    That's a fine property you have there. I've just got myself a VTEC mini chainsaw about the same size for my little place. Mine came with a dripper bottle and I've bought some bar oil. Easy enough to dribble oil along the chain before each use. Sooner or later you'll have to sharpen the chain which is what I'm exploring now. Looking at some files and I reckon 1/8 and 5/32 round files should do the job.

      Thank you! I suppose that there are several brands claiming this chainsaw. Yeah, I've been wondering about how these little chains will hold-up once it's time to sharpen them. I will likely do a long-term review after a year or so.

    OK. WOW! JUST WATCHED YOUR VIDEO AND AM SO GRATEFUL YOU DID THIS AND THAT I FOUND IT. TOO LONG A STORY SHORT: MY GRANDPA BUILT OUR HOME IN 1900, AND IT'S CINDER BLOCK AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN TORN DOWN PROBABLY AFTER HIS DEATH IN 1957; WE (MY SISTER AND MYSELF) STILL HAVE 13 YEARS LEFT ON A 30 YEAR MORTGAGE, AND I'M WORKING TO GET US OUT OF A VERY UNSAFE HOME. SADLY, I BROUGHT SIS HOME FROM HER CANCER SURGERY ON SEPT. 29TH TO A HOUSE W/O ELECTRIC AS WIRING IS SHOT AND ELEC. CO. SAID "DO NOT TURN BREAKER BACK ON!" (WE LIVE IN TOWN SO HAVE WATER). DEAR FRIENDS BOUGHT US A KERO 23,500 HEATER; AND DELIVERED IT NOV 19TH. THE WICK FINALLY SEEMS TO HAVE SETTLED DOWN (BTW: I WAS MISLED TO THINK KNOB CONTROLLED HEAT OUTPUT!), AND I GOT IT TOGETHER FINE. BUT NOW, IT PUKES BLACK SMOKE, THE KNOB STICKS (AS YOU POINTED OUT); AND I HAVE NO IDEA IF I AM USING K1 OR JUST REGULAR KERO! (GAS STATIONS DO NOT TELL YOU, AND I DON'T HAVE MONEY FOR FANCY-SCHMANCY!) I'M 76 AND STILL VERY ACTIVE; BUT MY CIRCULATION HAS ALWAYS SUCKED. I DON'T WANT TO TURN IT OFF AFTER ONLY 6 WEEKS OF USE TO HAVE TO FULLY CLEAN IT OR GET A NEW WICK??? (I'M IN N.E. INDIANA) IT BURNS GOOD NOW, BUT THE SMELL SUCKS, AND I DON'T NEED THAT OR THE BLACK THAT COMES ON START UP. CAN ANYONE HELP? WILL THE ADDITIVE THAT ONE POSTED HELP TO ASSURE THE KERO IS A CLEANER BURN? I'VE USED THESE BEFORE, AND THESE NEW ONES ARE AMAZING -BUT, FRUSTRATING FOR ALL THE SAFETY FEATURES, AND I'M UNSURE HOW TO WORK ON THIS ONE! SORRY FOR THE LENGTH; BUT ANNNY HELP AND SUGGESTIONS SO APPRECIATED! BLESSINGS! LYNN

    • @HeritageAndHarvest
      @HeritageAndHarvest Před 7 měsíci

      I'm sorry about your situation. It sounds like you have a lot on you. I will help as much as I can. (1) The knob doesn't really control output/heat temperature as much as it does the length of the wick. You adjust the knob to get the best length that will give you the least amount of smoke and the most efficient burn, which should be no smoke at all. (2) Using K1 is very important. All of the gas stations that I'm aware of use K1, but that might not be the case abroad. If there is any dye in it at all then it's for sure not K1. And I understand not wanting to buy the fancy K1 off the shelf at the store. The price is crazy! (3) The only way that I've found to almost completely get rid of the black smoke and smell that comes at the beginning and end of a burn, is to start the heater outside and then take it back outside to turn it off. The only problem with that is that it's a safety issue. Carrying a kero heater while it's burning isn't the greatest idea. Another idea could be to start it with the windows open and a fan blowing over it (over it and not on it, and a gentle breeze) it and turn it off the same way. There's not a perfect solution. (4) The additive truly does help it to burn cleaner and can preserve your wick for longer. (5) You should not have to clean your wick that often. It can be a wise thing to give it a little scrubbing every few months, but most folks only clean once a year and they do fine. It really does depend on how much you're using it, the type of kero your using if you using an additive for a cleaner burn, and if your wick is at the correct setting.

      @HeritageAndHarvest Před 9 měsíci

      There's no specific reason that I'm aware of, other than them not being necessary. I simply followed the plan in the book. I'm sure you could add some and maybe they would help with cross ventilation. Even if it doesn't help to add them, I don't see why it would hurt.

