      It sounds like you had a winding short out and fail in the motor. Id start by taking it apart and doing a visual inspection of everything. Then get an ohm meter and measure out the resistance across the windings and lets see where you are at.

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 Před 18 dny

      Damn that's too bad! That's why I always advocate for revarnishing these things when you have them apart to service them! Helps extend motor life and sometimes can prevent them from going poof! Chances are you are seeing motors meant for modern attic fans which are only a single speed instead of 2 and they also have the wrong size shaft. Your best bet is probably to find a parts fan, especially if you can find another McGraw Edison or one of their many rebadges because then the motor will be a direct fit. Most box fans used a 1/2" shaft so finding one with a 3/8" like these used is a little difficult. Good Luck!

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 Před 27 dny

      I don't have a tachometer so measure the exact speed but it's only turning a couple hundred RPM max. I wouldn't use a hit and miss to run a generator because the speed isn't consistent so the voltage would spike and droop constantly. If you want to run a generator with an antique engine you need a throttle governed engine that hits every time and maintains a consistent speed. Thanks for Watching!

    You probly have the tools to straighten the crank. Do it the same way a push mower is done, with a hammer & a piece of pipe.

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 Před 27 dny

      That's a very crude method of doing it and can very easily end up making things worse. When I eventually am able to do it the crank is coming out of the engine and the wheels are coming off so the bearings and wheels don't get damaged in the process and it's going to be measured and put into a press and straightened. (Unless there's another way I'm not aware of that people do it in a controlled manner) Then it will get magnafluxed to make sure there are no cracks before being reassembled. The problem right now is that I don't have a press and I also have other projects that are taking priority so I haven't had time to do it yet. One day later down the line it will happen though! Thanks for Watching!

    • @Iowa599
      @Iowa599 Před 27 dny

      @@colin_5839 it's only as crude as the person holding the hammer. Don't worry about existing cracks, either. it's overbuilt for what it was, which is 10x what you are using it for. really, I wouldn't worry about that lil wobble, because the bend happened outside the crankcase. but you are...so do it the safe way, start with a 16oz hammer & recheck after every strike. Don't hit it harder, just get a bigger hammer. I bet a 6lb hammer is all it would need. Ya gotta think about the mechanical processes available when that was built. The precision wasn't near what it is now, so everything was built very loose. If a farmer couldn't fix something with a hammer, pliers, and baling wire, it was junk.

    Thanks. I just got a toastmaster with the 3 metal blades. I just oiled it (without taking it apart). It barely has a rattle on high speed anymore but still rattles on the lower speed. Does that narrow down what is causing the rattle?

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 Před 27 dny

      It is mostly likely due to worn out bearings. These fans were both made cheap and usually beat to hell across their many years of service so that plus the motor shaft really being undersized for the size and weight of the blade means you very often find that the bearings are worn on them. Other than that, assuming it's in good balance, it could also need some fiber washers. Always a good idea to replace those anyways, especially on fans of this vintage. Thanks for Watching!

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 Před 26 dny

      I wont be able to make a dedicated video on it for a little while here, but assuming you are talking about adjusting the mixture, the general process I follow is this: Screw the main jet ( the one on the bottom sticking out on an angle on the back of the bowl) until it LIGHTLY seats and then back it off 1.5 to 2 turns. Do the same with the idle mixture screw which is the small one sticking out the front of the top half of the carb (90 degrees from the throttle shaft). Then I will start the engine and let it run at high speed (on a generator I let the governor take it up to 3600 rpm, on some of the older engines I put the governor spring on it and set it somewhere around like 2000 ish) and then SLOWLY turn the main jet in until you hear the engine tone change and it starts to (stumble or surge up and down if it's on the governor) and then once you hit that point very slowly bring it back out until the engine smooths out and runs nice. Once you have that set bring the engine down to an idle and repeat the same process with the idle mixture screw. Once this has been completed it should be just about set, but sometimes these briggs flo jets need a little more tweaking to get them just right. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

    Hi, me again. I recently picked up a 10 inch model (model no 1046 N) and would like to know how many bearings one has, and where they are. I know theres a gearbox in the back that the oscillating knob goes in to. It needs the cord replaced (someone removed both the cord, so I'm just gonna service the bearings/gearboxes, as they're decently tight) Theres not a lot of info about these out there. Are there any other places I need to oil? If so, how do I get to them? How do I take the hub that holds the fan blade on, off? Also, what kind of oil do you use to oil these fans. If it makes a difference, mine is one of the older all metal ones with a two piece metal housing. Also, do I need a different kind of wire for the head wire? Any help is much appreciated!

