Great Power Rivalry Over Africa
As Russia and China strive to expand their reach and influence in Africa, America faces mounting challenges in the region, including in Niger, where it has begun to withdraw its forces stationed at an airbase near Agadez-an installation that cost $100 million to construct.
On June 13, the Center for the National Interest hosted two experts to assess the great power rivalry that has developed in the region and its implications for U.S. national security.
-Mark P. Lagon is Chief Policy Officer at Friends of the Global Fight Against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and former Ambassador-at-Large and Director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons.
-J. Peter Pham is a Distinguished Fellow at the Atlantic Council and former U.S. Special Envoy for the Sahel Region.
Jacob Heilbrunn, the editor of The National Interest, moderated the discussion.

zhlédnutí 287Před 21 dnem
Following the death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash earlier in May, Iran is preparing for an election on June 28 to choose a successor. This choice could have implications for the succession to Iran's 85-year-old Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, given that Raisi was considered a contender for that role. Who are potential candidates to succeed Raisi, and what coul...
Perspectives on Central Asian Hydrocarbons, Pipelines, and Transit Corridors

Central Asia is rich in hydrocarbons and, in principle, can send them in all directions. Demand signals come from the East, South, and the West. How much additional supply can come from the region? What are the most likely pipelines and transit corridors to be built and developed in the coming decade? On May 30, the Center for the National Interest hosted the fourth in a monthly series of exper...

Russia’s Global Energy Role: War, Sanctions, and the Energy Transition
zhlédnutí 422Před 2 měsíci
The United States and its allies have imposed wide-ranging financial and technological sanctions on Russia’s energy sector in an effort to impose high costs and to stall or slow new energy projects-all in the hopes that this would apply political pressure to the Kremlin to end President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine. These sanctions, and Russia’s adaptation to them, are changing Russia’s role...
The Gulf States and Central Asia: Converging Foreign Policies?

Gulf state activity in Central Asia has steadily increased in recent years. This turn of events comes as a very welcome development for Central Asian states, offering them another direction for their various multi-vector foreign policies and, in par...
GOP Opposition to Ukraine Aid (w/ Curt Mills)

In a pivotal moment amidst Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. Senate passed a $60 billion aid package for Kyiv in a 79-to-18 vote Tuesday night. What explains the growing indifference, if not outright hostility, to Ukraine aid in the Republican Party? In this epis...

Also had a consistent political track record, unlike some calls it a dictatorship, never the less it brought a stability to Singapore for foreign capital to be invested.

Wow, I must say this is evidence that people in DC know a lot of useless information yet ignore common sense and the nature of humans. You guys are all sitting there weaving straw-man arguments and obsessing over ideology when in reality, ideology isn't the core of peoples' political values. Ideology is something people use as an excuse in order to cope with the world they live in and their own powerlessness in society. The idea that a president would be driven by ideology or that any given ideology can be imprinted on anyone is a foolish trap that know-it-alls like to believe. Same sort of reasoning drives people to invest in an investment that's clearly in a bubble. The fact is that Trump and Biden don't care about ideology. Biden wants to control the bourgeoisie class and Trump wants to go down in history as a man who saved America from a predictable decline. Both men will say or do anything they can to meet those ends because that's what drives them. Biden and Trump both believe that the ideology of the American people is worthless intellectual gymnastics people perform in order to deal with their daily life. If you want to know why Trump became president and may become president again(though I doubt it), its because the rest of the Republican party gave up in 2016. A party surrendered without a fight to a political party that was full of arrogant bourgeois elitists and mentally ill losers. That scared people considering that they were the target of both those groups and the party that claimed to care about them threw up the white flag. Ideology means nothing. The average Democrat may claim to care about women but they won't lift a finger to stop the epidemic of forced abortion and abuse. They claim to care about Ukraine but would forget about the nation within a month if it lost the war tomorrow. They claim to care about the poor innocent illegal immigrants yet literally fight hard to make sure that stuff like the pimping of literal children never gets impeded. Of course, they want to make sure their bourgeois husbands are getting laid by people who don't have STDs and can't use the legal system and pregnancy to infringe on their social class. The Democratic party is the party of sex-pest men. Biden knew this which is why he was saying that he wanted to legalize forced abortion during the 2020 campaign. That's the filth the Republican party surrendered to. Quit obsessing about ideology and quit building strawmen from kits you delivered to you free-of-charge from whatever worthless media of your choice you keep trusting. That viewpoint of the world is just a fantasy. Grow up and get out of DC. Quit whining about Trump. Even if he was the evil man you claim he is, he wouldn't have the power to do any harm. Presidents are restrained by congress, frivilous lawsuits, threats of overthrow, et cetera. Seriously grow up you manchildren.

Obama did start the war in Ukraine. I’m from the United States and have watched our news media mislead the American people about the war in Ukraine. When Obama was president he had the CIA remove the Ukraine president and replaced with an actor. Later Obama with the help of the FBI, CIA General Milley and the news media replaced president Trrump with Biden. Obama had to replace Trump with Biden so he could get the a war going not only in Ukraine but also a war against Israel. Biden is Obama puppet. Obama hates the western countries and most of all Israel. Obama, Biden and Hillary are supported by Iran and China.

Yet another bad take. Russia suspects Ukraine and the US because for the past 2 years, the terrorist threat to Russia has not come from ISIS, it has come from Ukraine with the assassination of several civilians by the SBU. Not to mention that little incident with Israeli passangers in the Caucasus, caused by the SBU using Telegram, as well. Besides, if the US knew about the attack, one has to wonder how. That's why all this reflects badly on the US

I do not claim to be an expert on Kissinger, but with that being said, I’ve done massive amounts of research into him. Gewen’s attempt to soften the vitriol waged against the deep finger prints Kissinger left after raping entire nations (and really the world) many times over, leaves me speechless. Gewen is acting more like a lawyer, than a researcher. He is playing devil’s advocate to himself, and offering defenses for both sides of the public’s perceptions (which are largely uninformed) of Kissinger. In my opinion, Gewen shows signs that he fell for Kissinger’s sociopathic and charismatic justifications one too many times, and in his dogged attempt to be unbiased, he forgot that there are indeed lines that should *never* be crossed… and Kissinger crossed virtually all of them.
