VAN CAMPING - FALL TRIP
Our fall campout. Cruised around some backroads, and a lot of dirt roads. The leaves were past peak, all the tourists were further south and east. Felt like we had the whole area to ourselves.

      That's an AC duct out of the later Vanagons. I hollowed one out and made it into a head knocker for storage. Sunglasses, stickers, registration, binoculars, small glove box stuff. This does not have AC in it as it was an 82 diesel. The early diesels did not offer AC, even had a sticker saying no ac in an orange warning label on the T-belt cover. Likely due to their already low output of 48hp. This now having the TDI could be converted over for sure but I won't be going to that extent. Totally doable though so if you were considering doing that in your conversion it is totally an option. Good write-ups over at the samba and Vanagon owners too if for when the time comes.

    • @van_demonium
      @van_demonium Před 8 měsíci

      I do not keep any. Folks can keep them here though. There are very few regulations when it comes to bass. I am also not a fan of eating fish but lots of people around here eat the bass, black crappie and such, so I personally just toss them back. There are also trout, and salmon around here too. They have a season and limits. The trout stocking here though is mostly a consumables program, vs restorative. I just fish for the fun of it. I might keep some in the future however for fertilization purposes.

    It will be nice when they finally pave the trail and make it safer and more inclusive. Right now, it is not a family-friendly trail and excludes older citizens and the handicapped. It is downright unsafe at some points.

    • @van_demonium
      @van_demonium Před rokem

      I am a bit torn. I agree about the lack of access for the older, the handicapped and it being beneficial for their access and safety but the place is loaded with families. This immediate region is blessed with many paved options like The Bruce Freeman, The Narrow Gauge, and The Minuteman Bikeway, right in this general area. I do enjoy the unpaved nature, but agree it is a mess. There is a whole section that often muck by the Concord end and semi submerged in the swamp it cuts through. The S turn in the trees near the farm is often the site of collisions, and the heartwell stretch is usually rutted up from that farm and utility equipment access. The only thing I worry about with the paving is the general over crowding we see on the other sections mentioned, as well as the speeds some of the bikes will be carrying. It also increases the functionality for commuters. Which I admit is a good thing but will also increase the population of people carrying a higher speed. So where paving it does increase access. We may be trading one safety issue for another.

    • @van_demonium
      @van_demonium Před 2 lety

      A long asked question with a really varying answer. So these two bikes on this day preformed pretty much the same and used about the same amount of fuel. However my bike is beat (the 110) and his is a bit nicer shape (the ct90) and likely better compression too. If both bikes were new or comparable condition, the 110 has a slightly better pull and top speed. They still use about the same amount of fuel and range. However it could vary greater in different regions or altitudes and even over greater distances of travel and of corse rider weight. I wouldn't really say buy one over the other. If someone who is new to the CT and looking to get into one. Get something in decent shape and it will do the job.

      I don't disagree about the class rating. Take the two bigger ones out, and it be a class II. However if you look at the standardized scale of ratings, It is stated that a rapid with vertical drop or ledge over 4ft, is considered class IV. No denying that this run is easy, I just also didn't create the scale or requirements. If the Smith up the road is easier and yet a class IV maybe we should start there.

    • @cheskybaba4864
      @cheskybaba4864 Před 2 lety

      @@van_demonium True - Punch Brook Falls looks like a fun 4 if that wood was gone to make it runnable. I always see rapids as something long and sustained and shorter rapids (like PB Falls there ) as a feature. So I would agree it's a class two with a couple of class 4 features. It should be included on the AW site. Does it have a USGS gauge on it?

    • @van_demonium
      @van_demonium Před 2 lety

      @@cheskybaba4864 It is undeniably pushing the - side of that IV- rating. It is a bit steeper than it appears in the vid. It is not the "steep" by any means, but on the topo/gps you can see it does drop 180+ feet in 1.75 miles. It is continuous, fast flowing, a bit manky, and a swim could easily lead to injury or entrapment. The river right sections below PB Falls not shown here is sieved out pretty badly. We would need the wood out of the lead in, to get over there to show it. It is also worth mentioning that this run, is at it's lowest runnable level. We do look to remove the wood, mend the current land issue and show some more runs at high water. This run is only a couple miles from the Franklin whitewater park. It will be a great addition to the growing whitewater community.