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 Před měsícem

      I believe they are dual bearing motors just like most fans of the time. I would take the motor apart and oil the wicks around each bearing with zoomspout oil. The gear box I'd take apart and clean out the old grease and replace it with fresh stuff and that will likely get everything moving freely once again! Wire shouldnt really matter too much... Thanks for Watching! Let me know if you need anything else! :)

    • @wallnut886
      @wallnut886 Před měsícem

      @@colin_5839 Thank you much! They do have two bearings. If you want to properly get to the one in the back to replace it, you have to remove the rotor, which wasn't hard in my case, theres a place to oil the bearings when you take the rear cover off The front one is easier to get to. You can get to it just by removing the blade, at least on mine. Not sure how many design changes these went through over the years from the thirties to the fifties. If you want to soften the blades, they're made of rubber, so bear that in mind, though I've heard of people replacing them with leather. As cool as these are, like I said, there's pretty much nothing out there on getting these fans apart or anything at all for that matter. Not sure how successful they were. I found out myself that they're fairly simple, just make sure you don't lose the spacers near the front and back of the rotor and you're fine. It was the first fan I took apart and it turned out fairly well. I gotta take the blade back off because I didn't get it properly in balanced. The hubs that hold the blade on like to not come off after a while, and take some convincing which is to be expected for their age. They have a unique startup sound, which I personally really like. The thing is about as quiet as my modern 10 inch fan and moves twice the air at the same speed. Sad to see so few of them around. Happy to have gotten my hands on it. I'll take your advice on the oil. I'll be taking it apart again anyway, as the oil I used wasn't the best for a fan, but I just wanted to see if it would do fan things before getting too far ahead of myself. Thank you for your advice! You've been a great help

    That table fan is from the 80's. The National Panasonic of the 70's, the motor casing was made of aluminum and the blade too, shortly afterward a model came out with a light blue, non-translucent rigid plastic blade.

    Why did you do a stupid thing like that???????¿???????😢

    • @colin_5839
      @colin_5839 Před měsícem

      Because it gives the engine something to run and also acts as a nice fan for when I'm at the shows! Lots of people really like it too so it can't really be that stupid!

    I love those GE's electric fans and electrical things the company have made in the history. I am a big GE brand fan myself:) Good job fixing that beautiful GE Electric Fan and nice paint color I like Blue as my favorite color too!

      Yeah they made some neat stuff back in the day! Their fans may not have been the highest quality stuff around but they sure did last quite a while and made a lot of neat stuff! Thanks for Watching!

    That turned out great, bro! The dark Hunter has a great look. Nicely color matched(close enough), without the baby puke green we see on some restos. Thank you for the shout out on the paint technique and assistance. You know I always got your back and wouldn't recommend anything I haven't done. The final result is one to be proud of! Even though we are spoiled with pre-1910 fans(your tank for instance), the AOU is hard to beat. That and Emmy 29646s. So glad you are helping keep these old beauties for around another 100+ years!!! Apologies for not getting to this sooner. You know the situation, but I made sure to take the time to properly praise the work you did. I like that you stick with it until done. Too many people get overwhelmed and never finish theirs. Keep it up, bro! 🤜🤛 🍻

      Thanks Alex! That means a lot hearing that from you! Yeah my pleasure man! I will always give shout outs to those who help me! :) They really are solid fans! This one just needs some fiber washers in the gear box at some point because it does make a little noise but other than that it's an incredible runner and runs great! And no worries about the response time! I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video at all LOL! That's the plan! :) Thanks for Watching!

    I have the 16 inch variation. It is also very cosmetically rough and the blade is a little bit bent up. Also, it has a busted grill. But I got a replacement grill for it. I plan to fix the blade and guard and do the wiring but leave the cosmetics alone. I kind of like the faded glory appearance..

    Very nice restoration! A few years ago I bought GE Fan off ebay with the brass fan cage and blades that dates between 1910 to 1914. Unfortunately the wires were cut going to the head. I am pretty good with electrical but I had a difficult time finding exact wiring diagrams for a fan of this era. My fan has what looks like a transformer in the base of the fan. I really would like to see if the fan runs before I start restoring it. Currently its been sitting in a box in the closet for a few years. Can anyone tell me a good website with detailed information on the exact wiring for a fan of this generation? I've watched every CZcams video i could find on these early fans but couldn't find anything that showed me how to wire it from scratch. Once I see that it runs it will be a huge motivation to continue with the restoration. Any advice or links to wiring schematics is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

      Thanks!! Ohh neat! As for the wiring I'm not entirely sure if there are any dedicated wiring diagrams out there, however you can figure out which wire is which with a multimeter. The "transformer" in the base is actually the speed coil. Most are just glorified resistors, but some do in fact work slightly differently ( I know Westinghouse had some more complicated ones for example) Start by looking at the tag and seeing what model the fan is and I bet we can figure something out from there!
