20th June: WWDC, Streaming vs Music, and Chinese keyboards
Private Cloud Compute: A new frontier for AI privacy in the cloud
security.apple.com
Depending on who you speak with and how much attention they actually paid to the event, WWDC was either one of the best or worst events Apple has ever done. Personally, I was excited by a lot of the user and developer-facing announcements and can't wait to try them. Among all the announcements was this detailed post on how Apple intends to keep its new AI cloud services private and secure. It is a fascinating insight from a company that isn't typically so forthcoming with details.
Smartphones May Affect Sleepbut Not Because of Blue Light
wired.com
For years, I, like many others, have tried to reduce screen time before bed due to it and the infamous "blue light" effect on my sleep. It turns out that many of the reports we based this belief on were not as accurate as we maybe thought and that, as always, "it depends".

Musicians outraged as Spotify CEO claims the "cost of creating content" is "close to zero" : "Our albums took hundreds of hours of human effort hard work and creativity"
musicradar.com
As a sometime professional musician from the pre-streaming times, no streaming service is exactly great for musicians, but Spotify, ever since they created the idea, have always had disdain for artists, and I refuse to use them. Well, the latest news from the company has not changed my opinion.

The Forgotten History of Chinese Keyboards
spectrum.ieee.org
Anyone who regularly follows me knows that I love computing history. But most of what I know has a Western bias, and I have also always had a side fascination with different keyboard layouts, especially those that don't use Latin characters. Unsurprisingly, one of the largest nations in the world has quite a history of its own keyboard layout.

    ChatGPT 4o (and possibly earlier ones) can actually create copy-pasteable Inform 7 code from just a description. I asked it to make a text adventure version of Myst, and it was able to give me a sample game that had the same concept (right from the dock with the misty sea and the boat)... It wasn't complete by any means but it was there. And it can debug its own code if you paste in the Inform compiler errors.

    HTML is sufficient to implement a very simple structure like that of the Choose Your Adventure books. Markdown is a more recently developed alternative used in various applications (the Obsidian “note taking” app being one I’ve used). For a sophisticated system a la classic Infocom, Level 9 and Magnetic Scrolls, the main two established tools are Inform 7 and TADS 3. Inform 7 is geared more to people coming from the writer’s mind; the program source code itself is about as thoroughly natural language as you can get (with all the advantages and disadvantages that come with the approach). TADS 3 is geared more to the programmer’s point of view, resembling languages such as C++ and Java. The seminal 1990s CD-ROM game _Myst_ was originally implemented in HyperCard, a MacIntosh-only rapid development platform that was very accessible to tyros. There have been a number of more recent attempts to release something akin to HyperCard, but I’m not aware of anything quite hitting the mark and still getting development support. Scratch, an MIT release especially intended for children, might be worth a look even by older beginners. The basic concept is one of “visual programming” by putting together interlocking blocks representing ‘boilerplate’ code, with gadgets for adjusting the parameters for your particular situation.

  • @philliphessel6788
    @philliphessel6788 Před 3 měsíci

    The paper format actually originated with the Tunnels & Trolls solos, starting with _Buffalo Castle_ in 1976. The limitations of that medium relative to digital programs were less significant when personal computers were more expensive, less powerful and less portable. “Not strictly interactive fiction but kind of” seems a bizarre way to speak of the medium to which the IF term was first applied, and in reference to which it finds most common usage. Colossal Cave Adventure debuted on minicomputer systems, and (broken up into three parts) as Zork for micros was the foundation for Infocom’s IF enterprise. The abbreviated title Adventure (used for the Scott Adams products with a less sophisticated parser) gave rise to the basically synonymous genre name for computer IF - “adventure games” - which outlived the commercial viability of the text-oriented form. That form is the focus of the annual Interactive Fiction Competition, which has featured among other significant works some to which peculiarities of the medium itself (and sometimes subverting conventions) are important artistic elements.

    • @ChrisChinchillaWatch
      @ChrisChinchillaWatch Před 3 měsíci

      Yes, that is true. I actually even own a copy of a reprint of the Tunnels and Trolls book with one of the solo adventures. I guess I meant more than to outsiders (which I get the impression you're not); they think of interactive fiction in the digital form. Also, to be honest, filming and showing books on video is hard! But as someone who is currently rereading the Lone Wolf books and as this video has been popular, a roundup of originally physical examples could be interesting… So would how people actually made and made them, though I guess the tools would be less consistent. Personally, I am also more likely to make a more traditional print-based one as it requires less technical ability.

    Hi Chris. You have been looking for a way to insert existing folders into an adoc-Studio project. You can do this with a referencing project. This is a project type that exists precisely for this purpose. To create such a project, hold down the option key and go to the main menu. The item "New Referencing Project" now appears under File -> New. You can then simply drag and drop folders into the project. They are not copied but referenced.
