The purpose of calling the Lama from afar is to recognize that everything is an expression, manifestation, and play of the Lama's mind, or the nature of our own mind (buddha nature, which is the clear aspect). This is the true significance of calling the Lama from afar.
The mind of the Lama, in its ultimate essence or clear aspect, is fundamentally the same as ours. However, because we have been lost in samsara and caught in the cycle of endless rebirths since time immemorial, we seek the guidance of the Lama. This is why we call upon the Lama from afar.
