    I have a 2013 model, bought 6yrs ago. Over ther years ive upgraded bits as theyve worn out ot broke . . . Changed the bars to 40cm. stem to 90mm, carbon seatpost and saddle, DT Swiss rims, Vittoria Rubino G2 tires, latex tubes, and 11speed 105 groupset with SPD-SL pedals. It regularly beats many much newer and higher spec bikes it's still super comfortable, and rolls beautifully.

    If you think riding dirt roads is some kind of special occasion that only occurs once or twice a year then you're not really qualified to be speaking on this subject. I have lived all up and down the East Coast, generally in places with good proximity to public land like Northern New England, Upstate NY, and the Southern Appalachians. Poorly maintained dirt roads are the RULE in these areas. A road bike will get you inured very easily. Vermont is the best example of this, so it's funny you mentioned it. You're not going anywhere in Vermont on slick road tires unless you're right in Burlington.

    I've been riding on Sora for about 5-6 years. I've tried a few different chains (Sram, Shimano, KMC) and cassettes as well. Now I'm using KMC X9 chains which is the best option regarding the price, how it works and the way it is linked. Moreover, I've mounted Shimano Deore XT 9s cassette and now the whole drive works perfectly fine.

    45mm treaded tires, rigid fork. That's the ideal all-purpose set up for a bike that's going to see a roughly equal measure of pavement and rough dirt roads with the occasional trail shortcut thrown in. Is that a "gravel bike"? I don't really care what you call it.

    • @swanauto47
      @swanauto47 Před měsícem

      For me it came down to the amount of stuff that can go wrong. I’ve had rim and disc brake bikes and without fail I’ve worked on at least one disc brake bike per day with some kind of warped rotor or contaminated rotor that squeals or tings and brakes horribly. I got contamination on one of my Ultegra rotors I had before and my Force rotors I had were pretty good but it recommends that the DOT fluid be bled once a year. That’s just extra stuff I have to do. Also if the hose is threaded into the lever wrong the entire lever is done in most cases and it could be a super pricey electronic one. I’ve had tons of good rides on both rim and disc brake bikes so they aren’t all good or all bad but less spokes in the front wheel for less drag, as well as not having service intervals on my brakes is what did it for me. Also they just look super clean a lot of the time and handle better since the front fork can have more freedom of shape and design.

      I haven’t actually figured it out. My best bet would be to take it to a hardware store if you want to try to service this part yourself and have them make a replica. I think the bike industry is kind of missing the mark on what bikes to make, and is facing the repercussions of over-ordering on their Covid boom. If we want more people to ride for everyday occasions, we don’t need carbon bikes, we need tools of utility, bikes that can either carry a load (cargo bikes) or help make cycling more accessible (e-bikes) and most importantly, the combo of the two. Some American companies are finally catching up to this, but this sector has been dominated by European and Asian brands.

I don't want any of the new road bikes I see in shops. I don't want disc brakes, electronic, hydraulic, or internal cable systems that will take hours to replace a simple cable. I just want a simple machine that is trustworthy, has good geometry, that is fast, easy and economical to service. I will probably have to stick to used frames and retro components from now on because I can't buy that new at a bicycle shop any longer.

    IMO modern bikes look good, I like the aesthetics of integrated cables and aero frames, also deep wheels look cool. However, I despise disc brakes due to their heavier weight and difficulty of maintainance, rim brakes are literally the easiest part of the bike to maintain. Disc brakes, electronic shifting and all that also drive up the cost of parts and new bikes, which are nowadays insanely overpriced.

Hydro disc brakes i can at least see the point of, especially here in the UK. Full integration is just a fashion fad, supposedly touting a 1 watt saving.
