WH Auden reads "The More Loving One"
blogaboutpoetry.wordpress.com
A reading of "The More Loving One" by WH Auden.
The poem in full:
Looking up at the stars, I know quite well
That, for all they care, I can go to hell,
But on earth indifference is the least
We have to dread from man or beast. How should we like it were stars to burn
With a passion for us we could not return?
If equal affection cannot be,
Let the more loving one be me.
Admirer as I think I am
Of stars that do not give a damn,
I cannot, now I see them, say
I missed one terribly all day.
Were all stars to disappear or die,
I should learn to look at an empty sky
And feel its total darkness sublime,
Though this might take me a little time.

blogaboutpoetry.wordpress.com A reading of "Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night" by Dylan Thomas. The poem in full: Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the ...

Do not go gentle into that good night, Old age should burn and rave at close of day; Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Though wise men at their end know dark is right, Because their words had forked no lightning they Do not go gentle into that good night. Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight, And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way, Do not go gentle into that good night. Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay, Rage, rage against the dying of the light. And you, my father, there on the sad height, Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray. Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light

How fucking old was he 4 this recording, did we need his voice crackle and falter like a really old man's? Once u get to there it's too late to rage, thus it would make more sense that a person reciting this still has some life and fight in them. That being said, Michael Sheen did it worse, he started it off like a wuss

I love this poem and have heard it read by many marvelous actors. However I do not think I have heard it read as well as the poet himself reads it. Obviously he knows his work well. He truly "feels" it. We are also blessed to have a poet who has such a beautifully resonant voice.

This poem is packed with emotions. It is read as if he is firm on his perspective (estar versus ser) of, in my opinion, being with his wife Caitlin. I was told yesterday they had many discrepancies about his and her behavior. In other words, though they were married, they may have disliked the concept of it. I was told he did not return to her and he chose to drink several times over again, of course, tiredness came over. He ended up dead, in a tent, I was told. The entanglement of anger and frustration between individuals in this marriage is poetic and problematic. A good example of how the drink can affect our marriages.

Ephesians 6:12 New King James Version 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against (A)principalities, against powers, against (B)the rulers of [a]the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. 2 Samuel 14:17 New King James Version Your maidservant said, ‘The word of my lord the king will now be comforting; for as the angel of God, so is my lord the king in discerning good and evil. And may the LORD your God be with you.’ ” Exodus 20:13 New King James Version 13 “You shall not murder. Romans 6:10 New King James Version For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Romans 4:4 New King James Version 4 Now to him who works, the wages are not counted as grace but as debt. Psalm 57:6 NKJV They have prepared a net for my steps; My soul is bowed down; They have dug a pit before me; Into the midst of it they themselves have fallen. Selah Psalm 56:5-7 NKJV 5 All day they twist my words; All their thoughts are against me for evil. 6 They gather together, They hide, they mark my steps, When they lie in wait for my life. 7 Shall they escape by iniquity? In anger cast down the peoples, O God! Revelation 16:6-7 For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, And You have given them blood to drink. For it is their just due.” 7 And I heard another from the altar saying, “Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are Your judgments.” Matthew 24:7 New King James Version 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places. Isaiah 24 New King James Version Impending Judgment on the Earth 24 Behold, the Lord makes the earth empty and makes it waste, Distorts its surface And scatters abroad its inhabitants. 2 And it shall be: As with the people, so with the priest; As with the servant, so with his master; As with the maid, so with her mistress; As with the buyer, so with the seller; As with the lender, so with the borrower; As with the creditor, so with the debtor. 3 The land shall be entirely emptied and utterly plundered, For the Lord has spoken this word. 4 The earth mourns and fades away, The world languishes and fades away; The haughty people of the earth languish. 5 The earth is also defiled under its inhabitants, Because they have transgressed the laws, Changed the ordinance, Broken the everlasting covenant. 6 Therefore the curse has devoured the earth, And those who dwell in it are desolate. Therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, And few men are left. 7 The new wine fails, the vine languishes, All the merry-hearted sigh. 8 The mirth of the tambourine ceases, The noise of the jubilant ends, The joy of the harp ceases.
