How a Bluetooth device allowed a paralyzed man to walk again
A group of researchers (Lorach et al.) recently published a study showing technology that allowed a paraplegic man to walk again using only his thoughts. It's called a brain-spine interface and has 3 parts: something that reads the brain waves (electrocorticography implant), a computer that decodes the brain signals into useable information, and a spinal implant that stimulates the nerves responsible for walking. What's crazy is that the computer uses Bluetooth to communicate with the spinal implant.
And interesting side note, the spinal implant is a repurposed deep brain stimulator used for patients with Parkinson's disease!

How a CT scan sees inside of you in 3D
zhlédnutí 14KPřed rokem
Computed tomography, or CTs, changed the way medicine is done. Nowadays, this "donut of truth" is used to diagnose diseases, perform image-guided procedures, and even allows us to create 3D models of your insides. So how does it do this? Here we explore reconstruction algorithms in CT in a (hopefully) easy to understand way. Specifically, we break down the science behind filtered backprojection...
What would happen if you didn’t have a patella?

This video explores the various machines in our body that provide mechanical advantage - namely, levers, pulleys and gears. The joints in our body act like levers providing either greater power or range of motion. Sesamoid bones like the patella act as pulleys, providing a gliding surface for the patella tendon during knee movements but also changing the direction of the force so that it’s more...

Wifi or Bluetooth…?!?! Not an option for me. Can’t pay the bill…? Well, you can’t walk. It could be a device that you pay for all at once… but everything else is too much. Electricity if it needs plugged in. Maybe a “service provider” to charge $50+ activation fee every time you miss a payment… I get penalties, but businesses and corporations push the limit and beyond.

I once had the opportunity of discussing the high jump with Dick Fosbury. He knew of my intense obsession with the Russian school of the jump. He simply stated to me, "I simply use increased momentum in the approach as Valeriy Brumel did with my backward bar clearance method. I had no interest or time to learn the Russian techniques." He was a really gracious elite athlete!

Well, yesterday sudden shivers at work for 2 hours, then got back home, fever of 102, all over body aches and incredible muscle weakness. I said I’d ride it out. My fever usually last 6-7 hours straight and then I sweat , and all sorts of things come out of my nose. Yesterday within 3-4 hours, fever was 104.7, slurred speech, repeated words unconsciously, dizzy, extremely weak. Ok, took Tukol & Advil, did cold compress with cold water/ vinegar, took 1.5 hours for the fever to go down to 100. Fell asleep for 9 hours straight. Today I woke up w/o sweat, I wasn’t out of the woods because I broke the fever with pills and pharma liquids … dang!! Also, I fasted the whole day and franc mineral water by the gallon

I'd say the burden on medical providers on, provide, a treatment is too engrained on our culture. Yes, you should definitively go see a doc if you're worried, but for some viral diseases like a cold or flu in healthy individuals, the best cure is time, hydration, rest and diet. Let your immune system do its work while you lay comfortably in your bed watching whatever you want.

For Capgras syndrome: this one fascinates me. I wonder if extraordinarily long times between visits with family and close friends can cause some of these delusions, or the doctors/helpers aren't hearing the whole story because it's a long-term trauma or dramatic change impacting the person coming for the help. Under Cotard syndrome: TBI patients can suffer from this due to seizures as a symptom, if the seizures can't be controlled or altogether removed by medicine. I have not ever been told I had it, but I have known a lot of peers who suffer from it.

Maybe olympic sprinters have other biomechanical features that go with medium sized calves that help them. But growing up generally the most explosive athletes for starting/stopping in every direction have stronger calves. The RB on the football team, the crazy fast soccer or tennis player, etc. all have huge calves.

Interesting thank you. However when you give the temperature at which a fever becomes dangerous and should be treated, you don't mention children or infants. As far as I know, this threshold is lower for young babies than for adults? - at least that's what I was always told as a new parent. This would be a pretty important thing to mention, if you're telling people not to treat fevers in general.
