This is the first video in the filigree series. You need to make a form of some sort. It can be hand built or wheel thrown. Your design should have balance between positive and negative spaces, and make sure there is enough connective clay that your form does not fall apart. Make sure your planning sheet is complete BEFORE you start your clay work.

This is the second video in the series of the filigree assignment. Once you have your design, use your needle tool to transfer the design and then cut out your empty negative spaces with an Xacto knife. This video took me approximately 40 min to make.

This video was created for kids who already did a lidded jar. This is an assignment that they can do to supplement the lidded jar. It requires the same measuring skills/knowledge but it is applied in a more advanced way. This technique opens up a whole new range of possibilities for form and height.

How to Trim with a Chuck

In this video I demonstrate how to trim using a chuck. A chuck is used to trim work with a thin neck and small opening. These two aspects make it difficult to attach the work to the wheel head. There for one can rest t the work in a chuck and then the rim of the chuck supports the work so that it is not damaged during the trimming process.

Slip Trailing

In this video I specifically demonstrate slip trailing. This is the technique of using slip to form decorations on the surface of a ceramic work. This could be done on a thrown pottery form or a hand build sculpture. This technique falls under the category of surface treatment and can be used for decoration of the pitcher assignment in level 2.

In this video I review and demonstrate some new surface treatment ideas for my level 2 students. The new ideas here are making your own texture items with a hot glue gun, slip trailing, stamping, and fluting. For the pitcher project students are required to invest in the surface treatment of their pottery. We also discuss working off the idea of a circle.

In this video I demonstrate how to make three different types of spouts for the pitcher project for my level 2 ceramics class. Students can choose any style of spout, hopefully the one that best creates unity and balance in their work. Throwing a 7 inch Tall Cylinder

In this video I review how to center and pull the walls of a cylinder for my level 2 ceramic students. I add a few more steps in to this cylinder video meant as tricks for throwing a taller cylinder. I want students to try throwing with 2 lbs. of clay so that they can get the clay higher. I also want to encourage students to get the clay out of the bottom of the walls.