    When I burned off my wick the unit burned for like 3 to 5 hours. Outside in the uncovered porch area which was rather windy, and the burning of the wick sent carbon hot fluff which some parts landed on the top of the chimney. This was carbon black type of material of unburned slightly oily carbon. The heater was refilled with K-! kerosene mixed with 1 ounce of 100-99 percent USP grade isopropyl alcohol. This high grade alcohol is totally anhydrous and the best you can buy. This trick was taught to me by an old timer who swears by this additive mix with the kerosene. THis will keep the burn ultra clean.and literally odor free. This additive really works PERIOD !! My heater does not have any soot inside the chimney of the unit. This is just remarkable stuff. The simple green you use works super. I use it outside my house to keep bugs and all kind of thing to stay away from my home. Also when it rains the aluminum siding stays super clean without pressure washing the exterior. This cleaner is just remarkable, PERIOD !!! What I am wondering is if you would make a stainless steel mesh chimney in the shape of a cylindrical shape on top of the inner side to side catalytic converter mesh flame guide ?? This I think would increase the heat output and reduce the amount of kero used with this heater. What do you thind Sir ?? Nice video and good down to earth maintenance information Sir. Peace vf.

    • @HeritageAndHarvest
      @HeritageAndHarvest Před 9 měsíci

      Very interesting tip on the additive! Thank you for sharing that. I think you're on to something regarding the mesh chimney. It seems to me that I've seen one that somewhat resembles this design. It was maybe around 20 years ago. I don't know how it would work, but I have thought to myself several times that there has to be a better and more efficient way of keeping, directing and distributing the heat.

    • @victoryfirst2878
      @victoryfirst2878 Před 8 měsíci

      First of all, you are not suppose to use any additive. I chose to use the additive to keep the smell down. I use crystal clear K-1 Kerosene !! NO RED DYE, PERIOD !! A new wick beginning of the season. Made in Japan or England. THE HELL WITH THE CHINAMAN JUNK !!!! This is part one !!! Have a Happy New Year and hopefully more to come for me and you too. Kerosene at my local Tractor Supply is $50 for a 5 gallon container. Yea, No, I’ve been using diesel to keep a hoop house warm. $10 a gallon compared to $4.15 for diesel. Wicks aren’t that expensive.

    • @HeritageAndHarvest
      @HeritageAndHarvest Před 10 měsíci

      I get it. Kerosene at the pump is much more affordable than in the jugs at the stores, but overall kerosene has gone up in price to the point that it might not be worth it for some or even most people. Like most things, it just depends.

      No. It shouldn't. It's most likely that the wick was set either too high or too low. The adjustment nob on these units isn't really to turn the heat up or down, but to adjust the reveal of the wick to it's perfect setting. If the flame is fluttering or if there is black smoke, then the knob needs to be turned and the wick adjusted.

    • @Inflec
      @Inflec Před rokem

      It worked because dry burning the wick forces the carbon that has built up on the top to be burned away leaving the wick mostly clean. You can improve this technique by taking a plastic bristle brush (like a toothbrush) to the exposed part of the wick and brush away any remaining carbon. When finished the cleaned wick should feel like soft felt to the touch. That's when you know the wick is in prime condition.

    I just bought this with 6 chicks and I'm starting to think it may be kind of small for 6 full size chickens. I am considering modifying the hen house before I build and make it larger by 2 feet then just attach the run to it from there. I would have to make the roof longer also but not a big deal. Still cheaper than building one from scratch. How has this held up for you so far with 6 chickens and do you think they would benefit from more room? It also looks like the roof of the nesting box does not seal well against the coop. Has that been a leaking issue for you?

      I agree that six will be a bit tight. I would say this coop holds six chickens at most. I only say that assuming that you're going to let them out to free-range or you'll have a larger pen surrounding the coop. That's what we did and it works well. There are no issues with weather getting into the nesting/roosting area. I did end up installing plastic around the run area (all but one side to allow for ventilation). If I had to do it over again I would have made several modifications to the coop from the beginning. The biggest issue is that all of the chickens want to roost in the rafters of the coop, but the area is too small. They somehow manage to squeeze up there anyway. With six chickens (we only have four per local ordinance) I would block off the rafter area so that the chickens can't roost there and then I would build a new roost for them in the run. That's just my opinion. I'm hoping to do an update video for this coop soon. Here is a video that will show what we did for a pen around the coop. It's not a video about the pen, but you can see it in the background. czcams.com/video/1zCCgU3t-50/video.html

    Do you have a video of the run you added to this?? Just purchased the same one and trying to figure out how to best extend the run

      Hi, Derek. I decided to not add a run to the coop at this time for a few reasons. Instead I made a large pen to go around the coop. I don’t have an official video showing the pen, but there are a couple videos where you can see what we did. I’ll share those here czcams.com/video/4w8uUgSIbpQ/video.html and here czcams.com/users/shorts6hPwuwLJe3s?feature=share
