    Just curious, what are you using for a charger and batteries? Can your batteries take a higher power charger/would it have benefitted you to have a higher power charger on this trip? I don't know if there was ever a time where stopping somewhere in the middle of the day you might have had access to an outlet and 30 minutes of 1C or even 0.5C charging would have given you some piece of mind in terms of keeping your batteries charged in case you ended up in a situation like the night you camped off the side of the closed road. Off the shelf chargers are normally STUPID expensive but I've found several Aliexpress options based off of server power supplies/telecom rectifiers that should be absolute tanks considering their original design was for some pretty hard work. The best one I"ve come across so far is the ZXD2400 V4.3 with the most recent display option. You can probably get the more rudimentary style display options for a bit cheaper but I think at $180 shipped this is a much better deal than dealing with the not so intuitive seven segment display of the older versions www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806584929820.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.21.6442c722c722M4&algo_pvid=8164df24-d874-4ab7-bdbc-00122593eeb2&algo_exp_id=8164df24-d874-4ab7-bdbc-00122593eeb2-10&pdp_npi=4%40dis%21USD%21140.27%21138.87%21%21%211012.08%211001.96%21%402101ec1a17168494855381855ee0f8%2112000038244016147%21sea%21US%213589144974%21&curPageLogUid=zkJqkDXeMzOq&utparam-url=scene%3Asearch%7Cquery_from%3A This is the best price I've found so far I think....Wouldn't pay more than $200 shipped for this style..for the older style display I'd pay MAYBE $160 shipped. With 220V-240V AC Input you can get 0-60V 0-50A (I don't think you'd need the 0-120V 0-25A version since it sounds like your batteries are 12S or 13S I'm guessing...so the 0-60V works for up to 14S....I guess if you have a 16S or 20S then you're forced to get the 0-120V model) With 120V AC input you can get 0-60V 0-25A but of course its recommended to never run these rectifiers at 100%...always derate to ~80%....so 18A or 20A should be plenty for you. If you need the full power of 220-240V most people will use an oven outlet in their home or something similar. For E-Bike batteries I would guess that 120V AC input is enough to max out the charging rate of your batteries but I could see if you were charging some bigger LiFePO4 batteries at home it would be nice to have the full 40A+ (derating it 80%...you can use the full 50A so long as you're not above 50V...I'm still a little unclear about the power...I think its a 3000W peak rectifier for short periods of time but its continuous rating is 2400W?)

    So many interesting details. Most of my family ended up in Phoenix so I spend a lot of time visiting there. The highway portions of your ride look absolutely dreadful. It's hard to imagine how anybody would want to do that. It would be interesting to know how much the solar actually helps - compared to plugging into a "non-networked wall outlet" like you did at McDonalds. I wonder if people ever give you grief for plugging in like that. What do you figure, maybe you pulled 45 cents worth of electricity? And the A-frame over the tent site. What's with that? Is that a common thing in the desert?

    • @Eric_Tennant
      @Eric_Tennant Před 10 hodinami

      Took about 250w of power from MCD. So about $0.05. The rare times i find a plug-in no one ever has stopped me. The solar panel pulls about 1100w a day. A frame is unique to that 55 an older trailer park. Was breaking their rules to be there as I'm 44.

    • @MrTwostring
      @MrTwostring Před 9 hodinami

      @@Eric_Tennant - I have an older electric car that I bought used - so I'm used to saying "75 cents." I guess I should have guessed lower as to how much juice you got with your $8 breakfast. I have a couple tandems - one with a child stoker kit that my daughter used with me when she was 5 or 6. She's grown now and I'm itching to take an ebike trip. I'm trying to talk her to coming with me on the tandem, fixed up and with a hub motor up front. I've watched a few "solar trailer" videos and I'm often struck with the thought that the answer for my case is probably just more battery, since it's easy enough to find a non-networked wall outlet around here, and solar can be spotty. (Erie canal would probably be my first thought.)

    I’m a longtime truck driver 30+ years and 3,000,000 miles under my belt and I also do cycle touring when I take time off. I have an electric bike and I’ve been trying to figure out how I can keep it charged up with two 100 W panels and a unit from Jackery

    • @Eric_Tennant
      @Eric_Tennant Před 9 hodinami

      Jackery is not the best way to do it; because from solar to Jackery is a DC/AC conversion with a 9% loss. Then Jackery to bike charger is a AC/DC conversion with 9% loss. I have a few video that show a better way of doing it. czcams.com/video/Q8mwX7DDNgs/video.html

    I've been a bicycle commuter my whole life, and I lived in phoenix for 5 years, it was the only time I hated commuting. I didn't have a good bike back then though. But the heat is so oppressive, and the concert melts rubber. I rode 12k miles on a normal bike in a year in North Carolina and that hear almost never bothered me. That desert heat is like cycling in an air fryer. Its brutal. I wish I could get a solar set up llike yours that didn't take up so much space. I like to carry a lot of gear on my tours! I lived in Peoria for a bit, mostly in Deer Valley. Worked at the waffle house up there by the highway!

Still not a fan of gas but its cool to see someone touring on one! When I rode the trans am in 2012 I rode 122 miles the first day, fully loaded on a trek 520! 150 miles is a great range! @@Adventures4vida I am contemplating purchasing a Burley CoHo XC trailer and ditching my panniers. Thus, I can mount a solar panel and install the appropriate electronics like you did for solar charging. I might also include foldable solar panels for more charging in less time. One thing we have in our area besides a lot of rocks and cacti, is clear skies and abundant sunlight. I rode my ToutTerrain Panamerica 26" bike all over the US. So, my 60 volt e-bike and its battery got stolen a couple weeks back, and the other day the police returned it and the battery. Now, rather than charging up to a maximum of 70.3 volts, the BMS is saying that the battery is only a 48 volt battery. Did the thieves give the police the wrong battery, or is the BMS acting up? Not only did the battery come back out of its wrapper, but when I completely unwrapped the battery I noticed that four cells were removed from one end of it. The thieves may have removed the four missing cells, or the battery may have simply came that way from the factory. Not sure
