How to Install 3M Window Film Insulation (Ecobob.co.nz)
The following is a short video on how you can insulate your home with ease. Perfect for renters or those on a budget. INSTRUCTIONS BELOW!
Windows allow for sunlight, which can heat your home, but they are also terrible insulators as heat escapes through windows making for cold living environments.
DIY double glazing at home can remedy this heat loss, and its easy and cheap to achieve. Watch the video, and follow the instructions below, you’ll be warm and cosy in next to no time.
You’ll need the following:
Heat Shrink Plastic Wrap (Available in different sizes)
Measuring tape
Hair Dryer
Double Sided Tape (We recommend you buy an extra roll of tape as we ran out when doing our windows)
Scissors
Spoon
Cloth and window cleaner
How to install the film insulation step by step:
1. Clean the window frame, and the window itself. Some people suggest cleaning the frame with alcohol.
2. Next, measure the window for the plastic sheet.
3. Cut the plastic sheet to the size of the window and add 5cm to both the width and length. This is to ensure an adequate fit on the window frame, you will cut off the excess sheet later.
4. Place double sided tape around the window frame, press firmly to help it stick.
5. Then, take the backing off the double sided tape.
6. Attach the plastic film to the window FRAME, not the glass itself. Restick and stretch to get the film evenly distributed.
7. Gently run the back of a spoon over the taped areas to ensure that the plastic sheet and the sticky tape have bonded sufficiently.
8. Now use a hair dryer to gently blow warm air over the widow, thereby eliminating creases and curves in the plastic. It should appear smooth like glass.
9. Finally, take your scissors and carefully cut away any excess plastic on the window frame.
And that, is, it.
Within a few minutes you have double glazed your window, ensuring minimal heat loss, and maximum warmth.
Repeat this process on any number of windows in your household, paying particular attention to the rooms you spend most of your time in.

    Is the plastic a special plastic for insulation or what?

    I’m having a problem lately with the mould on the wall spreading from the moisturized window due to the temperature difference of inside and outside😢 will this insulating layer work enough for this problem?

    • @MsRScienceClassK12
      @MsRScienceClassK12 Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, the moisture on the window is causing the mold. Get rid of the water with insulation and likely the mold will stop actively growing. You will have to use bleach to get ride of mold spores left behind.

    Love your video. Took the fear away of having to do this myself. I used to have the Amazing Austrian Gentleman do these things for me. Some of my windows still have the 3M plastic on them. But alas some windows need another go. I’m wiping water more that twice a day. From the inside! Of course! The plastic on it prevents the condensation. Thank you. Great video all the way round.

    To everyone who is having trouble with the backing coming off the tape. The tape is too cold, if it starts separating, warm it with a heat strip gun as you peel it. Works like a charm.

      I recommend to using 3M scotch magic tape, and One day later use Hair Dryer. 1 layer is double sided tape, 2 layer shrink film, Trim all excess film, then 3 Magic Tape. place Magic tape half on the shrink film sides and other half must be on the window. With this way you can support the shrink film and also have smoother edges.

      We have not a thermal camera and also not tested. But i recommend. For instance our windows 2 layer of glass. It's have one gap of air. After applying this film we have 3 layer and additional larger air gap. This air gap insulate the outer and inner temperature.

    • @ivojara
      @ivojara Před rokem

      What provides the insulation is the air in the gap between the film and the glass. It works like a double pane window.

    • @newfone4678

      Before applying this film we had problem with the Window Condensation every morning in the winter. We had to wipe moisture with towel. But now we didn't notice the Window Condensation. So it's works definitely. Because the film doesn't cold easly as glass. If you touch the film you can feel warmth in the winter. Like winter season, you can feel less hot in the summer.

    • @Redberryfarm888
      @Redberryfarm888 Před 2 lety

      @@xanamoth1769 yes... but I have found that it also can (usually) pull up paint or varnish of the window trim, depending on where it is put on. ( Try around the outside edge of window trim next to the wall...) Leaving it in place to try and reuse again doesn't stick as well, plus gets gummy during the hotter summer months. For me, my curtains cover our window trim that looks a bit ratty from the years of using tape on it, but it is SO worth having the warmth and no condensation/rotting windows during the snow season, hands down.

      It's not the thickness of the film but the pocket of air in between that stops thermal leak, I thought the same thing but it works amazing, especially for the price.
