The Lake District is lacking in trees because there are to many sheep. Rewild ASAP. Thanks fro the video.
My name is fruit bat bill please send pic
?
Great series of videos. If you had to schedule the days and camps again is there any differences you would make ie in 5 or 6 days in total . If so where would you camp ?
Good question. my 2017 WHW hike took me 7 days and my 2020 WHW hike took me 5 days. If I was going to hike it again which I probably will one day I think I would go for 6 days as hiking the entire length of Loch Lomond in one day was hard going on my 2020 hike. As for where to camp it really is hard to say. There are lots of wild camp places along the Way.
I don’t believe I viewed you 2020 WHW Nike video, is it available on you channel page
@@scottrussell6326 no sorry. I filmed the hike but never got around to editing and uploading it.
